The tapeworms of fishes (Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii) account one-third (1670 from around 5000) of the total tapeworm (Platyhelminthes: Cestoda) species diversity. In total 1186 species from 9 orders occur as adults in elasmobranchs (sharks, rays and chimaeras), and 484 species from 8 orders mature in ray-finned fishes (referred to here as teleosts). Teleost tapeworms are dominated by freshwater species (78%), but only 3% of elasmobranch tapeworms are known from freshwater rays of South America and Asia (Borneo). In the last 2 decades, vast progress has been made in understanding species

The development of cysticerci of Taenia crassiceps to mature tapeworms in the intestinal tract of cortisone-treated and untreated golden hamsters is described. The development of the worms in untreated hamsters is as follows. Maturation and branching of the uterus and the presence of ova in the uterus were observed on day 15 postinfection (PI). By day 21 PI, fertilization had taken place, as evidenced by the presence of sperm in the seminal receptacle. On day 28 PI, shelled eggs were observed in feces. The rate of development of the worms in cortisone-treated hamsters was similar to that obser

Taenia species of domestic dogs can cause cysticercosis and coenurosis in a wide range of intermediate hosts including humans. Most taeniids of dogs are globally distributed, but some wildlife-transmitted species can be specific for certain regions. Generally, little information exists on the species composition and frequency in most regions of the world, which impairs risk assessment and control strategies. This study determined the range of taeniid species in dogs in four widely spaced areas of Kenya by genetic identification of eggs in faeces collected from the environment. Individual taeni

The presence of host inflammatory cells inside the spiral canal of all viable Taenia solium cysts obtained from naturally infected pigs is described. Cells can penetrate into the vicinity of suckers and rostellum, although most appear damaged, suggesting that conditions in the canal are deleterious for them. These observations extend the localization of host inflammatory infiltrate to this intricate microniche, which may offer new approaches for the treatment of cysticercosis, based on a scolex-targeted action. The presence of host cells in the canal of cysts also poses the problem of the resu

An investigation of the chemotherapeutic and biochemical effects of two benzimidazole anthelmintics, thiabendazole (TBZ) and cambendazole (CBZ), on Hymenolepis diminuta in experimentally infected rats is reported. Thiabendazole was active against H. diminuta at a relatively high dosage. A single oral dose of TBZ at 250 mg/kg body weight on day 15 of infection eliminated 100% of the tapeworms as determined at necropsy 5 days after treatment. The chemotherapeutic actions of TBZ on H. diminuta were accompanied by marked changes in worm weight and chemical composition. Tapeworms recovered from rat

Collections from the dwarf sawfish, Pristis clavata, near Darwin, Australia, in 1997 led to the discovery of the new onchoproteocephalidean genus Matticestus n. gen.-a taxon that has been referred to in molecular phylogenetic analyses in which it has been included as "New genus 8." Its type species, Matticestus anneae n. gen., n. sp., and a second species, Matticestus kathleenae n. sp., are described. Placement of this taxon in the Onchoproteocephalidea is supported morphologically in that both species bear a scolex with 4 bothridia each with a pair of bi-pronged hooks and spinitriches that ex

In this study, the relationships of the cestode order Bothriocephalidea, parasites of marine and freshwater bony fish, were assessed using multi-gene molecular phylogenetic analyses. The dataset included 59 species, covering approximately 70% of currently recognised genera, a sample of bothriocephalidean biodiversity gathered through an intense 15year effort. The order as currently circumscribed, while monophyletic, includes three non-monophyletic and one monophyletic families. Bothriocephalidae is monophyletic and forms the most derived lineage of the order, comprised of a single freshwater a

The Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, has been considered one of the most dangerous parasites for cultured carp and a risk for native freshwater fish populations worldwide. This cestode is highly pathogenic for fishes especially fry. In this paper we record B. acheilognathi parasitizing the endangered and endemic freshwater fish Profundulus hildebrandi from the endorheic basin of San Crist6bal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. B. acheilognathi was recorded from 10 of the 11 sampled localities, with high values of prevalence (> 60%) and mean abundance (> 4.50). The infection was

In mice concurrently infected with Hymenolepis citelli and Nematospiroides dubius, survival of the tapeworm was prolonged, and there was an impairment of the efferent arm of the response to the cestode. The immunological rejection of a six cysticercoid primary H. citelli infection was delayed by the N. dubius infection. The growth of the cestode was poorer in concurrently infected mice, and this effect was rapid, being evident within 4 days of the N. dubius infection. Maximum biomass in the controls was reached on Day 20, whereas in the concurrently infected mice it was reached on Day 25. The

Some groups of Diphyllobothriid tapeworms can cause foodborne or waterborne taeniasis, yet their systematics and evolution remain poorly understood. Based on mitochondrial genome data, this study reconstructed the phylogenetic trees of 11 cestode orders using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, clarified the valid species of Spirometra, traced the evolutionary history of four key ecological traits, and estimated the divergence times of major groups. Phylogenetic analyses supported Diphyllobothriidea and Bothriocephalidea as distinct clades, with Diphyllobothriidea forming a sister group t

The cestode Hymenolepis diminuta is highly prevalent in wild rat populations and has also been observed rarely in humans, generally causing no apparent harm. The organism has been studied for decades in the laboratory, and its colonization of laboratory rats has recently been shown as protective against some inflammation-associated disorders. Recently, H. diminuta has become a leading candidate for helminth therapy, an emerging method of "biota enrichment" used to treat or prevent inflammatory diseases of humans in Western society. While most of the experimental isolates of H. diminuta are ide

Dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. The number of eggs in strobiles has been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production of the tapeworm per day (10.43 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximum number of eggs in a mature strobile (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg number in a mature strobile.

A type of Diphyllobothrium plerocercoid found in blue whiting, Micromestius poutasson, caught near the north edge of the Faeroe Banks, is described. The most dominant characters of these larvae are their typical dorsoventrally flattened body and their fully extruded and "adult"-like scolex. A morphological comparison with perocercoids of D. dendriticum, D. ditremum and D. latum is given.

Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus including species seldom investigated in sub-Saharan Africa. We surveyed wild small mammal populations in the areas of Richard Toll and Lake Guiers, Senegal, with the objective to evaluate their potential role as intermediate hosts of larval taeniid stages (i.e. metacestodes). Based on genetic sequences of a segment of the mitochondrial DNA gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), we identified Hydatigera parva metacestodes in 19 out of 172 (11.0%) Hubert's multimammate mice (Mastomys huberti) and one out of six (16.7%) gerbils

The first human case of Diplogonoporus balaenopterae infection is reported in Korea. The patient was a 41-year old male who passed a part of cestode strobila, about 1 m long, spontaneously in his stool. He used to eat raw marine fish when he drank alcohol. The worm was identified as D. balaenopterae after morhological observations and literature review. Results of laboratory examination were within normal limits except for slight eosinophilia (6%) and extraordinarily high serum Ig E level (10,182 IU/ml).

Hymenolepis diminuta exhibits 2 concurrent migrations: an age-dependent, forward migration and a circadian migration. In experiments where the age of worms was assumed to be uniform throughout the test-day, 2 patterns (7-day-old and 16-day-old) of circadian migration were seen and an apparent reversal in circadian pattern suggested. In experiments where the age of worms became progressively older during the test-day, only the 16-day-old pattern was seen and no reversal was observed. The 7-day-old pattern and hence the apparent reversal in circadian migration is postulated to be an artifact of
