The white matter tracts of the cerebrum in ventricular surgery and hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE The relationship of the white matter tracts to the lateral ventricles is important when planning surgical approaches to the ventricles and in understanding the symptoms of hydrocephalus. The authors' aim was to explore the relationship of the white matter tracts of the cerebrum to the lateral ventricles using fiber dissection technique and MR tractography and to discuss these findings in relation to approaches to ventricular lesions. METHODS Forty adult human formalin-fixed cadaveric hemispheres (20 brains) and 3 whole heads were examined using fiber dissection technique. The dissect

Astroblastoma of cerebrum: A rare case report and review of literature.

Astroblastoma is a rare neuroepithelial primary brain tumor of uncertain origin. They form 0.45-2.8% of all the neuroglial tumors. This tumor is usually localized in the cerebral hemisphere of young adults and children. The authors report a case of low-grade astroblastoma in a 16-year-old male and review the relevant literature. The patient presented with 2 months history of progressive headache with projectile vomiting for last 2 months. He underwent gross total resection of the lesion through right temporo-occipital craniotomy. Since tumor showed no evidence of high-grade lesion, adjuvant ra

[Pulmonary nocardiasis with abscesses spreading to cerebrum, cerebellum and orbits].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 71-year-old woman presented with suspected tuberculosis. She reported having productive coughs, unwanted weight loss and subfebrile temperature in the preceding 3 months. She was known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treated with corticoids given systemically and by inhalation. She was a heavy smoker. INVESTIGATIONS: Computed tomography revealed a left apical lung abscess. In the further course of the disease magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated multiple abscesses in both cerebral hemispheres and an abscess, 3.4 cm in diameter, in

Induction of undifferentiated tumors by JC virus in the cerebrum of rats.

Newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were inoculated intracranially with JC virus (Tokyo-1), a human polyomavirus, which had been isolated by Nagashima et al. from the autopsied brain of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in Japan. Twenty-one to 70 weeks later, 21 of 27 rats developed brain tumors in the cerebrum, but not in the cerebellum. Most of the tumor cells were of an undifferentiated neuroectodermal nature and showed nuclear palisades and pseudorosettes. In some tumor cells glial fibrillary acidic protein was positive immunohistochemically, and many glial filaments were d

Adrenoreceptor development in rat cerebrum and the effects of ionizing radiation.

Previous studies in the rat have shown that neonatal radiation alters certain aspects of CNS monoaminergic systems including altering cerebral norepinephrine levels [17]. To determine if cerebral adrenoreceptor development is also altered by neonatal ionizing radiation, a single dose of whole body gamma-radiation was administered to rats on postnatal day two. This treatment did not alter (3H)-dihydroalprenolol (beta adrenoreceptor) or (3H)-WB4101 (alpha1 adrenoreceptor) binding when cerebra from irradiated animals were compared to age-matched sham-irradiated controls on postnatal days 9, 15 an

Differential acetylcholinesterase activity in rat cerebrum, cerebellum and hypothalamus.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) has been purified from three different regions of rat brain using Sephadex G 200 column. SDS PAGE (6%) showed single band for the purified AChE fractions. Purified and lyophilized AChE from different (NH4)2SO4 precipitated fractions of three brain parts were utilized for in vitro enzyme kinetics using Dimethoate (Dmt) as inhibitor. K(m) values for cerebellum and hypothalamus were almost similar whereas cerebrum showed a different K(m) value compared to other two regions. With the drug Rivastigmine it was found that % G1 and G4 forms of AChE in three different parts

Cerebrum functional network alterations following posterior fossa surgery in Children.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric posterior fossa lesions are frequent, and surgery in this area often results in cerebellar injury. Despite improved surgical methods, the impact on brain functional networks and their role in motor and cognitive performance remain unclear. Existing research mainly involves adults or children who received additional therapies, obscuring the effects of isolated cerebellar damage. Evidence from pediatric functional neuroimaging after posterior fossa surgery is limited. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we examined 12 postoperative children and 13 healthy peers using re

Cerebrum-cervical arterial dissection in adults during sports and recreation.

UNLABELLED: Dissection of cervical arteries constitutes a medical emergency. Although relatively rarely, activities classified as sports and recreation may be a cause of arterial dissection independently of neck or head trauma. The purpose of the present paper was to present a series of cases of cerebrum-cervical arterial dissection in individuals during or soon after the practice of these sports activities. METHODS: Retrospective data on patients with arterial dissection related to sports and recreation. RESULTS: Forty-one cases were identified. The most frequently affected vessel was the v

Glial responses to hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy in neonatal rat cerebrum.

This study was undertaken to examine glial responses in the immature rat brain to hypoxic/ischemic injury. The results indicate that developing microglia are the first and principle glial element that responds to hypoxic/ischemic injury during the neonatal period. The astrocyte response occurs later and macrophage infiltration may be delayed or absent.

A Connectomic Atlas of the Human Cerebrum-Chapter 9: The Occipital Lobe.

In this supplement, we build on work previously published under the Human Connectome Project. Specifically, we seek to show a comprehensive anatomic atlas of the human cerebrum demonstrating all 180 distinct regions comprising the cerebral cortex. The location, functional connectivity, and structural connectivity of these regions are outlined, and where possible a discussion is included of the functional significance of these areas. In part 9, we specifically address regions relevant to the occipital lobe and the visual system.

Clinicopathological and molecular analysis of multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumors of the cerebrum.

Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor (MVNT) of the cerebrum is a recently recognized rare neuronal tumor, and its pathogenesis is unclear. We analyzed 7 cases of histologically typical MVNT: 6 were adults (mean age, 43.0 years [range, 23-56 years]) and 1 was a child (age, 10 years). The most common symptoms were seizures (n = 4) and headache (n = 2). The tumors were supratentorial (temporal, 5; frontal lobes, 2) in origin as reported. Vacuolated tumor cells were robustly positive for α-INA and Olig2 and at least partly positive for synaptophysin and MAP2, but negative for Neu-N, nestin

A rare case of malignant pediatric ectomesenchymoma arising from the cerebrum.

Malignant ectomesenchymoma is a rare tumor that contains both ectodermal and mesenchymal elements. So far, only 7 patients with a manifestation in the cerebrum (with confirmed clinicopathological data) have been reported. A 4-year-old girl was present at our hospital with a 3-week history of intermittent sudden dizzy with no apparent cause. MRI showed an irregular enhanced lesion in the left frontal-parietal lobe and lateral ventricle with peripheral gadolinium-enhancement with a significant surrounding edema. Total removal of the tumor was performed. Histological examination of the resected t

Ependymal cyst in the cerebrum of an African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops).

A focal lesion was detected by magnetic resonance imaging in the right caudal occipital lobe of the cerebrum in an African green monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops). Neurological signs were not observed in this animal. At necropsy examination, an 8mm wedge-shaped intracranial cavity was found, which apparently did not communicate with the ventricles. Microscopically, the inner surface of the cavity was lined by ciliated cuboidal epithelium with positive immunoreactivity for S100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein and cytokeratin. Based on the gross, microscopical and immunohistochemical findin

The segmented regional volumes of the cerebrum and cerebellum in boys with Tourette syndrome.

Neuropathological deficits are an etiological factor in Tourette syndrome (TS), and implicate a network linking the basal ganglia and the cerebrum, not a particular single brain region. In this study, the volumes of 20 cerebral and cerebellar regions and their symmetries were measured in normal boys and TS boys by brain magnetic resonance imaging. Brain magnetic resonance images were obtained prospectively in 19 boys with TS and 17 age-matched normal control boys. Cerebral and cerebellar regions were segmented to gray and white fractions using algorithm for semi-automated fuzzy tissue segmenta
