In 1985, breast cancer will be diagnosed in approximately 120,000 women; in 90% of these women, the disease will apparently be limited to the breast and axillary lymph nodes. Despite advances in early diagnosis and primary treatment with surgery, radiation therapy, or both, more than a third of these patients will develop systemic disease and ultimately die. In the broadest sense, all of these patients are potential candidates for some form of systemic adjuvant therapy. Adjuvant therapy of breast cancer involves the use of cytotoxic drugs or endocrine therapy after definitive primary therapy.

We report 2 patients with breast cancer who were treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIa and stage I breast cancers. Follow-up CT scans showed an anterior mediastinal mass, raising concern for tumor recurrence. Thymectomy performed on the first patient, and close follow-up with radiographic studies on the second patient, revealed benign thymic enlargement. This study aims to evaluate the practice of adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer at the Institute of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. A retrospective analysis of 320 patients' records from 1986 to 1994 was carried out. Adjuvant chemotherapy was given to 98 patients. We report a case of superior mesenteric artery thrombosis in a 57-year-old woman undergoing chemotherapy for T1N1M0, breast cancer. Although cancer itself is associated with an increased risk of thrombotic events, treatment with chemotherapy and/or tamoxifen in breast cancer patients increases this risk. Most cases reported are of venous thromboembolism; arterial events are rare.
