Natural Language Processing - A Surveillance Stepping Stone to Identify Child Abuse.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to refine a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm that identified injuries associated with child abuse and identify areas in which integration into a real-time clinical decision support (CDS) tool may improve clinical care. METHODS: We applied an NLP algorithm in "silent mode" to all emergency department (ED) provider notes between July 2021 and December 2022 (n = 353) at 1 pediatric and 8 general EDs. We refined triggers for the NLP, assessed adherence to clinical guidelines, and evaluated disparities in degree of evaluation by examining associations between demogra

The Influence of Caregiver Language on the Association Between Child Temperament and Spoken Language in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the interaction between child temperament and caregiver linguistic input (i.e., syntactic complexity and lexical diversity) on receptive language in children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). DESIGN: Families of 59 DHH children ( Mage = 5.66 years) using spoken language for communication participated in this cross-sectional study. Caregivers completed the Child Behavior Questionnaire-Short Form, which measured child temperament across three established factors (i.e., effortful control, negative affectivity, surgency-extraversion) and participated with their child i

Medical profile of the language-delayed child: otitis-prone versus otitis-free.

Delay in language development may be associated with an underlying anatomical, neurosensory, or psychological disorder such as: deafness, cerebral palsy, cleft palate, autism, or mental retardation. A condition called specific developmental language delay may occur in children devoid of any other identifiable disorder or developmental delay. Language delay associated with early onset, severe-to-profound hearing impairment has been well documented. Controversial studies have also appeared in the communicative disorders' literature suggesting that fluctuating conductive hearing loss in early chi

Playmasters at Work: Trauma Processing and the Shared Language of Play in Child Analysis.

Therapeutic play is a foundational discovery from psychoanalysis and is now a major contribution to child treatment in all its forms. Underacknowledged derivatives from child's play in adult treatments include: the attention to principles of development; the application of nonverbal relational process; utilization of somatic movement; and above all, the therapeutic engagement with child self-states in the full spectrum of dissociative disorders. This case report describes psychoanalytic play with a therapist/analyst who is schooled in principles of trauma treatment and its dissociative manifes

Study of child language development and disorders in Iran: A systematic review of the literature.

Child language development and disorder in Iran has been the focus for research by different professions, the most prominent ones among them being psychologists and speech therapists. Epidemiological studies indicate that between 8% and 12% of children show noticeable signs of language impairment in the preschool years; however, research on child language in Iran is not extensive compared to studies in English speaking countries, which are currently the basis of clinical decision-making in Iran. Consequently, there is no information about the prevalence of child language disorders in Iranian p

Using large language models to generate child-friendly education materials on myopia.

AIM: To evaluate the ability of large language models (LLMs) to produce patient education materials for myopic children and their parents. METHODS: Thirty-five common myopia-related questions were used with two distinct prompts to produce responses aimed at adults (Prompt A) and children (Prompt B). Five ophthalmologists evaluated the responses using a 5-point Likert scale for correctness, completeness, conciseness, and potential harm. Readability was assessed via Flesch-Kincaid scores. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to identify significant differences in LLM performanc

Normal language skills and normal intelligence in a child with de Lange syndrome.

The subject of this case report is a 2-year, 7-month-old girl with de Lange syndrome, normal intelligence, and age-appropriate language skills. She demonstrated initial delays in gross motor skills and in receptive and expressive language but responded well to intensive speech and language intervention, as well as to physical therapy. This favorable outcome provides an important example of the beneficial effects of therapy, even for clients with conditions generally believed to have a poor prognosis.

Child speech, language and communication need re-examined in a public health context: a new direction for the speech and language therapy profession.

BACKGROUND: Historically speech and language therapy services for children have been framed within a rehabilitative framework with explicit assumptions made about providing therapy to individuals. While this is clearly important in many cases, we argue that this model needs revisiting for a number of reasons. First, our understanding of the nature of disability, and therefore communication disabilities, has changed over the past century. Second, there is an increasing understanding of the impact that the social gradient has on early communication difficulties. Finally, understanding how these
