Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea causes the loss of CSF, resulting in a decrease in intracranial pressure and a lack of CSF protection in brain tissue. CSF rhinorrhea may cause impairment of posterior cranial nerves resulting in facial paralysis and vertigo. However, dysarthria caused by involvement of glossopharyngeal nerves and vagus nerves has seldom been reported. Here, we reported a 69-year-old woman who had paroxysmal slurred speech due to CSF rhinorrhea together with paroxysmal facial paralysis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea refers to the loss of CSF through the nasal cavity. Its causes can be classified as either spontaneous or non-spontaneous. Spontaneous causes of CSF rhinorrhea include congenital anatomical defects and are extremely rare, accounting for less than 4% of reported cases. Following failure of conservative management, definitive treatment most commonly involves an endoscopic transsphenoidal repair of the defect. We present a case of spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea in a previously well 52-year-old female, which required surgical intervention due to failure of conserva

BACKGROUND: The association between spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak/rhinorrhea and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) has been increasingly recognized over the last years. However, considerable variability of opinion regarding the assessment, investigations, and management of patients with spontaneous CSF rhinorrhea remains.
METHODS: A consensus group was formed from experts from Europe, Asia, Australia, South and North America. Following literature review and open discussions with members of the panel, a set of 61 statements was produced. A modified Delphi method was used

Accurate diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea (CSFR) is a challenge for physicians caring for patients with traumatic brain injury. Failure to recognize this condition may result in significant medical complications and prolong hospitalization. Two male patients who developed CSFR within 2 months of severe head injury are described. A clear nasal discharge was noted on examination approximately 30 and 35 days after head injury in both patients and a CSF fistula was suspected. High-resolution computerized tomography (CT) with coronal sections confirmed the diagnosis. Both patients underw

The recognition of cerebrospinal leakage from a fistula is an important consideration for any physician caring for a head-injured population. Several procedures including radiographic, intrathecal dye, nuclear medicine tracer studies, computerized tomography with metrizamide injection, and immunological fixation have been reported to help in the diagnosis. Introduction of glucose oxidase test sticks has been traditionally touted to be a reliable bedside indicator of CSF rhinorrhea; this case study demonstrates a falsely negative result from glucose oxidase sticks.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new technique for control of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea and to review alternative approaches.
STUDY DESIGN: Five cases and literature review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Five case study patients.
INTERVENTION: Surgical.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Control of CSF rhinorrhea.
RESULTS: CSF rhinorrhea can be controlled through eustachian tube ligation in the nasopharynx, distal to all known pathways through which CSF leaks may occur from the temporal bone into the eustachian tube.
CONCLUSION: Transoral eustachian tube ligation appears to be a sa

Management of patients with sphenoidal cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea remains controversial. With consideration of the etiology of cerebrospinal fluid leaks, size of the sinus, location of the fistula, and previous surgery, one may choose either an extracranial or transcranial approach. In two patients in whom conventional procedures failed or seemed to be inapplicable, the cerebrospinal fluid leak was successfully treated through an original transfacial approach with palpebral incisions. A transzygomatic osteoplastic flap provided access to close the fistula and to exclude the sinus with a bo

A 41-year-old female underwent complete resection of a left petroclival meningioma via an anterior transpetrosal approach, during which the greater superficial petrosal nerve was divided. On the 14th day after the operation, she first noticed leakage of clear fluid from her right nostril whenever the ambient room temperature rose. This pseudo-cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea may have developed because of parasympathetic hypersensitivity due to division of the greater superficial petrosal nerve.

Introduction Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea is the result of a bony defect at the skull base with disruption of the arachnoid, dura mater, and sinonasal mucosa that leads to an active CSF leak and flow of clear fluid from the nose. The endoscopic repair of CSF leaks and skull defects have been used by an increasing number of surgeons and is the standard of care for repairing CSF leaks. Materials and methods We conducted a retrospective study of all cases of CSF leaks managed via the endonasal endoscopic approach from 2010 to 2020 at a tertiary referral hospital of King Fahad Specialist H
