Factors associated with two types of child custody loss among a sample of African American mothers: A novel approach.

African American families are overrepresented in the Child Welfare System; however, extant research on this phenomenon has (1) focused mostly on Caucasian or mixed-race samples and (2) has not examined informal custody arrangements alongside official child custody loss. This research addresses these gaps in the literature by examining factors associated with both official and informal child custody loss among a sample of African American mothers. Multinomial regression results show that having ever been incarcerated following a conviction increases the odds of experiencing both types of custod

A longitudinal analysis of the impact of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers.

UNLABELLED: This study examines the influence of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers. Two types of custody loss are examined: informal custody loss (child living apart from mother but courts not involved), and official loss (child removed from mother's care by authorities). METHODS: Using data from 339 African American women, longitudinal random coefficient models analyzed the effects of each type of custody loss on subsequent drug use and crime. RESULTS: indicated that both informal and official custody loss predicted increased drug use, and i

Children in child protective services custody experience higher risk of intramuscular medication and physical restraints in a pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between child protective services (CPS) involvement and the risk and timing of intramuscular (IM) medication or physical restraint use in pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with behavioral health concerns. METHODS: An electronic health record dataset spanning January 2021 to October 2023 was retrospectively analyzed. Individual cumulative incidence plots and Cox regression models were created to model the risk and risk rate of receiving either IM medication or being physically restrained by different levels of CPS involvement. "I felt for a long time like everything beautiful in me had been taken out": Women's suffering, remembering, and survival following the loss of child custody.

BACKGROUND: Child Protective Services' (CPS) placements of children in out-of-home care disproportionately impact families marginalized by poverty, racism and criminalization. CPS' mandate to protect children from neglect and abuse is frequently criticized as failing to address the multiple social and structural domains shaping parents' lives, especially mothers. METHODS: We conducted a thematic narrative analysis of in-depth interviews to explore the impact of child custody loss on 19 women who use drugs residing in Toronto, Canada. We also assessed the potential roles of intersectional form

"I don't try to seek him out": Views of child support over time.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines how mothers with limited incomes think about the relationship between child support, making ends meet, and co-parenting relationships early in children's lives. BACKGROUND: Research has documented how formal and informal child support can be important resources for custodial parents and their children. Whether and how child support arrangements are made can be complicated by relationship dissolution, parental repartnering, and co-parents' relationship quality. Prior studies suggest relationship dynamics shape the financial support that non-custodial parents prov

Genetic drift: A case of abuse.

In this essay, an infant with multiple fractures is removed from the custody of her parents because of suspected child abuse. Subsequently studies reveal that the child has osteogenesis imperfecta, type III. Though the child is eventually returned to the mother's custody, her entire first year has been spent in foster care. The essay illustrates the toll taken on families when a diagnosis of OI is missed or delayed.

When is a parent out of the picture? Different custody, different perceptions.

This study investigated how 200 children from mother-, father-, or joint-custody arrangements perceived their divorced families. The authors argue that it is not the type of custody that shapes the child's view of whether one parent is peripheral but, rather, the nature of relationships within the various custody arrangements.

The pathway to grandparenting stress: trauma, relational conflict, and emotional well-being.

OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the mediating effect of child-grandparent conflict on the relationship between child trauma exposure and grandparenting stress. METHODS: Data was collected from a sample of custodial grandparents who participated in kinship care or relative caregiving programs (n = 251). Grandparenting stress was measured with Parenting Stress Scale (Berry & Jones, 1995 ) modified for grandparents. A series of regression models and structural equation models (SEM) were used to test the relationship between the number of different types of child trauma exposures and grandparenti

Custody Evaluation Process and Report Writing.

As in western countries, divorce rates in South Korea have recently been rising, and family disruption has become one of serious social problems. Parents are able to express their opinions and wishes confidently, but the thoughts and wishes of children, especially infants and young children, tend to be ignored. Children can also experience several emotional and behavioral problems during the process of and after their parents' divorce. When South Korean family courts determine custody arrangements, they typically do not have a systematic strategy and process based on custody evaluation to help

Parental alienation in Lebanon: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Parental alienation is a relatively newly described disorder, with a growing prevalence, as divorce and custody battles are becoming more and more complex with increased difficulty of joint custody. In parental alienation, one parent, the alienating parent, forms an alliance with the child involved in the custody dispute and manages to effectively alienate the targeted parent completely. The child and the alienating parent manifest a form of folie à deux and, hence, are in complete synchrony in the hatred and denigration of the targeted parent. Issues, such as potentially false all

Accessibility of child protection investigations during pandemic: A qualitative analysis of court proceedings.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative research using published court records to examine contextual factors that contribute to child protection decisions in cases involving parents with intellectual disabilities is limited, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: The present study conducted qualitative content analysis on 10 published Ontario court cases to study child protection decision-making between 2019 and 2021. RESULTS: The findings corroborated previous literature with nine out of 10 cases resulting in loss of child custody. Four major themes emerged from content analysis: (1) Impact of

Custody and visitation. Problems and perspectives.

Child custody and visitation remain vexing problems requiring input from mental health professionals as public policy decisions are formulated. Difficult problems do not have easy solutions, but through continued exploration of the issues using clinical and research methods, perhaps innovative programs will be developed and evaluated. Ultimately, this may lead to better ways of helping families cope with the trauma and the consequences of the family break-up and the resulting attempt to establish custody and visitation.

A study of families in high-conflict custody disputes: effects of psychiatric evaluation.

Each year approximately 2.5 million people divorce, subjecting more than 1 million children to the losses of familial breakup. Hostility in families can be greatly exacerbated by parents' repeated failures to negotiate an altered lifestyle for the family which provides for the children's best interests. Interventions with highly conflictual parents and their children must necessarily address the interface between the mental health and legal professions. How families experience this process must be carefully studied in order to create new strategies for change, not only within the families, but

Emergency department presentation of 'delusional parasitosis by proxy'. Delusional parent, injured child.

We report a case of 'delusional parasitosis by proxy'. A sixyear old child was brought to the emergency department by a mother with concerns that her son had a skin and scalp infestation. Despite the absence of any clinical findings being found on exam, the mother remained disproportionately concerned. Follow up care was recommended with the child's primary care. The mother returned to the ED with her child three weeks later with concerns that her son had an inflamed scalp and eyes. The mother remained insistent that the child was infested with bugs and she had sought care at two other locatio
