Galactosylated chitosan/DNA nanoparticles prepared using water-soluble chitosan as a gene carrier.

Water-soluble chitosan (WSC) was used to increase the stability of chitosan in water and decrease the cytotoxicity induced by acetic acid. Lactobionic acid (LA) bearing galactose group was coupled with WSC for hepatocytes specificity. The composition of galactose in galactosylated chitosan (GC) was determined by NMR spectroscopy. The GC was complexed with plasmid DNA in various GC/DNA (N/P) charge ratios and the resulting complex was characterized by dynamic light scattering, gel retardation, and turbidity to determine the particle sizes, complex formation, and complex stability, respectively.

Transport mechanism of chitosan-N-acetylcysteine, chitosan oligosaccharides or carboxymethyl chitosan decorated coumarin-6 loaded nanostructured lipid carriers across the rabbit ocular.

To facilitate the hydrophobic drugs modeled by coumarin-6 (Cou-6) acrossing the cornea to the anterior chamber of the rabbit eye, chitosan (CS) derivatives including chitosan-N-acetyl-l-cysteine (CS-NAC), chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) modified nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were designed and characterized. We found that, with similar size distribution and positivecharges, different CS derivatives based on NLCs led to distinctive delivery performance. In vivo precorneal retention study on rabbits revealed that these CS derivatives coating exhibited a st

Development and evaluation of chitosan and chitosan derivative nanoparticles containing insulin for oral administration.

Chitosan and chitosan derivative-based nanoparticles loaded with insulin were prepared by self-assembly, via electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged drug and the positively charged polymers. In the investigated chitosan derivatives, the amine groups were substituted to different extents (33, 52 or 99%) by 2-hydroxypropyl-3-trimethyl ammonium groups, rendering the polymers permanently positively charged, irrespective of the pH. This is an important property for this type of advanced drug delivery system, since the pH value changes throughout the gastrointestinal tract and elec

[Properties of chitosan and sorption of copper ions from a copper sulfate solution on chitosan].

The introduction of the paper briefly describes the properties of chitosan and the current utilization of the aminopolysaccharides chitosan, chitin, and their derivatives in pharmaceutical formulations, and in the health services also as sorbents of heavy metals and other substances. The degree of deacetylation (64%) of commercially produced chitosan was estimated from measured IR spectra, and spectrophotometry in the visible region was employed to study the kinetics and equilibrium of the Cu(II) ion sorption from CuSO4 aqueous solutions. Cu(II) sorption on the suspended chitosan was rather sl

Dielectric Characterization of Protonated Chitosan-Lignin Biocomposite Membranes: Influence of Chitosan and Lignin Types.

Biobased chitosan-lignin composite membranes with tailored dielectric and conductive properties were developed using chitosan of high (CSH) and low (CSL) molecular weight and degree of deacetylation, combined with kraft (KL) and organosolv lignin (OL) as fillers. The membranes were protonated by immersion in 1.0 M sulfuric acid. CSH composites exhibit stronger ionic interactions with sulfate groups compared to CSL composites, resulting in a dense structure that hinders water absorption and increases fragility. Chitosan interactions with sulfuric acid and lignin restrict the mobility of dielect

Adsorption studies of Cu(II) onto biopolymer chitosan and its nanocomposite 5%bentonite/chitosan.

Chitosan (CS) and nanocomposite 5%bentonite/chitosan (5%Bt/CS) prepared from the natural biopolymer CS were tested to remove Cu(II) ions using a batch adsorption experiment at various temperatures (25, 35 and 45°C). X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA) were used in CS and the nanocomposite characterisation. This confirmed the exfoliation of bentonite (Bt) to form the nanocomposite. The adsorption kinetics of copper on both solids was found to follow a pseudo-second-order law at each studied temperatur

Electrospun nanofiber membranes for rapid liver hemostasis via N-alkylated chitosan doped chitosan/PEO.

The ideal hemostatic agents should be able to stop bleeding quickly and avoid secondary bleeding caused by adhesion with blood clots during dressing change. Herein, a hydrophobic electrospun nanofiber membrane was prepared for achieving hemostasis, rationally targeting both attributes, via doping N-alkylated chitosan (N-CS) grafted with octadecyl into chitosan/polyethylene oxide (PEO). In vitro and in vivo coagulation tests showed that CPNs doped with small amounts of N-CS (CPN31) could significantly shorten hemostasis time and promote the formation of more stable and stronger blood clots. In vitro and in vivo effects of chitosan-praziquantel and chitosan-albendazole nanoparticles on Echinococcus granulosus Metacestodes.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), which is caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus, is one of the most important zoonoses affecting humans. Benzimidazoles (in particular albendazole) and praziquantel (PZQ) are effective against CE, but poor water solubility of these agents often leads to inadequate results. Here, we evaluate the effects of chitosan-albendazole (ChABZ) and chitosan-praziquantel (ChPZQ) nanoparticles as a new formulation on hydatid cysts both in vitro and in vivo. Developed microcysts in culture were treated with different concentrations of ChABZ and ChPZQ nanoparticles (

Incorporation of chitosan microspheres into collagen-chitosan scaffolds for the controlled release of nerve growth factor.

BACKGROUND: Artifical nerve scaffold can be used as a promising alternative to autologous nerve grafts to enhance the repair of peripheral nerve defects. However, current nerve scaffolds lack efficient microstructure and neurotrophic support. METHODS: Microsphere-Scaffold composite was developed by incorporating chitosan microspheres loaded with nerve growth factor (NGF-CMSs) into collagen-chitosan scaffolds (CCH) with longitudinally oriented microchannels (NGF-CMSs/CCH). The morphological characterizations, in vitro release kinetics study, neurite outgrowth assay, and bioactivity assay were

Fire Resistant Adhesive from Chitosan.

Chitosan is one of the most abundant biopolymers on earth. It is used as a nontoxic alternative in a wide range of medicines, packaging, adhesives, and flame retardants. Chitosan is poorly soluble in neutral or alkaline solutions, but it dissolves in solutions of weak acids, such as acetic acid or citric acid, both of which occur naturally. As a replacement for formaldehyde-containing resins in engineered wood, a chitosan-acid mixture acts as a low-cost, nontoxic adhesive for natural wood that also offers fire protection by forming a char barrier. Pentaerythritol was studied as an additive due

Transparent, Aldehyde-Free Chitosan Aerogel.

Aldehyde-free, transparent chitosan aerogel is reported. The aerogel was prepared by thermal decomposition of urea to induce gelation of a chitosan solution, followed by solvent exchange to ethanol, and supercritical drying. Low urea concentrations (≤ 25 g L-1) result in transparent and highly mesoporous aerogels, while higher urea concentrations (≥ 30 g L-1) produce opaque, more macroporous aerogels. The high surface areas of > 400 m2 g-1, large mesopore volumes up to 3.5 cm3 g-1, and optical transparency of the low-urea aerogels indicate a high structural homogeneity at the mesoscale, and th

Coating cortical bone allografts with periosteum-mimetic scaffolds made of chitosan, trimethyl chitosan, and heparin.

Bone allografts have very limited healing leading to high rates of failure from non-union, fracture, and infection. The limited healing of bone allografts is due in large part to devitalization and removal of the periosteum, which removes osteogenic cells and osteoinductive signals. Here we report techniques for directly coating cortical bone with tissue scaffolds, and evaluate the scaffolds' capacity to support osteoprogenitor cells. Three types of coatings are investigated: N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan-heparin polyelectrolyte multilayers, freeze-dried porous chitosan foam coatings, and electrosp
