Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea is defined as CSF otorrhea where there are no identifiable causes including previous trauma, surgery, infection, neoplasm or congenital anomaly. The condition is rare. The origin of CSF leak is commonly a defect in the tegmen of the middle cranial fossa. The pathophysiology of spontaneous CSF otorrhea is unclear. Two theories of the etiology of bony defects of the temporal bone are the congenital bony defect theory and arachnoid granulation theory. The authors experienced a case of a 49-year-old female patient admitted with the complaint of persis

A 52-year-old woman presented with right rhinorrhea and right otorrhea manifesting as aural fullness for 2 years caused by a choroid plexus papilloma in the right cerebellomedullary cistern. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well defined lobulated mass at the foramen of Luschka, which extended towards the right cerebellomedullary cistern with slight dilation of the ventricular systems. The tumor was totally resected via a right lateral suboccipital approach. Histological examination revealed a choroid plexus papilloma. Postoperative course was uneventful, just after

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea is a rare condition that presents in 2 clinical categories. In congenital labyrinthine malformations, it leads to bouts of meningitis in a hearing-impaired child. In the adult age group, a spontaneous CSF leak almost always results from a dural and bony defect in the tegmen area. Possible pathogenic mechanisms include progressive sagging and rupture of dura through a congenital tegmen dehiscence and progressive bone erosion by aberrant arachnoid granulations. These patients usually present with a middle ear effusion, resulting in clear discharge a

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a condition that commonly presents with unilateral watery drainage from the nose or ear, tinnitus, and stuffy ears or hearing loss. Spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea together are rare. A 64-year-old woman presented at our department with complaints of clear watery rhinorrhea and hearing loss on the right side persisting for 10 months. Imaging and surgery were used to diagnose the condition. Through surgical treatment, she was eventually cured. Review of the literature has shown that patients with both nasal and aural CSF leaks are rare. When

INTRODUCTION: As scientific knowledge has grown in biomedicine, it has also become necessary to develop tools to manage and understand the body of evidence. In that sense, bibliometrics has become a consolidated discipline for analyzing scientific activity, enabling the characterization of a particular field or area of knowledge by means of the quantification of the bibliographic characteristics of scientific publications.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the most frequently cited articles in the field of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and otorrhea.
METHODS: The search

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Spontaneous leak of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the middle ear can occur in adults without a history of temporal bone trauma or fracture, meningitis, or any obvious cause. Therefore, clues may be lacking that would alert the otolaryngologist that fluid medial to an intact eardrum, or fluid emanating from an eardrum perforation, is likely to be CSF fluid. A review of relevant medical literature reveals that herniation of the arachnoid membrane through a tegmen defect may be congenital, or CSF leak may occur when dynamic factors (i.e., brain pulsations or increases in i

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea is usually associated with a history of trauma or previous surgery. Spontaneous CSF otorrhea is uncommon. When such spontaneous CSF leakage occurs, it may be associated with dural herniation, with the production of conductive hearing loss from impingement on the ossicles. This type of leakage has characteristic findings which, if recognized, can lead to earlier diagnosis and avoidance of complications. A review of the world literature revealed 44 reported cases. This report presents the authors' experience with 12 patients with spontaneous CSF leakage from te

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and pneumocephalus commonly occur due to head trauma or surgical procedures. Spontaneous CSF (sCSF) leaks, however, occur without any clear etiology and are relatively uncommon.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 84-year-old woman presented with the right-sided otorrhea. The patient had a history of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement following a subarachnoid hemorrhage treated by clip ligation of a left-sided ruptured cerebral aneurysm 7 years before presentation, with shunt catheter ligation after evidence of intraventricular pneumocephalus 6 years before pr

Mondini dysplasia is a congenital malformation of the inner ear, which is characterized by a short and large cochlear canal of 1.5 turn rather than 2.5 turns and an apical region with cystic dilatation. Patients present with congenital deafness, when both cochlea are affected. Unilateral disease may cause recurrent meningitis, otorrhea or rhinorrhea. In this article, we report a three-year-old pediatric case with a history of meningitis and cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea following tympanostomy tube placement for serous otitis media.

UNLABELLED: Inner ear dysplasia is a rare cause of cerebrospinal fluid otorhinorrhea and presents in a variety of ways, ranging from asymptomatic to recurrent bacterial meningitis. We describe a 6-year-old boy who presented with clear watery nasal discharge and recurrent bacterial meningitis. Magnetic resonance cisternogram showed cerebrospinal fluid leak through the cribriform plate of ethmoid. High-resolution computed tomographic scan of temporal bones confirmed the diagnosis of cochlear dysplasia, with cerebrospinal fluid leak coming through a defect near the oval window and through the eus

Unrecognized spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea led to recurrent bacterial meningitis in three children. The underlying cause of the spontaneous CSF otorrhea was proved to be a congenital cystic dilatation of the cochlear aqueduct and Mondini dysplasia of the temporal bone. The CSF leak recurred in all patients after an initial surgical attempts to close the defects through a tympanotomy. A suboccipital approach was used successfully to obliterate the CSF fistulas in two children; a translabyrinthine approach was used in the other. A search of the literature revealed that Mondini d
