Mental health services use by children investigated by child welfare agencies.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the rates and predictors of mental health services use for a nationally representative cohort of youths who had been investigated for alleged maltreatment. METHODS: Data came from caregiver and caseworker baseline and 18-month interviews in the second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. These interviews took place from March 2008 to September 2008 and September 2010 to March 2011. Data on family and child characteristics and service use were gathered and examined by using weighted univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Children had numerous chall

Adolescents' use of maternal and child health services in developing countries.

CONTEXT: Because of high levels of early childbearing in developing countries, pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of death among women aged 15-19. Use of skilled antenatal and delivery care improves maternal outcomes through the prevention, management and treatment of obstetric complications, and infant immunizations prevent many childhood diseases. METHODS: Logistic regression analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data for 15 developing countries examined adolescents' use of antenatal care, delivery care and infant immunization services compared with use by older women. European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) practical guidance for clinicians and mental health services regarding child to adult mental health service transitions and managed discharge at the service boundary.

The European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) clinical guidance on transition supports care across the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) and adult mental health service (AMHS) boundary throughout Europe. It outlines practices, procedures, and service environments to promote appropriate, safe and timely transition of young people from child and adolescent to adult mental health services or alternative care settings. The guidance addresses planning, decision-making and discharge management at CAMHS and, where needed, continuity in AMHS. The development of the

The Impact of Conflict on Maternal and Child Health Services: A Scoping Review.

Conflicts are unavoidable aspect of human existence, causing disruptions in livelihoods, infrastructure, socioeconomic systems and healthcare access. Among the most severe effects of conflict are those on maternal and child health (MCH) services, on which there is a notable scarcity of research. Consequently, this scoping review examines the impact of conflict on the accessibility of MCH services and their associated treatment outcomes and identifies limitations. A review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping R

Age at orchidopexy as an indicator of the quality of regional child health services.

Early treatment for primary undescended testis (UDT) is necessary to prevent testicular degeneration and improve fertility. The general recommended age for orchidopexy is before 2 years of age. Comparing the age distribution of orchidopexy between different services may give an indirect indication of the quality of the child health services, since timely diagnosis and referral will lead to boys undergoing orchidopexy at the optimal age. This paper reviews the age distribution of boys having orchidopexies for UDT between 1997 and 2006 in the South Island of New Zealand and the state of Victoria

Child Abuse Management Units: How can Mental Health Services be Further Improved?

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a broad term that includes physical, sexual, and emotional (e.g., psychological, verbal) abuse. There are huge variations with regard to the level of severity and the consequences of abuse. Because child abuse is such a sensitive topic, it is a challenging task to conduct studies concerning this subject. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to identify areas that could be improved to offer better health care services to patients. Therefore, routine assessments, the characteristics of the cases, and the types of follow up were emphasized. METHOD: The Norwegian Minist

Maternal and child health services for medically indigent children and pregnant women.

Millions of low-income children and women of childbearing age are completely uninsured. Medicaid, the nation's largest public health financing program for the poor, is an inadequate resource for uninsured families with children. By 1984, the program served only 46% of the poor and near-poor, down from 65% in 1976. To assess the availability of maternity and pediatric services for low income uninsured women and children, a survey of 51 Title V Maternal and Child Health agency officials was conducted in 1986. While nearly all states (48) offer some prenatal care programs for indigent women, rest

Factors associated with mental health services referrals for children investigated by child welfare.

Although child welfare caseworkers are responsible for facilitating mental health services access for maltreated children, little is known about caseworkers' decisions to refer children to services. We aimed to identify factors associated with caseworker referral of children to mental health services after a maltreatment investigation. We analyzed data from 1956 children 2-17 years old from the Second National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being. We examined associations of children's predisposing, enabling, and need-related factors and caseworkers' work environment characteristics with

A community survey on maternal and child health services utilization in rural Ethiopia.

A household health interview survey on MCH services utilization was carried out in 22 villages of a rural district of Arsi region, Ethiopia, before the launching of an integrated MCH programme. Coverage of antenatal services was 26%, and 61% of the women who received antenatal care reported having had 3 or more visits. Antenatal care was positively associated with living within 10 km of the Health Centre. Twenty-eight percent of the mothers attended the under-5 clinic and most returned for 3 or more visits. In addition, 99% reported having breast-fed their last child but more than 25% started

Emergency Department Use for Mental Health Problems by Youth in Child Welfare Services.

OBJECTIVES: In Canada, little research has focused on emergency department (ED) use by youth involved with child welfare services, a vulnerable population. Our aims were therefore (1) to examine the characteristics of ED users among child welfare-involved youth, 2) to identify predictors of ED use and 3) to identify youth trajectories to EDs. METHODS: Data were collected from child welfare charts from two agencies in Montreal, Canada. Logistic regression was conducted to determine the predictors of ED use. Latent class analysis was used to identify trajectories to the ED. RESULTS: The sample

Do adult mental health services identify child abuse and neglect? A systematic review.

Child abuse and neglect play a causal role in many mental health problems. Knowing whether users of mental health services were abused or neglected as children could be considered essential for developing comprehensive formulations and effective treatment plans. In the present study we report the findings of a systematic review, using independent searches of three databases designed to discover how often mental health staff find out whether their clients were abused or neglected as children. Twenty-one relevant studies were identified. Most people who use mental health services are never asked

Families' Public and Private Safety Nets and Child Mental Health Outcomes Among Families Involved with Child Protective Services.

The mental health of children is a growing public health concern, and the prevalence and severity of mental health symptoms are significantly higher for children whose families are involved with child protective services (CPS). Among families in the general population, a strong family safety net can help guard against risks and promote child mental health; however, research on the safety nets of families involved with CPS is limited. Using the family stress model as a theoretical foundation, we conducted growth curve analyses to determine the extent to which different categories of family safe

Relationship between entry into child welfare and mental health service use.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between initiation of outpatient mental health service use and level of child welfare involvement. METHODS: Three levels of child welfare involvement were examined: in-home care and no child welfare services beyond an initial investigation, in-home care and additional child welfare services, and placement in out-of-home care (foster care). Longitudinal data were collected for a subsample of children (N=3,592) aged two through 14 years who were enrolled in the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being, a nationally representative sample
