Several studies have examined the goals and outcomes of chaplaincy within institutional settings. Our study contributes to the literature by examining whether chaplaincy goals and outcomes are specific to different outpatient, primary, and community care contexts. We conducted a round of 9 and one of 8 focus groups, with clients, chaplains, and other professionals from five contexts: the Dutch earthquake zone, general healthcare, pediatric palliative care, care for the unhoused, and veteran care. Using an explorative, descriptive and quantitative design, 77 goals and 59 outcomes are compared a

This longitudinal study determined relationships among spirituality, religious practices, chaplaincy services, and health outcomes for 71 individuals with chronic disabilities (i.e., TBI, SCI, Guillain-Barré syndrome) in an inpatient rehabilitation program in southeastern USA. Demographic variables, number of chaplaincy sessions, and measures of religiosity/spirituality (i.e., Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality) and health outcomes (i.e., World Health Organization Quality of Life) were collected during inpatient rehabilitation (Time 1; n = 71) and at 6 months post-dis

Reports the results of an informal survey of over seventy emergency room (ER) nurses regarding the risk of infection to the bereaved due to blood and body fluid exposure when they are in contact with the deceased shortly after death. Results indicated that the nurses never considered the possibility of this risk. Notes that although the risk of HIV is less likely due to the fragile nature of the virus, hepatitis B and other infectious diseases can be transmitted. Suggests that hospital chaplains are in a unique position to assist in the protection of the bereaved from this potential hazard.

The case study seeks to describe an oncology chaplain's pastoral relationship with a 64-year-old woman with advanced metastatic breast cancer. The patient's distress was complicated by a history of anxiety and other chronic medical conditions. Approximately 16 pastoral encounters occurred during the last year of the patient's life. The patient, chaplain, and the pastoral conversations are presented as well as a retrospective assessment of them. The chaplain's interventions were appropriate for the patient's spiritual needs, particularly in regard to her fear of death, loneliness, grief that he

OBJECTIVE: To describe experiences of serious illness including concerns, preferences, and perspectives on improving end-of-life (EOL) care in underserved inpatients.
METHODS: Qualitative analysis of 1-hour interviews with inpatients at a public hospital whose physician "would not be surprised" by the patient's death or intensive care unit (ICU) admission within a year. Patients who were non-English speaking, lacked mental capacity, or had uncontrolled symptoms were excluded. A semistructured interview guide was developed and used for all interviews. We digitally recorded, transcribed, and co

The aim of this study was to document the longitudinal experiences of chaplains who served during both the early AIDS (1981-1995) and early COVID-19 (2020-2021) pandemics. A total of 11 hospital chaplains were interviewed across the USA and the United Kingdom. Interviews were analyzed using a Grounded theory approach. Chaplains reported multiple stressors during both pandemics, including barriers to integration into care teams, tensions with home religions institutions, burnout, and challenges arising from the politicization of disease. Despite these challenges, chaplains play a vital role dur

OBJECTIVE: Engaging bereaved parents in the review process that examines their care before and after a perinatal death might help parents deal with their grief more effectively and drive improvements in patient safety. The objective of this study is to explore whether healthcare professionals would accept or support parent engagement in the perinatal mortality review process.
DESIGN: Qualitative focus group interviews. Transcripts were analysed with an inductive thematic approach.
SETTING: Two geographically distinct tertiary maternity hospitals in the UK.
PARTICIPANTS: Five focus groups we

INTRODUCTION: Distress negatively affects cancer outcomes. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends screening patients for distress by a self-reported scale (0-10) and referring those with scores ≥4 to supportive services (SSs). Little is known about the prevalence of distress and healthcare utilization in classical Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs): polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), myelofibrosis (MF).
METHODS: We retrospectively identified MPN patients at our center to measure the proportions of patients with distre

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Public involvement can impact on research, on the public who give advice, on the researchers and the research participants. Evaluating impact is an important part of the research process. Two members of a hospital-based patient research panel and our coordinator have written this paper. Our panel covers a range of rehabilitation and palliative services. These services form the "Therapeutics and Palliative Care Directorate". We describe how we worked collaboratively with hospital staff and co-produced questionnaires to evaluate the impact of our involvement. We compared t

PurposePrior research has suggested that art-based interventions may reduce anxiety in cancer patients and enhance dialogue in the healthcare setting. Through implementing Art at the Bedside, an art-based hospital visitation program, we sought to examine whether dedicated art observation sessions, and varying formats (with and without guided discussion), could have therapeutic effects on cancer patients' mental wellbeing.MethodsThis randomized controlled pilot study evaluated the effects of bedside art observation on anxiety in a sample of 73 hematologic cancer inpatients. We compared state an

BackgroundWe evaluated whether patients' initial screening symptoms were related to subsequent utilization of supportive care services and hospitalizations, and whether patient-level demographics, symptoms, hospitalizations, and supportive care service utilization were associated with mortality in primarily low-income, older, Black Veterans with cancer.MethodsThis quality improvement project created collaborative clinics to conduct cancer distress screenings and refer to supportive care services at an urban, VA medical center. All patients completed a distress screen with follow-up screening e

BackgroundIncreasing evidence has suggested that a person-centred approach (PCA) is beneficial not only for improving care outcomes but also for mitigating the pressure on public health systems. However, policy implementation gaps have prevented the translation of this complex framework into useful practical, ethical and moral stances for end-of-life care (EOLC). This article aims to explore the meaning and implications of person-centredness in EOLC policy discourses.MethodsBy perceiving policy documents as a medium embodied with socio-political and cultural norms, we analysed how PCA in EOLC

PurposePatients with advanced cancer typically demonstrate sharp deterioration in physical function and psychological status during the last months of life. This study evaluates the relationship between survival in patients with advanced cancer and longitudinal assessment of anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain interference, and/or physical function using the US National Institute of Health Patient Reported Outcomes Information System.MethodsMixed-effects models were used to evaluate patient-reported outcome trajectories over time among patients with advanced loco-regional or metastatic cancer r

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. A significant proportion of all patients with cancer require radiotherapy as part of their treatment. Cancer can be very terrifying for patients undergoing radiotherapy, especially when it undermines their ability to hope or cope. In Ghana, where religious and spiritual beliefs play a significant role in many individuals' lives, understanding how these factors affect patients' well-being during cancer treatment is crucial. This study examined the contribution of spirituality and religiousness to the quality of life (QoL)

Cancer is the third-leading cause of death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); cancer care in the UAE has evolved dramatically over the last 40 years, from a single center in Al Ain in 1981 to more than 30 cancer centers and clinics across the UAE, with at least four comprehensive cancer centers in the UAE nowadays. Despite the significant progress in medical care, cancer quality control across the UAE is still lacking, with significant variations in cancer care across the cancer centers. Access to clinical trials is still hampered by a lack of expertise and research infrastructure and a small
