Stingers, cervical cord neurapraxia, and stenosis.

The risk of sustaining a stinger, CCN, or a more serious catastrophic injury to the cervical spine increases with increasing stenosis. The RR of a player sustaining a second stinger or CCN increases exponentially when compared with the risk of a player sustaining an initial stinger or CCN. Intravenous steroids have no role in the management of stingers or CCN. Players who remain symptomatic after a stinger, players with persistently abnormal diagnostic studies after a stinger, and any player who experiences a CCN should be excluded from further participation in contact sports.

Iatrogenic cervical spinal cord injury after interlaminar cervical epidural injection.

ObjectivesDescribe a catastrophic complication of cervical epidural injection (CEI) in a patient with prior anterior cervical discectomy with fusion (ACDF).SettingInterlaminar CEI at C7-T1 was performed under minimal sedation.DiscussionRight hemiparesis, diffuse dysesthesia, and tactile allodynia were immediately described after the procedure. 24 hours after CEI, an MRI showed an increased T2 signal and decreased T1 signal in the spinal cord extending from C3-T3. Postsurgical ACDF changes, cervicovertebral ligament anomalies, repetitive microtrauma from serial CEI's, and epidural space comprom

Mid-cervical interneuron networks following high cervical spinal cord injury.

Spinal interneuron (IN) networks can facilitate respiratory motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). We hypothesized that excitatory synaptic connectivity between INs located immediately caudal to unilateral cervical SCI would be most prevalent in a contra- to ipsilateral direction. Adult rats were studied following chronic C2 spinal cord hemisection (C2Hx) injury. Rats were anesthetized and ventilated and a multi-electrode array was used to simultaneously record INs on both sides of the C4-5 spinal cord. The temporal firing relationship between IN pairs was evaluated using cross-correla

[Effects of cervical vertebrae degeneration on traumatic cervical cord injury].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of cervical vertebrae degeneration on traumatic cervical cord injury. METHODS: From January 2009 to December 2010, 24 patients with cervical cord injury without obvious fractures and dislocations were treated with operation, and their data were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 16 males and 8 females, aged from 46 to 70 years old with an average of 59.1 years. Patients were divided into light degeneration group (6 cases), moderate degeneration group (10 cases) and severe degeneration group (8 cases), according to the preoperative degenerative degree of c

Cervical spinal cord injury in children.

We examined 19 children under 10 years of age with cervical spinal cord injury using clinical records and radiographs. The children were divided into two groups: Eight had immediate and complete spinal cord injury, and 11 had incomplete or partial spinal cord injury. Those with complete spinal cord injury were injured in motor vehicle accidents with a proximal spinal cord injury. Eighty-eight percent had cervical spine fractures/instability with a distraction pattern of injury. Half had associated trauma. The mortality rate was 25%, and those who survived showed no neurologic improvement. Most

So-called tethered cervical spinal cord.

A case is reported of the so-called Tethered Cervical Spinal Cord Syndrome presenting as multiradicular pain on an upper limb in a 45-year old woman, in whom spina bifida occulta (C6) was associated with an intramedullary lipoma, intradural fibrous adhesions and the fusion of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. Surgical release of the tether was ineffective, and the patient underwent a posterior rhizotomy for pain relief. The clinical and maldevelopmental aspects of this most uncommon form of spinal cord tethering are discussed briefly.

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation of the cervical cord modulates lumbar networks.

It has been established that coordinated arm and leg (A&L) cycling facilitates corticospinal drive and modulation of cervico-lumbar connectivity and ultimately improves overground walking in people with incomplete spinal cord injury or stroke. This study examined the effect of noninvasive transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) on the modulation of cervico-lumbar connectivity. Thirteen neurologically intact adults participated in the study. The excitability of the Hoffmann (H) reflex elicited in the soleus muscle was examined under multiple conditions involving either the arms held in a

[Schwannoma of the cervical spinal cord with cervical angina: a case report].

A case of schwannoma of the cervical spinal cord presenting with cervical angina is reported. A 49-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with severe chest pain, cold sweats, and unconsciousness. Extensive cardiac examination showed no abnormal findings. Neurological deficits were muscular weakness and atrophy of the left arm, bilateral hypersthesia of the arms, and hyporeflexia of the left biceps. MRI revealed a tumor in the left side of the spinal canal between C4 and C5. The diagnosis was neurinoma of the left nerve root in C5. The tumor was completely removed surgically by laminectomy.

Cervical disc herniation as a trigger for temporary cervical cord ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Disc herniations are only reported in few case reports as a rare cause of acute spinal ischemia. A surgical treatment has not been described so far in these reports with analysis of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI/MRI) before and after surgery. The aim of our study is to report a case of cervical spinal cord ischemia caused by cervical disc herniation and discuss the literature concerning diagnostic and treatment options. METHODS: A 72-year-old female patient developed an acute progressive tetraparesis with emphasis on the upper extremities. MRI showed a disc he

Cervical spinal stenosis and sports-related cervical cord neurapraxia in children.

STUDY DESIGN: Congenital spinal stenosis has been demonstrated to contribute to cervical cord neurapraxia after cervical spinal cord injury in adult athletes. A sagittal canal diameter <14 mm and/or a Torg ratio (sagittal diameter of the spinal canal: midcervical sagittal vertebral body diameter) of <0.8 are indicative of significant cervical spinal stenosis. Although sports-related cervical spine injuries are common in children, the role of congenital cervical stenosis in the etiology of these injuries remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: The authors measured the sagittal canal diameter and the Torg

Transient oedema of the cervical spinal cord.

Transient but very intense oedema of the cervical spinal cord was observed in two patients with obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathways. Both presented with hydrocephalus, one due to an infratentorial obstructing mass and the other due to postmeningitic adhesive obstruction of the outlet foramina of the fourth ventricle. In animal experiments with obstruction of CSF pathways (due to outlet foramina obstruction or to downward tentorial herniation) flattening and stretching of the ependymal cells along the central canal is observed, followed by disruption and splitting of the epend

Dysraphic lesions of the cervical spinal cord.

Cervical spina bifida, either occult or overt, is relatively uncommon. These lesions tend to be associated with other abnormalities of the central nervous system and spine. For the occult dysraphic lesions, a Klippel-Feil syndrome is a particular association, especially the type I variety. For the spina bifida cystica lesions, the more common associated features include a Chiari II malformation and hydrocephalus. Spina bifida cystica in the cervical region is different from the myelomeningocele of the lower spine and is characterized by two types of abnormalities: the myelocystocele herniating

[Compression of the cervical spinal cord in achondroplasia].

Two cases of tetraparesis due to cervico-occipital spinal cord compression in infants with achondroplasia are reported. Neurological disorders in achondroplasia are produced by structural anomalies of the cranium and spinal canal. They can be divided into two categories: hydrocephalus and radicular and spinal cord compression syndromes. Cervico-occipital compression is more frequent in childhood and may occur very early, in the first months of life. Early diagnosis of this complication and anatomic evaluation can now be obtained by computed tomography, which shows the exact dimensions of the f

Dynamic compression of the cervical spinal cord.

The authors report the radiographic and pathologic findings in 10 Great Dane dogs with the wobbler syndrome. In all 10 dogs it was possible to demonstrate myelographically that there was cervical spinal cord compression at 1 or 2 sites. The spinal cord compression was mainly dynamic in nature, as degree of compression increased in extension and decreased in flexion of the neck in 8 dogs. In 1 dog with deformed vertebral bodies (G6 and C7), compression increased slightly in flexion of the neck. In another dog, compression was lateral and could only be seen in the ventrodorsal view. The macrosco
