Incidence of deformities and variation in shape of mentum and wing of Chironomus columbiensis (Diptera, Chironomidae) as tools to assess aquatic contamination.

Constantly, aquatic ecosystems are under pressure by complex mixtures of contaminants whose effects are not always easy to evaluate. Due to this, organisms are sought in which early warning signs may be detected upon the presence of potentially toxic xenobiotic substances. Thereby, the study evaluated the incidence of deformities and other morphometric variations in the mentum and wing of Chironomus columbiensis exposed to water from some of the Colombian Andes affected by mining, agriculture, and cattle raising. Populations of C. columbiensis were subjected throughout their life cycle (24 day

DNA Barcoding Reveals Hidden Genetic Diversity and Environmental Correlates of Lineage Differentiation in Neozavrelia Goetghebuer & Thienemann, 1941 (Diptera: Chironomidae).

Species delimitation and biodiversity assessment in Chironomidae are frequently hindered by morphological conservatism and widespread cryptic diversity. Neozavrelia (Diptera: Chironomidae), a genus inhabiting specialized freshwater microhabitats such as springs and hygropetric seepages, remains poorly understood with respect to its genetic diversity and the environmental processes underlying lineage differentiation. Clarifying lineage diversity is a prerequisite for evaluating the ecological factors associated with genetic differentiation. In this study, we compiled a global COI DNA barcode da

Effect of potassium dichromate and fenitrothion on hemoglobins of Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera, Chironomidae) larvae: potential biomarker of environmental monitoring.

In an attempt to identify Chironomus hemoglobins as biomarkers for environmental monitoring, alterations in the hemoglobins in Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae, exposed to potassium dichromate and fenitrothion, were investigated under laboratory conditions. The hemoglobins were evaluated in terms of their total contents by a cyanomethemoglobin procedure, individual components by electrophoresis of isoelectric focusing, and their oxidation by multi wavelength rapid-scanning spectrophotometry. The total hemoglobin contents increased at the high level of fenitrothion exposur

Specificity of attachment sites of larval water mites (Hydrachnidia, Acari) on their insect hosts (Chironomidae, Diptera)--evidence from some stream-living species.

This study concerns the parasite-host associations of water mite larvae and their chironomid hosts in a small stream on the North German Plain. The different feeding sites on the host were tested as to whether they represented a strategy of the parasites regarding host partitioning. The attachment sites of nine ectoparasitic water mite species were observed in detail: Aturus fontinalis, Atractides nodipalpis, Feltria rouxi, Hygrobates nigromaculatus, Protzia eximia, Sperchonopsis verrucosa, Sperchon clupeifer, S. setiger and Lebertia inaequalis. Aturus fontinalis, A. nodipalpis, F. rouxi and H

A novel leaf-rolling chironomid, Eukiefferiella endobryonia sp. nov. (Diptera, Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae), highlights the diversity of underwater chironomid tube structures.

The non-biting midges, Chironomidae (Diptera), are dominant components of most freshwater ecosystems. Many chironomids construct tubes or cases as larvae out of various materials bound together with silk. The structures of tubes show a wide range of variation, and some are morphologically comparable to those of caddisflies. Herein a new species is described, Eukiefferiella endobryonia sp. nov., which exhibits a very unusual behavior in which it constructs tubes from aquatic mosses. This species' fourth-instar larvae construct their cases exclusively from the leaves of Fontinalis mosses (Hypnal

Morphological and molecular characterization of a new microsporidium, Janacekia tainanus n. sp. from the adipose tissue of Kiefferulus tainanus (Diptera: Chironomidae) in China.

We reported a new microsporidium Janacekia tainanus n. sp. from the adipose tissue of the midge Kiefferulus tainanus Kieffer, 1912 collected from a eutrophic pond in Daye city, Hubei Province, China. Infected chironomid larvae with hypertrophied adipose tissue exhibited porcelain-white. All developmental stages possessed large nuclei. The earliest stages observed were diplokaryotic meronts which were in direct contact with the host adipocyte cytoplasm. Diplokaryotic meronts developed into sporonts with the deposition of electron-dense coagulum on their surface. Multinucleate sporogonial plasmo

First report of a major management target species, chironomid Paratanytarsus grimmii (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae, in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in South Korea.

Ensuring the supply of safe and high-quality drinking water can be compromised by the presence of chironomid larvae in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), which may contaminate municipal water systems through freshwater resources. Chironomids are dominant species known for their resilience to a broad range of extreme aquatic environments. This study aimed to identify the morphological characteristics and obtain genetic information of the chironomid Paratanytarsus grimmii found in the water intake source and freshwater resource of DWTPs in Korea, highlighting the potential possibility of a

Effects of Lumbriculus variegatus (Annelida, Oligochaete) bioturbation on zinc sediment chemistry and toxicity to the epi-benthic invertebrate Chironomus tepperi (Diptera: Chironomidae).

Classical laboratory-based single-species sediment bioassays do not account for modifications to toxicity from bioturbation by benthic organisms which may impact predictions of contaminated sediment risk to biota in the field. This study aims to determine the effects of bioturbation on the toxicity of zinc measured in a standard laboratory bioassay conducted with chironomid larvae (Chironomus tepperi). The epi-benthic chironomid larvae were exposed to two different levels of sediment contamination (1600 and 1980 mg/kg of dry weight zinc) in the presence or absence of annelid worms (Lumbriculus

Larval morphology of Belgica antarctica Jacobs, 1900 (Diptera, Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) from central part of the maritime Antarctic and deformities found in the larvae.

The larval morphology of the endemic species Belgica antarctica Jacobs, collected in January and February (2022) from six sites of Antarctica, was studied. The mouth apparatus and the parapods of one hundred seventy-six larvae were analyzed. No differences were found in the morphology of these structures between individuals of different sites. However, differences (with the exception of the length of 2nd antennal segment) were estimated in the sizes of the morphological features, as 2023 measurements were made of fifteen kinds of these structures and larval body. Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and spinosad on adult emergence of the non-biting midges Polypedilum nubifer (Skuse) and Tanytarsus curticornis Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae) in coastal wetlands.

To optimize their efficacy, some insecticides used for mosquito control are introduced into aquatic ecosystems where mosquito larvae develop (marshes, ponds, sanitation devices) and cannot escape from the treated water. However, this raises the question of possible effects of mosquito larvicides on non-target aquatic species. Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti), which is well-known for its selectivity for Nematocera dipterans, is widely used for mosquito control all over the world. Spinosad, a mixture of spinosyns A and D known as fermentation products of a soil actinomycete (Sacchar

Altitudinal patterns of Diptera richness and density in streams: a scientometric approach.

Environmental changes along altitudinal gradients strongly influence the distribution of aquatic insects. We conducted a scientometric review to assess the impact of altitude on Diptera communities, with a particular focus on Chironomidae and Simuliidae. Articles published until 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO using multilingual (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) search strings combining insect groups (Diptera, Chironomidae, or Simuliidae), altitudinal terms (altitude or elevation), and freshwater habitat descriptors (river, stream, lotic, or freshwater). Trace metal levels in chironomid larvae and sediments from a Bolivian river: impact of mining activities.

The effect of mining activity on metal accumulation in sediments and Chironomidae in a river in Bolivia was assessed. Surficial sediments and midge larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera) were collected at five sampling sites. Concentrations of the trace metals Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn were measured in organisms and sediments by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Sediments were subjected to two different extraction procedures to identify total trace metals and reducible trace metals. Geochemical characteristics of the sediment were analyzed: total organic carbon (TOC), Fe and Mn

[Immediate reaction in native tests with red chironomid larvae].

Growing numbers of pet animals in households go along with increasing sensitisation hazards by various, partially highly aggressive allergens. Even running an aquarium can be risky for atopic humans, if the fishes are fed chironomid larvae. This is illustrated by a case of inhalation allergy in a patient who showed severe reactions to skin testing with native chironomidae.

Cross-ecosystem transfer of microplastics via emergent aquatic insects to riparian spiders in a municipal wastewater-impacted system.

Microplastics (plastic particles ≤5 mm) are a persistent and widespread pollutant in aquatic ecosystems, where they can accumulate in the larvae of aquatic insects inhabiting benthic habitats. Aquatic insects cross aquatic-terrestrial boundaries through metamorphosis, yet few studies have investigated their role in transporting microplastics to terrestrial ecosystems as emergent adults. This study sampled upstream and downstream of eight municipal wastewater treatment plants in the Grand River watershed, Ontario, Canada, in 2022 and 2023 to assess whether these facilities increase microplastic

Metal accumulation in riverine macroinvertebrates from a platinum mining region.

South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. The Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa contains 75% of the world's Pt resources. Mining of this precious metal requires large volumes of water for production and removal of waste products. Most of this wastewater is discharged into river systems. Although the source of contamination with Pt in aquatic systems due to mining activities is known, little to no information is available about the impact of Pt on aquatic organisms. Additionally, other metals are released as byproducts of Pt mining, which might also be discharged into the environm
