Behavioral inhibition in children with learning disabilities.

Children with reading disabilities (RD, n=17), mathematical disabilities (MD, n=22), combined reading and mathematical disabilities (RD+MD, n=28) and control peers (n=45) were tested on behavioral inhibition with a Go/no-go task in a picture, letter and digit-modality. In contrast to children without RD, children with RD made significantly more commission errors on alphanumeric (letter and digit) modalities compared to the non-alphanumeric picture modality. As compared to children without MD, children with MD made as much commission errors on the picture modality as on the letter modality. No

[Multifamily therapy in children with learning disabilities].

Multifamily therapy is an evidence-based method used in the treatment and prevention of severe psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems and physical illnesses in children, adolescents and adults. For preventive family-oriented work with children with learning disorders there is a lack of therapeutic models. This article presents results from an innovative pilot project--multiple family groups for families with a learning disabled child of primary school age (six to eleven years old). Based on a systemic approach, this resource-oriented program integrates creative, activity-based intervention

Metaphoric competence in children with learning disabilities.

Metaphoric competence was examined in two groups of children with learning disabilities and one group of nondisabled peers ranging in age from 9-0 to 11-0 years. There were five girls and seven boys in each group. One group of students with learning disabilities had a history of spoken language impairment and the other group did not. Subjects were administered three verbal metaphor tasks (comprehension, preference, and completion) and a visual metaphor task, the Metaphor Triads Task (MTT). The three verbal metaphor tasks were administered in three contexts: (a) sentence, (b) story, and (c) sto

The use of assistive technologies among children with disabilities: the perception of parents of children with disabilities in Ghana.

PURPOSE: Assistive technologies (ATs) are fundamental to the successful educational and societal inclusion of all children with disabilities. In particular, the use of ATs has been found to increase levels of independence in daily living and promote greater access to learning opportunities for children with disabilities. However, the knowledge base and baseline information on the use of ATs is limited in developing countries such as Ghana. In this study, we sought to explore the experiences of parents regarding the use of ATs by their children with disabilities in Ghana. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Behavioral characteristics of children with Turner syndrome and children with learning disabilities.

Children with Turner syndrome (TS) are at increased risk for cognitive deficits and behavioural problems. Although cognitive skills are similar to those found in children with nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD), comparisons of behavioral patterns in children with TS to those in children with NLD have not been reported. The purpose of this research was to describe behavioral patterns in school-aged females with TS and to determine if these patterns differed from those exhibited by females with NLD as measured on the Pediatric Behavior Scale, a parental report of childhood behaviors. Victimization Among Children With Disabilities: A Meta-Analysis.

Children with disabilities are at heightened risk of violence, but existing meta-analyses rarely explore the impact of multiple disabilities and polyvictimization. This study updates global estimates and investigates how different disability types intersect with victimization risk. Databases of literature published on or before July 2024 were searched. Inclusion criteria required studies to (a) involve participants aged ≤18 years with professionally diagnosed disabilities, (b) report comparative data with non-disabled peers, and (c) present quantitative measures of victimization. A total of 44

Maltreatment of children with disabilities: the breaking point.

The maltreatment of children with disabilities is a serious public health issue. Children with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more likely to be abused or neglected than are their typically developing peers. When maltreated, they are more likely to be seriously injured or harmed. As alarming as these numbers are, they likely underestimate the problem. Children with disabilities encounter all 4 types of abuse: physical, sexual, neglect, and emotional. Here, the author discusses risk factors associated with the maltreatment of children with disabilities, which, as expected, include both child and

[Resilience and risk in children with learning disabilities].

AIM: To stress the desirability of considering the resilience approach as a complement to the risk approach in the study and intervention of children with learning disabilities (LD). DEVELOPMENT: Most of the research carried out into LD has used the correlational methodology, which has given rise to chance inferences being made and to considering them as being a risk factor for development in their own right. Yet, the findings from more recent longitudinal studies make it necessary to reconsider the inevitability of negative results in the development of children with LD and to identify the p

Psychological characteristics of mothers of children with disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological characteristics of mothers of children with disabilities. This study was performed under the hypotheses that, at the initial diagnosis of the children's disabilities, (1) the mothers suffered from serious psychological distress; (2) the more severe the child's disability was, the more serious the mother's psychological distress was; and that (3) the mother's psychological distress might be resolved within 8 weeks of rehabilitational interventions. The results were as follows: 1) mothers of children with disabilities showed signific

The school-aged siblings of children with disabilities.

A retrospective cohort study was performed of the school-aged siblings of children with severe learning difficulties. Index siblings demonstrated restricted contact with friends, behaviour difficulties, increased anxiety and increased acceptance towards disability compared with comparison siblings. Boys older than the disabled child demonstrated increased acceptance, whereas older girls demonstrated high rates of behaviour difficulty. Younger siblings demonstrated higher levels of anxiety, and those near in age demonstrated restricted contact with friends and behaviour difficulties. Those with

Learning disabilities in children with sex chromosome anomalies.

Studies of clinical populations have suggested that genetic factors may be involved in the etiology of learning disabilities. The present study included 44 children (ages 7-16) with sex chromosome anomalies (SCA) who were identified in a 10-year sex chromosome screening of all newborns in 2 large hospitals and thus represents an unbiased sample of children with a genetic etiology. 17 chromosomally normal siblings are included as controls. All subjects were given IQ and achievement tests, and extensive, repeated school histories were taken from parents and school personnel. Results demonstrate

Ascorbic acid status of children with developmental disabilities.

Ascorbic acid status of thirty-nine white children with developmental disabilities, ages three to nineteen years, is reported. Mean daily ascorbic acid intakes were calculated from three-day food records. Biochemical assessment consisted of fasting serum levels and a 6-hr. load test. Nine children served as a control group for the load test only. Mean dietary intakes for the vitamin were 204 per cent of the allowance. The mean serum ascorbic acid value was 1.3 mg. per deciliter. Only two children had levels at the unacceptable deficient level. Following load tests, ten children were identified

Ophthalmic health care needs of children with disabilities.

BACKGROUNDS: Although vision care is crucial for pediatric eye health, research on vision care utilization by children with disabilities remains limited. Furthermore, no study has investigated the variations among various disability types and the interaction between disability status and age. METHODS: All children with disabilities listed in the Taiwan National Disability Registry during the study period (2015-2019) were matched by age and sex at a 1:4 ratio with children without disabilities. Vision care needs were measured on the basis of (1) the number of outpatient ophthalmology visits, (

Deaf children with additional disabilities (AD+): CODEPEH recommendations.

Approximately 40% of children with deafness have an additional developmental disorder or major medical problem, which may delay the age of diagnosis of hearing loss and/or require intervention by other professionals. This situation is referred to as "deafness with added disability" (AD+). The reason why the population of hearing-impaired children is more likely to have associated added disabilities is that the risk factors for hearing impairment overlap with those for many other disabilities. These factors can influence various aspects of development, including language acquisition. It is impo
