Routine necropsies of 27 asymptomatic juvenile chinchillas revealed a high prevalence of gastric ulcers with microscopic lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis and typhlocolitis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis using Campylobacter genus-specific partial 16S rRNA primers revealed the presence of Campylobacter spp. DNA in the faeces of 12 of 27 animals (44.4%). In guinea-pig, the concentration of nitrogen and viable bacteria were nearly twice as high in the contents of the colonic furrow compared to the contents of the corresponding lumen. Labelled bacteria infused into the proximal colon of guinea-pigs were transported in the furrow into the caecum. Both species produced two types of pellets, one nitrogen-rich intended for caecotrophy, and one nitrogen-poor delivered as faecal pellets. The furrow is part of a separation mechanism in both species saving bacteria for the animals.

BACKGROUND: The domestic chinchilla has been descended from Chinchilla lanigera (long-tailed Chinchilla) or Chinchilla chinchilla (short-tailed Chinchilla). Both species of chinchilla are currently listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Giardia duodenalis is a common protozoan that colonizes and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. Eustachian tube function (ETF) was evaluated in 22 ears of 18 chinchillas using the inflation-deflation and forced-response protocols. This report describes for the first time the occurrence of alveolar echinococcosis in two exotic rodent species in Europe.
