OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency and extent to which subjects with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease report pain and to compare qualities of pain in CMT to other painful neuropathic conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive, nonexperimental survey, using a previously validated measurement tool, the Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS).
PARTICIPANTS: Participants were recruited from the membership roster of a worldwide CMT support organization.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: NPS pain descriptors reported in CMT were compared with those reported by subjects with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), complex region

A 61-year-old man, who suffered from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) for 44 years, was evaluated for the respiratory disorder. He had diaphragmatic dysfunction induced by phrenic nerve disturbance. In this patient, central type apnea and hypopnea related to diaphragmatic weakness occurred during REM sleep, which induced accessory inspiratory muscle inhibition. Respiratory muscle dysfunction had not been generally recognized in CMT until recently, but its significance should be emphasized.

We have carried out a hearing study with pure tone audiometry and ABR of 39 patients affected by hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy or Charcot-Marie Tooth disease. We have noticed a hearing deficiency in a significant percentage of cases (28%). We attribute the abnormalities to disorders in the area of the VIIIth nerve and of the brainstem. No significant differences appear in the results obtained between patients belonging to type I and patients belonging to type II of this disease.

A child with several episodes of supraventricular tachycardia was treated in our department from birth to the age of seven years. At this age a diagnosis of Charcot-Marie Tooth disease was made on the basis of the results of clinical and neurophysiological examinations, blood analysis and a neuromuscular biopsy. The association between sensorimotor neuropathies and cardiac involvement is controversial, especially at pediatric ages. We describe a case presenting this association.

This study presents the main clinical and electrophysiological features of patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease or hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) in Northern Finland diagnosed during the period 1969-1983. The group consists of 40 patients aged between 5 and 74 years. A positive family history suggesting a dominant inheritance was seen in 23 patients--the rest were classified as sporadic. According to median or sural nerve conduction velocities the disease was graded as demyelinating (HMSN type I) and neuronal (HMSN type II). A clear tendency towards an earlier onset

The preliminary study dealing with surgical treatment of foot deformity associated with CMT shows that the peroneal muscle may be functional in CMT but not measurable because of the deformity that it may have helped to create. The transfer of peroneus longus is designed to decrease deforming forces in conjunction with the Jones suspension that elevates the first ray. It assists the weak anterior muscle group. This, in addition to other surgical procedures as referenced, may be of help in correcting the foot deformity of CMT. Prognosis can be affected by the progression of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 2A (CMT2A) presents with optic atrophy in a subset of patients, but the prevalence and severity of optic nerve involvement in relation to other CMT subtypes has not been explored.
METHODS: Patients with genetically confirmed CMT2A (n = 5), CMT1A (n = 9) and CMTX1 (n = 10) underwent high- and low-contrast acuity testing using Sloan letter charts, and circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular total retinal, RNFL, and ganglion cell layer/inner plexiform layer thickness was measured using spectral domain optical coherence tomography

Patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease most commonly have a slowly progressive neuropathy where ankle dorsiflexion weakness is much more prominent than ankle plantar flexion weakness. The eventual involvement of the ankle plantar flexors has major functional consequences for patients as they lose the ability to stand still. We have found the knee bob sign whereby both knees bob up and down when standing still to be a reliable marker of ankle plantar flexion weakness in CMT.

INTRODUCTION: Distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN) is characterized by isolated distal muscle atrophy without sensory deficit. Nevertheless, clinical sensory loss has been reported despite preserved sensory nerve conduction in a few patients, thus differentiating these cases from the classical type 2 Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT2).
METHODS: We report 4 patients who presented with clinical sensory and motor neuropathy and normal peripheral sensory nerve conduction studies and were investigated with complete electrophysiological studies, including somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP).

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) <<disease>> is the generic name given to a group of genetic disorders characterized by a relatively isolated dysfunction of peripheral nerves, with combined motor and sensory impairment. These CMT syndromes are the most frequent genetically-determined peripheral neuropathies, with a global prevalence between 4.7 and 36/100,000. Their clinical phenotype is predominantly motor, with a grossly symmetrical distal amyotrophy involving both lower and upper limbs. Mode of inheritance is variable: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive or X-linked. Apparently sporadic forms

AIM: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a genetic neuropathy causing muscle weakening in the feet, legs and hands, with consequent impairment of ambulation and handgrip. For fast clinical evaluation and rehabilitation management of handgrip deficits, a functional classification in 4 stages or levels of clinical severity, based on the loss of handgrip types from the finest to the roughest, has been recently proposed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of each level of handgrip impairment in a wide population of patients affected with demyelinating and axonal CMT.
METHODS: Tw

We report the case of a young white man with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 that began at 4 years. At 15 years, he developed proteinuria, arterial hypertension, and renal insufficiency. Renal biopsy specimens studied by electron microscopy showed deposition of nonamyloidotic microfibrils. This is the first report of fibrillary glomerulopathy associated with this neurological disorder.

Crippling equinocavovarus position of the foot in advanced Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease with its attendant metatarsalgia tender calluses and rigidity creates painful, limited, hobbling ambulation with lowered work and general activity tolerance. The object of the surgeries is to convert this foot into a plantigrade , more flexible, painless unit. Surgery consists of plantar fasciotomies off the tubercle of the os calcis and also transversely through the middle of the longitudinal arch. Dorsally angulated green-stick osteotomies are performed at the bases of all the metatarsals. A Jones operatio

Neurofilaments (NFs) are the most abundant component of mature neurons, that interconnect with actin and microtubules to form the cytoskeleton. Specifically expressed in the nervous system, NFs present the particularity within the Intermediate Filament family of being formed by four subunits, the neurofilament light (NF-L), medium (NF-M), heavy (NF-H) proteins and α-internexin or peripherin. Here, we review the current knowledge on NF proteins and neurofilaments, from their domain structures and their model of assembly to the dynamics of their transport and degradation along the axon. To clarify the natural courses, medical conditions, and problems in daily life and medical care of the patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) in Japan, we have developed a patient registration system (CMT Patient Registry (CMTPR)). We analyzed data of questionnaires from 303 patients (males: 162, females: 141, mean age: 45.9 years old) who registered for CMTPR. The age of onset was less than 15 years old in 45% and more than 60 years old in 5% of the patients. Genetic testing was performed in 65%, and about half of the patients with genetic testing had a duplication of the PMP22 gene.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Genetic polyneuropathies are rare and clinically heterogeneous. This article provides an overview of the clinical features, neurologic and electrodiagnostic findings, and management strategies for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and other genetic polyneuropathies as well as an algorithm for genetic testing.
RECENT FINDINGS: In the past 10 years, many of the mutations causing genetic polyneuropathies have been identified. International collaborations have led to the development of consortiums that are undertaking careful genotype-phenotype correlations to facilitate the developm

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies, especially Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, are frequently expressed with an acquired cavusvarus foot which is characterized by a fixed increase of the plantar arch and hindfoot inversion. Diagnosis of the underlying condition achieved through careful patient assessment and local evaluations is the keystone for decision-making about the adequate treatment. The cavus may present as an isolated deformity of the forefoot, hindfoot or it may be a combination of both locations. Related deformities, mainly the varus and toe clawing require appropriate evaluatio
