Perspectives on trace chemical safety and chemophobia: risk communication and risk management.

Safety issues regarding consumer products contaminated with trace amounts of chemicals are of great concern to consumers, with the degree of concern occasionally escalating to the psychological syndrome, chemophobia (i.e., the fear of chemicals). Hazardous substances frequently implicated in safety concerns include heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead), volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as benzene and o-toluidine, pesticides, carcinogens, radioactive substances, and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) such as bisphenol A and phthalates. To improve communication of risk to soc

Chemical characterization and safety assessment of dokha: An emerging alternative tobacco product.

Dokha is known to be one of the most rapidly spreading alternative tobacco products (ATPs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It is smoked using a pipe known as Midwakh. There is no scientific research published on the chemical composition of dokha and only very little was done to investigate its impact on human health. Three different types of dokha were included in this study. The trace metals content in the dokha samples were analyzed using inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-scanning electron microscope. Dokha sm

Integrated post-closure safety assessment of radioactive waste containing hazardous chemicals: A screening framework for radiological-chemical risk.

Disposal of radioactive waste containing hazardous chemicals can generate post-closure radiological cancer risks, chemical cancer risks, and chemical non-cancer hazards. Existing assessments often treat radiological and chemical endpoints separately. This study develops an integrated post-closure assessment and screening framework that combines United States Environmental Protection Agency risk methods with AMBER dynamic compartment modeling, using the International Atomic Energy Agency Trench Case as a reference disposal system. A normalized generic assessment of selected metallic elements wa

Grouping of chemicals for safety assessment: the importance of toxicokinetic properties of salicylate esters.

Grouping of chemicals has been proposed as a strategy to speed up the screening and identification of potential substances of concern among the broad chemical universe under REACH. Such grouping is usually based on shared structural features and should only be used for the prioritization objectives. However, additional considerations (as well as structural similarity) are needed, e.g., mode of action, metabolic pathways, chemical reaction products and physicochemical properties, when regulatory management measures are considered (such as restriction, harmonized classification and labeling). Chemical and biochemical characterization and in vivo safety evaluation of pharmaceuticals in drinking water.

The water constituents that are currently subject to legal control are only a small fraction of the vast number of chemical substances and microorganisms that may occur in both the environment and water resources. The main objective of the present study was to study the health impact resulting from exposure to a mixture of pharmaceuticals that have been detected in tap water at low doses. Analyses of atenolol, caffeine, erythromycin, carbamazepine, and their metabolites in blood, urine, feces, fat tissue, liver, and kidney after exposure to a mixture of these pharmaceuticals in treated drinkin

Safety of dermal diphoterine application: an active decontamination solution for chemical splash injuries.

Diphoterine (Laboratoire Prevor, Valmondois, France) is an active, amphoteric, polyvalent, chelating, slightly hypertonic decontamination solution for chemical splashes to the skin and eyes. It chemically binds a large number of chemical substances present on the skin surface without causing a significant release of heat (exothermic reactions). Because of its amphoteric properties, it can bind chemically opposite substances such as acids and bases or oxidizers and reducing agents. No adverse effects have been observed in an ongoing postmarketing surveillance program during many years of use in

Chemical Peels in Skin of Color: A Scoping Review of Safety, Efficacy, and Practice Patterns.

Chemical peels are widely used for both cosmetic and medical dermatologic indications, but their application in individuals with skin of color (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) requires caution due to the increased risk of pigmentary complications. To assess their safety and efficacy, a comprehensive PubMed review was conducted, identifying 473 studies, seven of which met the inclusion criteria, specifically those articles documenting chemical peels in skin of color populations and reported primary outcomes. Among the seven included studies, five evaluated peels for the treatment of acne and acne

Aquatic environmental safety assessment and inhibition mechanism of chemicals for targeting Microcystis aeruginosa.

Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of Gram-negative bacteria that produce an array of secondary compounds with selective bioactivity against vertebrates, invertebrates, fungi, bacteria and cell lines. Recently the main methods of controlling cyanobacteria are using chemicals, medicinal plants and microorganism but fewer involved the safety research in hydrophytic ecosystems. In search of an environmentally safe compound, 53 chemicals were screened against the developed heavy cyanobacteria bloom Microcystis aeruginosa using coexistence culture system assay. The results of the coexistence assay s

[An experimental study of the safety of a chemical monovalent tableted cholera vaccine in enteral administration].

The safety of experimental chemical cholera monovalent vaccine in tablets, produced by the institute "Microbe" (Saratov, USSR), has been studied. The study has shown that the vaccine, administered to adult rabbits and germ-free suckling rabbits by the enteral route, retains residual toxicity, mainly due to the presence of O-antigen. One or two administrations of 1-2 human doses of this preparation to adult rabbits induce minimal structural changes admissible from the viewpoint of safety. After immunization made in two administrations immunobiological transformation develops more rapidly and is

An inadvertent issue of human retina exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals: A safety assessment.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a group of chemical compounds that present a considerable public health problem due to their pervasiveness and associations with chronic diseases. EDCs can interrupt the endocrine system and interfere with hormone homeostasis, leading to abnormalities in human physiology. Much attention has been focused on the adverse effects EDCs have on the reproductive system, neurogenesis, neuroendocrine system, and thyroid dysfunction. The eye is usually directly exposed to the surrounding environment; however, the influences of EDCs on the eye have received compa

An alternative approach for the safety evaluation of new and existing chemicals, an exercise in integrated testing.

Various in vitro and in silico methods without animals were applied to 10 substances listed on ELINCS with a complete VIIA base-set available at NOTOX. The hazard assessment for these substances was performed on basis of available non-animal data, QSAR, PBBK-modelling and additional, new in vitro testing was applied. Based on these data predictions on fish toxicity, acute toxicity, skin- and eye-irritation, sensitisation, and toxicity after repeated dosing were made. The predictions were compared with the outcome of the in vivo tests. Nine out of ten predictions on fish LC(50) proved to be cor

R3ACT: An Oxygen-Controlled Biosensor-Based NAM to Support Animal-Free Chemical Safety Assessment.

Most in vitro chemical safety workflows are performed in ambient air, although many human tissues experience substantially lower physiological oxygen levels. This mismatch can alter redox tone, stress-response signaling, and interpretation of chemical effects. Here, we present R3ACT (Redox & Antioxidant Capacity Tracker), an animal-free, oxygen-controlled live-cell NAM for mechanistic profiling of redox perturbation and antioxidant-response activation. In human HaCaT keratinocytes adapted to 5 kPa O₂, R3ACT combines viability-gated concentration selection, oxygen-controlled plate-reader measur
