The Role of the Eyelids of the Black-Winged Kite, Elanus caeruleus in the Immune Protection of the Eye.

This study aimed to describe the morphological features and microstructure of the upper, lower, and third eyelids of the black-winged kite, Elanus caeruleus, and to characterize the organized lymphoid follicles and lymphocytes in the eyelid mucosa. Additionally, it aimed to illustrate the importance of the eye adnexa in the eye's immune protection. The upper, lower, and third eyelids display varying morphological differences that seem to be closely linked to the birds' way of life, indicating adjustments to their environment and eating behaviors. The black-winged kite has large, forward-facing

Host diversity and behavior determine patterns of interspecies transmission and geographic diffusion of avian influenza A subtypes among North American wild reservoir species.

Wild birds can carry avian influenza viruses (AIV), including those with pandemic or panzootic potential, long distances. Even though AIV has a broad host range, few studies account for host diversity when estimating AIV spread. We analyzed AIV genomic sequences from North American wild birds, including 303 newly sequenced isolates, to estimate interspecies and geographic viral transition patterns among multiple co-circulating subtypes. Our results show high transition rates within Anseriformes and Charadriiformes, but limited transitions between these orders. Patterns of transition between sp

Fatal Diplostomum phoxini infection in captive Atlantic puffin Fratercula arctica chicks following ingestion of infected European minnows Phoxinus phoxinus.

Conservation of endangered animal species is a major task of zoos. Husbandry and breeding of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica in captivity is challenging. In 2019, the entire chick population (n = 4 chicks) in Berne Animal Park's Atlantic puffin colony (Bern, Switzerland) died within 7 d. Due to supply constraints, the chicks had been fed with wild-caught European minnows Phoxinus phoxinus. At necropsy, the main pathological finding in all deceased puffin chicks was a multifocal, moderate to severe subacute heterophilic and granulomatous enteritis with intralesional adult trematodes and egg

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Alter the Hepatic Expression of Genes Involved in Sanderling (Calidris alba) Pre-migratory Fueling.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) impaired pre-migratory fueling in 49 orally dosed Sanderling (Calidris alba). In the present study, 8 genes related to fat deposition and PAH exposure were measured in liver subsamples from these same shorebirds. At the highest dose (1260 µg total PAH [tPAH]/kg body wt/day), PAH exposure decreased liver basic fatty acid binding protein 1 (Lbfabp) and hepatic lipase (Lipc) expression. The present study reveals candidate molecular-level pathways for observed avian pre-migratory refueling impairment. Environ Toxicol Chem 2021;40:1983-1991. © 2021 SETAC.

Deterrence of birds with an artificial predator, the RobotFalcon.

Collisions between birds and airplanes can damage aircrafts, resulting in delays and cancellation of flights, costing the international civil aviation industry more than 1.4 billion US dollars annually. Driving away birds is therefore crucial, but the effectiveness of current deterrence methods is limited. Live avian predators can be an effective deterrent, because potential prey will not habituate to them, but live predators cannot be controlled entirely. Thus, there is an urgent need for new deterrence methods. We developed the RobotFalcon, a device modelled after the peregrine falcon, and t

RETROSPECTIVE MORTALITY REVIEW OF TUFTED PUFFINS (FRATERCULA CIRRHATA) AT A SINGLE INSTITUTION (1982-2017).

Tufted puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) are commonly exhibited in zoologic institutions across the world, yet there is a paucity of information on causes of mortality in managed populations. This retrospective review reports the pathologic findings associated with 91 tufted puffins at a single institution over 35 years from 1982 to 2017. Common pathologic findings were evaluated by age at death, sex, year, and season. With the exception of neonates, the leading pathologic finding across all age classes was aspergillosis, particularly in adults. Hemoparasitism, predation, and trauma were also freq

Mortality in Common (Sterna hirundo) and Sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) Terns Associated with Bisgaard Taxon 40 Infection on Marco Island, Florida, USA.

Widely distributed aquatic species such as terns are highly dependent on, and can serve as indicators of, the global health of marine and other aquatic environments. Documented mass mortality events in terns have been associated with anthropogenic, weather-related and, less commonly, infectious causes. This study describes a multispecies mortality event associated with brevetoxicosis and Bisgaard taxon 40-induced sepsis involving common (Sterna hirundo) and sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) terns off the southwest coast of Florida, USA, in November and December 2018. During an approximately 6

High Mortality in Terns and Gulls Associated with Infection with the Novel Gull Adenovirus.

High mortality in Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) and Great Black-headed Gulls (Larus ichthyaetus), was recorded on the northeastern shores of the Caspian Sea in June 2013. Retrospective high throughput sequencing of archived tissue samples conducted in 2018 revealed the presence of the recently identified novel gull adenovirus similar to that associated with mortality in gulls in the Netherlands in 2001. We suggest that that this gull adenovirus specifically can be considered as an emerging threat to the health and conservation of gulls and terns.

Community structure of lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) from two sympatric gull species: kelp gull (Larus dominicanus) and Franklin's gull (Larus pipixcan) in Talcahuano, Chile.

A total of 1,177 lice of four species were collected from 124 kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) and 137 lice of the same four species from 60 Franklin's gulls (Larus pipixcan). The louse Saemundssonia lari (O Fabricius) (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) was the most numerous on both gull species, with infestation rates of 4.9 on kelp gulls and 1.8 on Franklin's gulls. The second most abundant louse was Quadraceps punctatus (Burmeister), with a high infestation rate but low prevalence on kelp gulls; those parameters were much lower among lice from Franklin's gulls. New Insight Into Avian Papillomavirus Ecology and Evolution From Characterization of Novel Wild Bird Papillomaviruses.

Viruses in the family Papillomaviridae have circular dsDNA genomes of approximately 5.7-8.6 kb that are packaged within non-enveloped, icosahedral capsids. The known papillomavirus (PV) representatives infect vertebrates, and there are currently more than 130 recognized PV species in more than 50 genera. We identified 12 novel avian papillomavirus (APV) types in wild birds that could represent five distinct species and two genera. Viruses were detected in paired oropharyngeal/cloacal swabs collected from six bird species, increasing the number of avian species known to harbor PVs by 40%. A new

Assessing the impact of urban landfills as feeding sites on physiological parameters of a generalist seabird species.

The increasing human population and associated urban waste pose a significant threat to wildlife. Our study focused on the Kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), known for opportunistic feeding in anthropogenic areas, particularly urban landfills. We assessed the physiological status of Kelp gulls at a landfill and compared it with gulls from a protected natural site. Results indicate that gulls from the anthropogenic site exhibited lower levels of key physiological parameters linked to diet, including triglycerides, total proteins, uric acid, plasmatic enzyme activity, body condition index, and leuko

Novel adenovirus associated with common tern (Sterna hirundo) chicks.

Adenoviruses have been identified in a wide variety of avian species, and in some species, they have been shown to cause disease and increase mortality. As part of an endeavor to investigate viruses associated with common terns (Sterna hirundo), a novel adenovirus was identified in fecal samples from two common terns on Gull Island, Lake Ontario, Canada. The coding-complete genome sequence of the new adenovirus is 31,094 bp, containing 28 putative genes, and this is the first adenovirus to be associated with terns. The virus was identified in two out of 13 fecal samples from tern chicks, and i

Algal toxins in Alaskan seabirds: Evaluating the role of saxitoxin and domoic acid in a large-scale die-off of Common Murres.

Elevated seawater temperatures are linked to the development of harmful algal blooms (HABs), which pose a growing threat to marine birds and other wildlife. During late 2015 and early 2016, a massive die-off of Common Murres (Uria aalge; hereafter, murres) was observed in the Gulf of Alaska coincident with a strong marine heat wave. Previous studies have documented illness and death among seabirds resulting from exposure to the HAB neurotoxins saxitoxin (STX) and domoic acid (DA). Given the unusual mortality event, corresponding warm water anomalies, and recent detection of STX and DA througho

[Reduction in variability of individual colonization programs in black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) leads to reproductive success diminishing].

The problem of adaptive significance of territorial antagonism in colonial birds is addressed. Many of these birds are characterized, along with high tolerance to each other and tendency to aggregate, by intensive and variable territorial demonstrations. Here we consider the effects of territorial behavior on the viability of a breeding colony. We observed breeding of black-headed gull in two colonies formed under the impact of a short-term temperature fall in 2008, which resulted in the 7-day shift in timing of egg laying. Compared with the colonies at the same places, one in 2007 and one in

Morphological studies of the pineal gland in the common gull (Larus canus) reveal uncommon features of pinealocytes.

The avian pineal is a directly photosensory organ taking part in the organization of the circadian and seasonal rhythms. It plays an important role in regulation of many behavior and physiological phenomena including migration. The aim of the study was to investigate morphology of the pineal organ in the common gull (Larus canus). The light and electron microscopic studies were performed on the pineals of juvenile birds living in natural conditions of the Baltic Sea coast, which have been untreatably injured during strong storms in autumn and qualified for euthanasia. The investigated pineals

A remarkable beak morphology in a bird skull from the Eocene of Messel (Germany) signifies unusual feeding specializations.

We report the skull of a new avian species from the latest early or earliest middle Eocene fossil site Messel in Germany. Aenigmatorhynchus rarus, gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by a long, straight, and pointed beak, as well as a mandible with prominent processus coronoidei, a very long symphysis, closely adjacent cristae tomiales, and a narrow dorsal sulcus along the tip. This unusual character mosaic impedes a straightforward phylogenetic assignment. In its proportions, the mandible is superficially similar to that of extant stilts (Himantopus, Recurvirostridae) and oystercatchers (Haemat

Experimental infection of North American birds with the New York 1999 strain of West Nile virus.

To evaluate transmission dynamics, we exposed 25 bird species to West Nile virus (WNV) by infectious mosquito bite. We monitored viremia titers, clinical outcome, WNV shedding (cloacal and oral), seroconversion, virus persistence in organs, and susceptibility to oral and contact transmission. Passeriform and charadriiform birds were more reservoir competent (a derivation of viremia data) than other species tested. The five most competent species were passerines: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), American Crow (Corvus brachy

Identifying Causative Agents of a Paretic Syndrome in Waterbirds in Southern Portugal.

Paretic and paralyzing syndromes affecting wild birds are widely described in the literature, with outbreaks showing an increase in frequency and intensity worldwide during recent years. In the Iberian Peninsula, a paretic clinical picture without known etiology affecting mostly gulls has been reported during the last few decades. This paretic syndrome (PS) affects waterbirds and is characterized by a set of signs of ascendent flaccid paralysis, dyspnea, and diarrhea at different levels of severity. This study presents the first macro-analysis of some potential etiological PS agents in wild bi

Heavy Rainfall, Sewer Overflows, and Salmonellosis in Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger).

Extreme weather events, particularly heavy rainfall, are occurring at greater frequency with climate change. Although adverse human health effects from heavy rainfall are often publicized, impacts to free-ranging wildlife populations are less well known. We first summarize documented associations of heavy rainfall on wildlife health. We then report a novel investigation of a salmonellosis outbreak in a colony of black skimmers (Rynchops niger) in Florida, USA. During June-September 2016, heavy rainfall resulted in the discharge of millions of gallons of untreated wastewater into the Tampa Bay
