[Behavioral modification psychotherapies in the autistic child].

Behavioral modification psychotherapies, largely diffused in the anglo-saxon countries, are used here for treating severely autistic children, hospitalized in a child psychiatry service for at least one year. Using Kanner's clinical study on childhood autism, the same syndrome is being described in behavioral terms. This new approach is the basis for the therapeutic project, both on practical and theoretical grounds. To illustrate the method and its application, three observations of children hospitalized between 1976 and 1977 are presented. The results are summarized and discussed (Acta psych

Helping the Noncompliant Child and Child Behavior Outcomes: An Exploratory Examination of Financial Strain.

Theoretical models and empirical research have highlighted the impact of economic disadvantage on children's psychosocial development broadly and the onset, maintenance, and treatment of early-onset (3-8 years) behavior disorders (BDs) more specifically. In the context of intervention, evidence suggests that economic disadvantage may pose risk for diminished parent-mediated treatment efficacy (e.g., Behavioral Parent Training [BPT]) given its impact on salient factors in the family system. Though, studies have shown significant variability in BPT outcomes within families experiencing economic

Multiple Family Groups to reduce child disruptive behavior difficulties: moderating effects of child welfare status on child outcomes.

Children who remain at home with their permanent caregivers following a child welfare (CW) involvement (e.g., investigation, out-of-home placement) manifest high rates of behavioral difficulties, which is a risk factor for further maltreatment and out-of-home placement if not treated effectively. A recently tested Multiple Family Group (MFG) service delivery model to treat youth Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) has demonstrated effectiveness in improving child behavior difficulties among hard-to-engage, socioeconomically disadvantaged families by addressing parenting skills, parent-child r

Parenting stress and child behavior problems: Developmental psychopathology perspectives.

The growing base of research on parenting stress and its relation to child behavior problems has largely paralleled the emergence of developmental psychopathology as a field of inquiry. Specifically, the focus on mechanism rather than main effects has begun to elevate explanatory models in the connection between parenting stress and a variety of adverse child and parent conditions. Still, work on parenting stress is limited by conceptual confusion, the absence of attention to developmental differentiation, a focus on child-specific rather than system influences. Recent research on these parent

The Nisonger Child Behavior Rating Form: typical IQ version.

The Nisonger Child Behavior Rating Form (NCBRF) has been used in several large studies of risperidone in children with low IQs (36-84) and disruptive behavior disorders (conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder). We wanted to develop a companion instrument for assessing 'typically developing' children and adolescents. In this study, we modified the NCBRF and obtained parent ratings on 485 typically developing children attending regular classes. We also obtained parent ratings on 46 children with conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Factor analyses of the ratings produc

Child behavior and accidental injury in 11,966 preschool children.

Social and behavioral characteristics of 11,966 British children, aged 5 years, and mothers' reports of accidental injuries between birth and age 5 years were analyzed. Aggressive behavior was associated with all accidental injuries after controlling psychosocial variables including social class; crowding; mother's psychological distress, age, and marital status; and child's sex. Overactivity was associated only with injuries not resulting in hospitalization after control of the covariates. The relative risk of injuries resulting in hospitalization was 1.9 among children with both high activit

Behavior therapy for a child with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

The behavioural symptoms in a 10-year-old boy with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome were effectively ameliorated by the behavior therapy techniques of systematic desensitization and extinction. Therapy was undertaken in a highly controlled environment. The hypothesis that the self-destructive behaviours in this syndrome were voluntary and maintained through continuous reinforcement was confirmed. Characteristic biting and other maladaptive behaviours were extinguished. Over a period of time it was possible to remove all the physical restraints previously used to prevent the boy injuring himself. During tr

Parenting Stress, Child Weight-Related Behaviors, and Child Weight Status.

Background: There has been limited examination of the association between parenting stress and child weight-related behaviors. We aimed to determine whether parenting stress is associated with child weight-related behaviors, including physical activity, screen time, diet, sedentary time, and eating in the absence of hunger (EAH). Secondarily, we assessed association between parenting stress and child weight status. Methods: Mother-child dyads (N = 291) enrolled in the Newborn Epigenetic STudy (NEST), a longitudinal cohort study, completed surveys to describe parenting stress, and child diet. C

Assessing childhood maltreatment exposure using the child behavior checklist.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has broad and severe adverse effects in later life, but there are not enough studies conducted during childhood close to the time of maltreatment. Most studies have focused only on a single symptom and have not attempted to capture the global picture of CM. METHODS: We used the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to assess children's behavioral/emotional problems more comprehensively. This study leveraged 32 CM children and 29 typically developing (TD) children who have been assessed using the CBCL 4-18 from our dataset. Group comparisons of the eight sub

Parents' perception of child behavior, parenting stress, and child abuse potential: Individual and partner influences.

Based on the Social Information Processing model of parenting risk for child abuse, the present study examined the associations between mothers' and fathers' perception of child behavior and child abuse potential, as well as whether parenting stress mediates the association between these constructs. Two hundred and fifty-nine mother-father couples raising preschool children answered the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI). The results of dyadic path analysis showed that perception of child behavior was related to hei

Physical violence, child abuse, and child homicide : A continuum of violence, or distinct behaviors?

The study of child abuse and child homicide has been based on the often implicit assumption that there is a continuum of violence ranging from mild physical punishment to severe abuse and homicide. Empirical data supporting this assumption are sparse. Existing data can be shown, however, to support an assumption that there are distinct forms of violence, not a continuum. This paper reviews these data and discusses their implications for the study of violence, abuse, and homicide in terms of substantive and methodological explanations. In addition, the implications of the assumption that violen

Developmental Feeding Stages and Their Impact on Child Feeding Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that critical periods of feeding skills development exist and feeding problems can arise in children due to delays in attaining feeding developmental milestones. This study aims to delineate the transitional process of feeding development in healthy children and children with gastrointestinal diseases (GIDs) and to examine the relationship between feeding milestones and the appearance of later feeding problems. METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study among 711 healthy Greek children and 119 children with GID, aged 2-7 years. Parents completed the

Child Physical Abuse, Non-anemic Iron Deficiency and Behavior Problems.

PURPOSE: Child abuse is regarded as a life-course social determinant of health problems. However, little is known about the nutritional status of physically abused children and their cumulative effect on child behavior. The present study aimed to examine the non-anemic iron deficiency status of abused children and the combined effect of physical abuse and non-anemic iron deficiency on child behavior in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 314 children aged 11-14 (12.30±0.57) years old from Jintan, China. Children self-reported their physical abuse experiences and behavior prob

[The behavior of the hospitalized child awaiting a surgical operation].

The literature and personal experience are referred to in an assessment of psycho-affective situations in hospitalised children awaiting non-emergency surgery (appendicectomy, adenotonsillectomy, inguinal hernia, phymosis, hypospadias, cryptorchidism). Psychological and somatic damage resulting from an absence of preparation before hospitalisation and during admission immediately prior to surgery is described. A method whereby this may be avoided as far as possible with the aid of relatives is described.

Child Maltreatment, Problem Behaviors, and Neighborhood Attainment.

Using data from a prospective cohort design study of a group of children with documented histories of abuse and neglect (n = 908) and matched controls (n = 667), this paper examines whether problem behaviors (e.g., prostitution, crime, school problems, and homelessness) in young adulthood explain the link between maltreatment in childhood and living in high-risk neighborhoods in middle adulthood. Problem behaviors were assessed at mean age of 29 and neighborhood characteristics were assessed at mean age of 40. Child maltreatment predicted living in less desirable neighborhoods in middle adulth

Child-to-parent violence: emotional and behavioral predictors.

Child-to-parent violence (CPV) includes acts committed by a child to intentionally cause physical, psychological, or financial pain to a parent. Available data indicate increasing rates of CPV in Spain, which have been attributed to a tendency toward more permissive parenting styles and changes in the power cycles within the families. The primary aim of this study was to assess the predictive role of some behavioral and emotional characteristics of adolescents who perpetrate CPV. A total of 1,072 adolescents (601 girls) filled out measures of CPV, proactive and reactive aggression, depressive

Offender Characteristics and Behaviors in NonSexual Child Maltreatment.

Data on 552 child maltreatment cases in South Korea involving convictions, including child physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect, were analyzed in order to compare 259 offenses committed by male offenders with 293 offenses committed by female offenders. Relative to cases involving female offenders, male offenders both had a higher number of criminal convictions and were more likely to have previously abused their victims. By contrast, female offenders were more likely to have had financial difficulties, while their victims were significantly younger compared to male offenders. Male offe
