Effect of varicella vaccine introduction on chickenpox incidence in Kingdom of Bahrain.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious and self-limiting disease in children. However, complications and hospitalizations may occur. In Bahrain, the varicella vaccine was introduced into the routine childhood immunization schedule in May 2015. However, published data describing the epidemiological patterns of varicella postvaccine introduction are limited. PURPOSE: This study aimed to estimate varicella vaccine effectiveness (VE); investigate changes in varicella incidence and seasonal variation; compare age groups, healthcare utilization, and hospitalization; and identify

Parental perceptions of chickenpox and the varicella vaccine: A qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In countries where varicella vaccination is not on the routine childhood immunisation schedule, such as those in the United Kingdom (UK), chickenpox is an almost universal disease of childhood. Chickenpox can cause serious complications, particularly in infants, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised. In November 2023 the varicella vaccine was recommended for inclusion in the UK routine childhood immunisation schedule. Successful rollout of the vaccine may be hindered by parental concerns about vaccine safety and efficacy, and perceptions of chickenpox as a mild illness. OBJECT

UK has implemented routine vaccination for children against chickenpox.

A universal chickenpox vaccination has been included in the routine childhood immunisation programme since January 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; given in a two-dose schedule at 12 and 18 months as part of the combined measles/mumps/rubella/varicella (MMRV) vaccine. New evidence on the burden of disease in the UK and on whether circulating varicella zoster virus reduces shingles cases in older adults has led to this new recommendation. The MMRV is an established vaccine with good evidence to its efficacy and safety, including demonstration of significant reductions in chickenpox-

Severe chickenpox disease and seroprevalence in Sweden - implications for general vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the current panorama of severe chickenpox disease and seroprevalence in Sweden, as a basis for the approaching decision on universal vaccination. METHODS: Patients discharged with an International Classification of Diseases 10th revision-code for chickenpox (B01-B01.9) in eight pediatric and infectious diseases departments in Stockholm and Gothenburg in 2012-2014 were included in the study and their medical charts were reviewed. Further, residual serum samples collected from 11 laboratories across Sweden were analyzed for varicella zoster IgG-antibodies to investigate

[Vaccination against rubella, measles, chickenpox, and mumps in nursing students].

The past history of infection and vaccination, and serum antibodies against rubella, measles, chickenpox, and mumps were investigated, before vaccine was inoculated in the susceptible nursing students. The subjects were 221 nursing students (208 women, 13 men, the average age 18.4 +/- 1.8 years old) who entered Nagasaki University from 2001 to 2003. The positive rates of the past history of rubella, measles, chickenpox, and mumps were 49.8%, 28.1%, 86.4%, 50.7%, and that of previous vaccination were 31.7%, 69.2%, 10.9%, 5.3%, respectively. The serum antibody was measured with HI assay for rube

Should the chickenpox vaccine be included in the National Immunization Schedule in India?

Varicella (chickenpox) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease with worldwide distribution. The highest prevalence occurs in the 4-10 year age group but tends to be more severe in adults. It may be fatal in neonates, immunocompromised persons, and normal adults, especially smokers. Varicella is usually a benign childhood disease, and rarely rated as an important public health problem, but this can be severe and even fatal in otherwise healthy children (< 1 out of every 10,000 cases). Chickenpox can cause pneumonia (23 out of every 10,000 cases), and is an important risk factor for develop

Chickenpox complications in Saudi Arabia: Is it time for routine varicella vaccination?

INTRODUCTION: Varicella zoster (chickenpox) infection is a common and benign disease of childhood. The predominance of uncomplicated cases in children tends to overshadow the morbidity associated with severe cases and the resultant hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to establish the complication rate of chickenpox in the Saudi National Guard population over a 2(1/2)-year period. METHODS: All reported cases of chickenpox at the King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh were prospectively followed for development of complications during the period between 1 June 2001 and 30 December 2003.

Modeling the effects of varicella vaccination programs on the incidence of chickenpox and shingles.

Two possible dangers of an extensive varicella vaccination program are more varicella (chickenpox) cases in adults, when the complication rates are higher, and an increase in cases of zoster (shingles). Here an age-structured epidemiologic-demographic model with vaccination is developed for varicella and zoster. Parameters are estimated from epidemiological data. This mathematical and computer simulation model is used to evaluate the effects of varicella vaccination programs. Although the age distribution of varicella cases does shift in the simulations, this does not seem to be a danger becau

Chromosomal studies in children with mumps, chickenpox, measles and measles vaccination.

A study to assess chromosomal damage in persons with acute viral diseases was undertaken in view of conflicting reports in the literature concerning such damage. Forty children with measles, mumps, and chickenpox, or who had received measles vaccine, were investigated and compared with a control group of 12 children. No greater incidence of chromosomal abnormalities was found in the study group than in the control group.

[Epidemiological analysis of immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases: rubella, measles, mumps and chickenpox].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Measles, mumps, rubella and varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections are regarded as typical diseases of childhood: They are normally clinically mild and result in lifelong immunity. Severe clinical disease is known in immunocompromised patients; rubella virus infections during pregnancy often result in congenital rubella syndrome. All these diseases are preventable by vaccination which is recommended in Germany, recently vaccination against VZV for teenager without immunity since July 2001. In the following study we screened for immunity against the four viruses. PAT

Experimental studies on the prevention and treatment of chickenpox and herpes zoster with measles vaccine.

In 151 chickenpox patients treated with live attenuated measles vaccine, the cure rate was 100%. In 145 cases of herpes zoster, the effective rate was 100% (completely cured in 91.7% and improved in 8.3%). In the treated group, the time needed for the subsidence of fever and skin rash and the duration of the disease were markedly shorter than those in the control group (P less than 0.01). It is particularly effective for alleviating pain, preventing and relieving postherpetic neuralgia in patients with zoster. The application of measles vaccine to the patients in the chickenpox incubation peri

Evaluation of impact of one dose varicella vaccine on the incidence of chickenpox in Argentina.

INTRODUCTION: Varicella, also known as chickenpox is one of the most common immunizable diseases. In 1998, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended to incorporate this vaccine in the national immunization programs, which Argentina did in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To describe the behavior of the varicella time series for the 2005-2017 period, and to evaluate the impact of the vaccine in Argentina. METHODOLOGY: An ecological observational study was performed, using the varicella cases reported in the National Health Monitoring System, and the data of the National census as secondary data source
