Experiences and factors affecting poverty among families raising a child with a disability: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Children with disabilities and their families are more likely to live in poverty than those without a disability. However, little is known about their lived experiences and the circumstances that influence their socio-economic condition. The aim of this study was to understand the experiences and factors affecting poverty among families raising children with disabilities. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted while searching eight international databases (Embase, Healthstar, Medline, PsycINFO, Econlit, Scopus, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts). About 2351 articles were in

The Long Arm of Poverty: Extended and Relational Geographies of Child Victimization and Neighborhood Violence Exposures.

Current models of neighborhood effects on victimization predominantly assume that residential neighborhoods function independent of their surroundings. Yet, a surprising proportion of violence occurs outside of victims' residential neighborhoods. The current study extends on recent advances in spatial dynamics and neighborhood effects to explore the importance of different geographic scales and relational exposures to poverty for child violent victimization. We examine longitudinal data on over 4,400 low-income children from high poverty neighborhoods in five cities, who participated in the Mo

[Effects of an early nursing intervention program for infants' development and mother's child rearing in poverty].

PURPOSE: This quasi-experimental study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of an early nursing intervention program to support mothers of children aged 0-3 yr living in poverty. METHODS: In this study, mothers who received financial support from the government were recruited from one city and assigned to an intervention group (24) and comparison group (18). They completed a baseline questionnaire about depression, child rearing burden, agreement on physical punishment, and child temperament. Also, Denver II screening of the children was performed by the researcher. Mothers in the inte

The Impact of Poverty-Related Policy Expansions on Child Maltreatment: A Scoping Review of a Broad Policy Set.

Given the strong link between poverty and child maltreatment, this study explores the impact of nine poverty-reduction policies-Childcare Subsidies, Child Tax Credits, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, Housing Choice Voucher, Minimum Wage, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-on child maltreatment outcomes. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we reviewed studies published through June 2025 across five databases (EBSCO, ProQuest, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed), focusing on articles assessin

A Universal Child Allowance: A Plan to Reduce Poverty and Income Instability Among Children in the United States.

To reduce child poverty and income instability, and eliminate extreme poverty among families with children in the United States, we propose converting the Child Tax Credit and child tax exemption into a universal, monthly child allowance. Our proposal is based on principles we argue should undergird the design of such policies: universality, accessibility, adequate payment levels, and more generous support for young children. Whether benefits should decline with additional children to reflect economies of scale is a question policymakers should consider. Analyzing 2015 Current Population Surve

Behavioral and musical characteristics of the children who are exposed to child maltreatment and poverty in South Korea: a survey.

A preliminary survey was conducted on primary school aged children (N=302) between seven to twelve years of age, who attend the local Community Child Centers (CCC) in the economically deprived areas of Jeollabukdo in South Korea for the purpose of identifying the children who have been exposed to on-going child maltreatment and poverty, and their needs. Both standardized and non-standardized self-report types of surveys were carried out and completed by both the children and the teachers of the CCC. As would be expected, emotional and behavioral problems are more pronounced by the children who

Family risk classes predict longitudinal parent and child outcomes: Understanding the implications of poverty-related adversity.

Experiencing poverty and associated risk factors can be detrimental to families' mental health and well-being. However, it is unclear whether experiencing specific types or patterns of adversity leads to distinct outcomes. Guided by the Family Stress Model, the objective of this study was to (a) identify unique family risk classes based on exposure to various combinations of poverty-related adversity and (b) examine whether the family risk classes differed in their levels of parental coping strategies, couple relationship quality, parenting practices, and child behavior problems. The sample in

Unconditional Cash and Breastfeeding, Child Care, and Maternal Employment among Families with Young Children Residing in Poverty.

Poverty interferes with parents' breastfeeding, child-care, and employment options and ability to meet their parenting goals. This study-the first randomized controlled trial of early childhood poverty reduction in the United States-investigates how increased economic resources affect 1,000 low-income US mothers' breastfeeding, child-care, and employment practices and the ability to meet their intentions for these practices in the first year of their infant's life. The likelihood and length of breastfeeding, use of nonparental child care, and maternal employment did not statistically differ am

Has the relationship between community poverty and child maltreatment report rates become stronger or weaker over time?

BACKGROUND: Poverty is among the most powerful predictors of child maltreatment risk and reporting. To date, however, there have been no studies assessing the stability of this relationship over time. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the county-level relationship between child poverty rates and child maltreatment report (CMR) rates changed over time in the United States in 2009-2018, overall and across of child age, sex, race/ethnicity, and maltreatment type. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: U.S. Counties in 2009-2018. METHODS: Linear multilevel models estimated this relationship and its longitudinal

Family Matters: Examining Child Abuse and Neglect as Family Dysfunction for Minority Youth Living in Extreme Poverty.

Two competing models of child abuse and neglect (scapegoat vs. family dysfunction) are used to illustrate how the specification of victims ("index" victim vs. all children in household) from incidents of child abuse and neglect can be used to improve estimates of maltreatment for at-risk minority youth. Child Protection Services records were searched in 2005 for 366 "index" victims who were surveyed for 5 consecutive years (from 1998 to 2002) for the Mobile Youth Survey as well as other siblings in the household. The findings indicate that the baseline estimate of any maltreatment, sexual abus

Positive parenting for positive parents: HIV/AIDS, poverty, caregiver depression, child behavior, and parenting in South Africa.

Families affected by HIV/AIDS in the developing world experience higher risks of psychosocial problems than nonaffected families. Positive parenting behavior may buffer against the negative impact of child AIDS-orphanhood and caregiver AIDS-sickness on child well-being. Although there is substantial literature regarding the predictors of parenting behavior in Western populations, there is insufficient evidence on HIV/AIDS as a risk factor for poor parenting in low- and middle-income countries. This paper examines the relationship between HIV/AIDS and positive parenting by comparing HIV/AIDS-af

Racial and ethnic differences in fatal child abuse and neglect and the intersection of community poverty: U.S., 2003 to 2022.

INTRODUCTION: In the U.S., child abuse and neglect (CAN) is a significant public health problem. Poverty is a well-known correlate of CAN. OBJECTIVE: Examine racial and ethnic differences in fatal CAN among U.S. children and the intersection of community poverty. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This study integrated National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data, county poverty data, and population estimates data. We used NVDRS data to examine fatal CAN for children aged 0-17 years for 2003-2022. Fatal CAN was defined as a homicide precipitated by abuse or neglect by a parent or caregiver. R

Exploring the Area-Level Link Between Poverty and Different Types of Child Maltreatment: Is Neglect the Most Pronounced?

We investigated whether poverty is primarily associated with neglect while showing weaker links to other forms of child maltreatment at the zip code level. To do this, we analyzed relationships between child poverty rates and maltreatment report rates for neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse across all Illinois zip codes from 2014 to 2018 (N = 1354). Our analysis showed that the unstandardized effect sizes for neglect were larger than those for physical and sexual abuse, primarily due to the higher prevalence of neglect reports, which leads to a larger absolute change. However, because un

Understanding the Mediation Effect of Social Cohesion on the Relationship Between Material Hardship and Child Maltreatment by Poverty Spells.

The purpose of this study is to explore the association between material hardship and child maltreatment, mediated by social cohesion. We used three waves (age three, age five, and age nine) from Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCW), a longitudinal cohort study of approximately 5000 families in 20 U.S. cities. The sample size was 2402. The independent variable was material hardship, and the dependent variable was child maltreatment (physical/psychological abuse and neglect). Using a multiple regression analysis, the current study found a positive association between material har

Household illness, poverty and physical and emotional child abuse victimisation: findings from South Africa's first prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Physical and emotional abuse of children is a large scale problem in South Africa, with severe negative outcomes for survivors. Although chronic household illness has shown to be a predictor for physical and emotional abuse, no research has thus far investigated the different pathways from household chronic illness to child abuse victimisation in South Africa. METHODS: Confidential self-report questionnaires using internationally utilised measures were completed by children aged 10-17 (n = 3515, 56.7% female) using door-to-door sampling in randomly selected areas in rural and urba

The mediating role of child delay of gratification in the link between early and prolonged poverty exposure and adolescent allostatic load.

Early and prolonged exposure to poverty disrupts biological processes associated with the body's stress response system, leading to long-term negative health outcomes, including obesity, autoimmune disorders, and cardiovascular disease. Allostatic load (AL), a composite measure of chronic stress on the body, is a robust predictor of subsequent health outcomes. However, developmental research examining the associations of early poverty exposure with AL in adolescence, as well as the underlying mechanisms of influence is limited. Early poverty exposure also impedes healthy development of child s

Pathways From Poverty to Child Mental Health in Burkina Faso: Longitudinal Mediation Analyses in a Cluster-Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: The study applies the Family Stress Model to examine the impact of an integrated intervention on the mental health of children facing chronic adversity in Burkina Faso. Its primary goal is to enhance understanding of individual and relational factors at the family level as mediators and specific mechanisms through which poverty reduction can impact child well-being. METHODS: Cross-lagged autoregressive longitudinal mediation analyses tested the intervention effect on child mental health, examining maternal depression, maternal anxiety, harsh parenting, and child exposure to abuse as

Mediating effects of parental psychological distress and individual-level social capital on the association between child poverty and maltreatment in Japan.

Child poverty is well known as a major risk factor for child maltreatment. However, it is not known whether parental psychological distress and individual-level social capital mediate the association. We examined the mediation effect of these two factors on the association between child poverty and maltreatment. In the Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) Study, a questionnaire was administered to all caregivers of first-grade children in every public elementary school in Adachi City between July and November 2015, and valid responses were used for analysis (N = 3944). From poverty to health: intraurban inequalities in child health indicators in low-income and middle-income countries during the SDG era.

INTRODUCTION: Urban areas are generally associated with better health outcomes. However, in many low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), rapid urbanisation has led to significant health disparities. These inequalities, especially those affecting the urban poor, are often overlooked in studies focused solely on rural-urban differences. This study aimed to assess the overall and country-specific intraurban inequalities in under-5 and neonatal mortality rates, immunisation coverage, care-seeking for acute respiratory infections (ARIs), coverage of diarrhoea treatment, and stunting, wastin

Feasibility of a randomised controlled trial of Healthier Wealthier Families in Sweden: results from the Ameliorating Child poverty through Connecting Economic Services with child health Services (ACCESS) pilot study.

Despite universal measures in Sweden, the proportion of children living in economic hardship is increasing. One strategy to mitigate hardship is integrating financial counselling within healthcare services. This paper describes a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the 'Healthier Wealthier Families' model in which child healthcare nurses screen parents of young children for economic hardship and refer those in need to free budget and debt counselling (BDC). The study was an internal pilot of a two-arm randomised waitlist-control trial with a one-to-one allocation. The intervention arm r
