Biochar reduces copper toxicity in Chenopodium quinoa Willd. In a sandy soil.

Mining, smelting, land applications of sewage sludge, the use of fungicides containing copper (Cu), and other human activities have led to widespread soil enrichment and contamination with Cu and potentially toxic conditions. Biochar (BC) can adsorb several substances, ranging from herbicides to plant-inhibiting allelochemicals. However, the range of potential beneficial effects on early-stage plant growth with regard to heavy metal toxicity is largely unexplored. We investigated the ameliorating properties of a forestry-residue BC under Cu toxicity conditions on early plant growth. Young quin

Genotype X Environment Interaction and Stability of Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa, Willd.) Genotypes for Yield and Yield-Related Traits in Ethiopia.

Agriculture is the pillar of Ethiopia's economy, employing over 80% of the population. However, it remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Promoting climate-smart agricultural practices is therefore critical. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), a highly nutritious pseudo-cereal with broad adaptability and efficient water use, presents a promising alternative crop for Ethiopia's diverse agro-ecologies. Its tolerance to drought and salinity makes it an ideal candidate for enhancing food and nutritional security under changing climate conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to

Ultraviolet B radiation improves salt-induced responses in the facultative halophyte Chenopodium quinoa.

In natural environments, plants are continuously exposed to multiple abiotic stresses, such as high salinity and excess ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation. While responses to individual stresses are well understood, less is known about their combined impact. Here, we treated quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seedlings with salt (0 and 200 mm NaCl) under either photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation (313 nm, 1 h/d, 1.71 W/m2) to investigate their response to combined salt and UV-B stress. While salinity had minimal effects on plant growth, it decreased stomatal co

Preventive Gastroprotective Effect of a Functional Food Based on Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) and Quercetin in a Murine Model of Ibuprofen-Induced Gastric Damage.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-based therapies are the cause of 20-30% cases of gastric lesions in chronic users worldwide. Co-medication with omeprazole (OMP) is the most commonly used option to prevent these lesions, although this carries risks of its own; thus, alternatives are being explored, such as dietary antioxidant therapies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the gastroprotective activity of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) on ibuprofen (IBP)-induced gastric ulcers in a rat model. Quinoa cookies were formulated with heat-treated quinoa using microwave radiation. The i

The combined effect of Cr(III) and NaCl determines changes in metal uptake, nutrient content, and gene expression in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.).

Many areas of the world are affected simultaneously by salinity and heavy metal pollution. Halophytes are considered as useful candidates in remediation of such soils due to their ability to withstand both osmotic stress and ion toxicity deriving from high salt concentrations. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) is a halophyte with a high resistance to abiotic stresses (drought, salinity, frost), but its capacity to cope with heavy metals has not yet been fully investigated. In this pot experiment, we investigated phytoextraction capacity, effects on nutrient levels (P and Fe), and changes in ge
