Adoptive parent hostility and children's peer behavior problems: examining the role of genetically informed child attributes on adoptive parent behavior.

Socially disruptive behavior during peer interactions in early childhood is detrimental to children's social, emotional, and academic development. Few studies have investigated the developmental underpinnings of children's socially disruptive behavior using genetically sensitive research designs that allow examination of parent-on-child and child-on-parent (evocative genotype-environment correlation [rGE]) effects when examining family process and child outcome associations. Using an adoption-at-birth design, the present study controlled for passive genotype-environment correlation and directl

Barriers to Adoption of a Child-Abuse Clinical Decision Support System in Emergency Departments.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children. The rate of missed child abuse in general emergency departments (ED), where 85% of children are evaluated, is higher than in pediatric EDs. We sought to evaluate the impact of an electronic health record (EHR)-embedded child-abuse clinical decision support system (CA-CDSS) in the identification and evaluation of child maltreatment in a network of EDs three years after implementation. METHODS: We anonymously surveyed all 196 ED attending physicians and advanced practice practitioners (APP) in the University of

Assessing parent privacy awareness and coping appraisals in the adoption of child-monitoring technologies.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the serious privacy risks inherent in child-monitoring technologies, privacy implications should be a fundamental component of digital parenting guidelines. Several adoption studies indicate that privacy concerns are among the most influential criteria determining users' intentions toward parental control applications (PCAs). However, the role of PCAs in enhancing children's digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness remains largely unexamined. Therefore, this study extends protection motivation theory (PMT) to investigate how privacy awareness and coping/threat appraisa

A case of a four-year-old child adopted at eight months with unusual mood patterns and significant polypharmacy.

BACKGROUND: Long-term effects of neglect in early life are still widely unknown. Diversity of outcomes can be explained by differences in genetic risk, epigenetics, prenatal factors, exposure to stress and/or substances, and parent-child interactions. Very common sub-threshold presentations of children with history of early trauma are challenging not only to diagnose but also in treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A Caucasian 4-year-old, adopted at 8 months, male patient with early history of neglect presented to pediatrician with symptoms of behavioral dyscontrol, emotional dysregulation, anxiety,

Discordances Between Serology and Culture for Strongyloides in an Ethiopian Adopted Child With Multiple Parasitic Infections: A Case Report.

RATIONALE: infectious diseases screening of international adoptees is complex because of the concurrence of different pathogens in a child at same time. We describe an international adopted child born at Ethiopia infected by 5 different pathogens (Hymenolepis nana, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Trichuris trichiura), 2 of them S. stercoralis and E. histolytica with a capacity to develop severe clinical complications if not detected promptly with appropriate diagnosis tests.Concerns of the patient: according to the screening protocol a stool sample i

Transactions between child social wariness and observed structured parenting: evidence from a prospective adoption study.

This investigation examined the mutual influences between structured parenting and child social wariness during toddlerhood using a longitudinal adoption design. The sample consisted of 361 adoption-linked families, each including an adopted child, adoptive parents, and a birth mother. Heightened social wariness in children at age 18 months predicted reduced levels of observed structured parenting (i.e., less directive parenting with fewer commands and requests) in adoptive mothers at age 27 months. Adoptive fathers' lower structured parenting at age 18 months predicted subsequent elevation in

Parenting interventions to support parent/child attachment and psychosocial adjustment in foster and adoptive parents and children: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adopted children and children placed in foster care are at increased risk of developing a range of mental health, behavioural, and psychosocial adjustment problems. Previous studies suggest that due to early experiences of separation and loss some children may have difficulties forming a secure attachment relationship with the adoptive/foster parents. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the present review were: (1) to assess the efficacy of attachment-based interventions on measures of favourable parent/child outcomes (attachment security, dyadic interaction, parent/child psychosocial a

[Being raised by lesbian parents or in a single-parent family is no risk factor for problem behavior, however being raised as an adopted child is].

Modern reproductive techniques and alternative family structures (with single or homosexual parents and adoption situations) raise questions about the consequences for the growing children involved. Genetic links appear to be less important for the functioning of a family than a strong wish for parenthood; parents who have become parents only through great efforts display a better quality of parenthood than average natural parents. Characteristics of the parent/parents, such as paedagogic qualities, and the quality of the parent-child relationship appear more important than the type of family.

"The Cost of Diagnostic Oversight: Rumination Misattributed to Attachment in a Child With Tourette Syndrome. How an Adopted Child Stopped Feeling Embarrassed and His Parents Blamed after a Specialist Assessment that Led to Psychoeducation and Evidence-Based Interventions".

This paper explores how an adoptive family's feelings of blame and embarrassment shifted after receiving an accurate diagnosis for their 9-year-old child. Narratives of attachment and trauma had been used previously to explain the child's rumination and regurgitation symptoms and excessive appetite from an early age. The paper outlines the assessment that ruled the previous explanation out and gave a diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder with an evidence-based pathway of care. It also examines the theory behind this revised formulation, integrating both environmental in

Using the 'F-words' to adopt a holistic and child rights promoting approach in developmental assessment clinics in Sydney: a quality improvement study.

BACKGROUND: The way childhood disability is understood and represented in various domains is evolving. The 'F-words for Child Development', derived from The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, is a framework that is gaining increasing prominence. This paper reports on a quality improvement project in South Western Sydney, designed to encourage a more holistic, strengths-based approach to assessment, formulation and documentation in a child developmental assessment service. We implemented the 'F-words' framework (Function, Family, Fitness, Fun and Friends) into r

Detailed monitoring of hematopoietic chimerism in a child treated by adoptive immunotherapy for high risk of relapse after BMT for acute myeloid leukemia.

We report a case of a 13-year-old boy who was transplanted for relapse of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A detailed study of hematopoietic chimerism was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) at very short time intervals. We used discontinuation of post-transplant immunosuppression and donor lymphocyte infusions (DLI) in order to prevent leukemia relapse that was indicated by a progressive increase in autologous hematopoiesis. Despite the fact that the boy relapsed 10 months after BMT, we could see a significant influence of adoptive immunoth

Adoption of Nutrition and Physical Activity Best Practices in the Early Care and Education Setting: Examination of Differences Between Centers and Family Child Care Homes.

Background: Early childhood interventions that support the development of healthy lifestyle behaviors are key to ensuring equitable health outcomes later in life. The aim of this article is to assess the extent to which early care and education (ECE) sites adopt best practices to support healthy diet and physical activity (PA) behaviors and whether adoption differs between centers and family child care homes (FCCHs). Methods: The study is a cross-sectional analysis of best practices at Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed)-eligible child care centers (n = 76) and FCCHs

Social inequalities in the risk of giving birth to a small for gestational age child in Sweden 2010-16: a cross-sectional study adopting an intersectional approach.

BACKGROUND: Well-established associations exist between the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and unidimensional sociodemographic factors. We investigated social inequalities in SGA risk and adopted an intersectional approach that simultaneously considers different social categories. By doing so, we could assess heterogeneities in SGA risk within unidimensional sociodemographic categories. METHODS: We included all live 679 694 singleton births in Sweden between 2010 and 2016. The outcome was SGA, and the exposures were age, maternal educational level, dichotomous migration status and ci

Mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus, its associated risk factors, and the adoption of maternal antiviral therapy in eastern China: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) remains a major global public health challenge. While the World Health Organization has set ambitious targets for elimination of MTCT, achieving these goals in high-burden countries like China requires robust, real-world evaluation of preventive strategies. Our study aims to analyze the effectiveness of preventing MTCT of HBV and the associated risk factors. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study comprised 16,223 pairs of hepatitis B surface antigen-positive mothers and infants from 2021 to 2023 in geographical regions r

The adoption and implementation of an evidence based practice in child and family mental health services organizations: a pilot study of functional family therapy in New York State.

Numerous challenges persist in providing evidence-based treatments to children and families in community-based settings. Functional Family Therapy (FFT), one such evidence-based treatment, is a family prevention and intervention program for adolescents with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder. This paper presents pilot data in support of a conceptual framework explaining the adoption and implementation of FFT in a small sample of family and child mental health services organizations in New York State. The conceptual framework is grounded in the diffusion of innovations and the or

Adopting a user-centred design approach for the development of on-device technology to prevent the viewing of child sexual abuse material: app design insights and principles from the development of 'Salus'.

INTRODUCTION: The volume of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) available online and the global demand for it has reached unprecedented levels. Increasing numbers of individuals concerned about their online behaviour are contacting therapeutic providers for help and support outside of the criminal justice system. Previous research asking individuals what would help them to stop viewing CSAM suggests that the availability of a technological solution to voluntarily self-manage access to CSAM could be an effective tool. AIM: To explore the findings from the user-centered design (UCD) of the 'Salu

Rethinking the role of the pretend play mode in mentalisation-focused psychoanalytic child therapy for adopted and foster children with attachment trauma: from a pre-mentalising mode to a developmental achievement and a milestone on the trajectory towards mentalisation.

Pretend play is considered to be of great importance in both normal and problematic child development. However, the developmental and therapeutic value of pretend play has perhaps been somewhat overshadowed by the classification of the pretend mode as a non-mentalising mode, a perspective from literature on mentalisation-based psychotherapy with personality disordered adults. In this article, we highlight this difference in emphasis. After having situated this subtle and not seldom unacknowledged difference in meaning surrounding the concept of pretend mode, we focus on psychodynamic child psy
