Chlamydophila psittaci infections in humans during an outbreak of psittacosis from poultry in Germany.

In 2005, an outbreak of severe respiratory disease in a mixed poultry flock that was infected with Chlamydophila (C.) psittaci led to dissemination of the infection to at least 100 small poultry farms in 11 districts of Central Germany. At the same time, a total of 24 persons in contact with poultry from one of the flocks reported flu-like symptoms to their physician, thus suggesting zoonotic transmission. Within 3 weeks, seven individuals had to be hospitalized, with three of them requiring intensive care. Analysis of ompA sequences from chlamydial isolates and directly from clinical samples

Kinetics of infection and effects on the placenta of Chlamydophila abortus in experimentally infected pregnant ewes.

A Chlamydophila abortus-induced abortion model was carried out on the basis of the experimental infection of ewes at day 75 of gestation. The infection induced abortions and the birth of weak lambs during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. To study the kinetics of the infection in the placenta and in other organs, infected ewes were killed at 105, 120, and 130 days of gestation and also several days after abortion or parturition. Infected ewes developed a systemic infection that caused a mild and transient pneumonia and focal hepatitis. Pathologic changes were observed in placentas at 120 day of g

Chlamydophila felis in cats--are the stray cats dangerous source of infection?

Chlamydophila felis is a causative agent of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, and pneumonia in cats. Natural transmission mostly occurs consequently to close contact with other infected cats, their aerosol and fomites. We have examined 93 cats with symptoms of acute or chronic conjunctivitis, from Košice region in Slovakia, during the period of 2 years. Conjunctival samples were obtained from 55 domestic cats (59.14%) and 38 stray cats (40.86%). Of the total number of 93 examined animals, 42 cats were positive, which represents 45.16% overall positivity. Out of the 42 positive cats, 25 cats wer

Mixed infection with reovirus and Chlamydophila in a flock of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Eleven budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) from a zoological collection presented at necropsy with emaciation and splenomegaly or hepatomegaly or both. Polymerase chain reaction assays performed on liver and spleen samples were positive for Chlamydophila psittaci in 2 of 3 birds tested, and histologic findings in 2 additional birds were compatible with chlamydiosis. The aviary was subsequently closed to the public, and a 45-day treatment regimen with doxycycline in the seeds was initiated. No further deaths of birds with hepatomegaly or splenomegaly were observed after the first day of treat

Evidence of Chlamydophila psittaci infection in captive Amazon parrots in Brazil.

The prevalence of Chlamydophila psittaci (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) infection was assessed in 95 apparently healthy, captive Amazon parrots from three breeder collections in southeastern and west-central Brazil. Cloacal swabs from 95 birds were tested for chlamydial antigen, which was detected by direct immunofluorescence (DIF), and serum samples from 44 of these birds were tested for antibodies to C. psittaci using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The prevalences of active infection as detected by DIF were 16.7%, 22.2%, and 56.1%, and seroprevalences were 100%, 87.5%, and 60% in flock

A casuistic immunologic response in primary and repeated Chlamydophila pneumoniae infections in an immunocompetent individual.

A casuistic immunologic response in primary and repeated Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is described. The primary C pneumoniae infection was documented as laboratory accident in late 1990. The immunologic response was mediated mainly through production of IgM antibodies with only a marginal IgG and IgA increase near the cut-off value. The second episode of respiratory illness in the summer of 1999 that was clinically compatible with acute C. pneumoniae infection was characterised by only increase of specific IgM antibodies detected by microimmunofluorescence, EIA and Western blot analysis.

Acute haemorrhagic pericarditis: an unusual presentation of Chlamydophila pneumoniae pneumonia infection.

, a common cause of respiratory tract infections, rarely leads to serious conditions. A 13-year-old boy with serologically confirmed C. pneumoniae infection presented with pneumonia complicated by pericardial and bilateral pleural effusions. He had a large haemorrhagic pericardial effusion from which 1000 ml of fluid was aspirated over 10 days and a right haemorrhagic pleural effusion which required a chest drain and the removal of 700 ml over 5 days. The addition of clarithromycin to ceftriaxone appeared to enhance recovery. As far as we are aware, this is the first report in the English lite

[Respiratory-Mucous Syndrome Secondary to Chlamydophila pneumoniae Infection: A Case Report].

Mucocutaneous diseases associated with systemic symptoms are varied. Since 2014, mucocutaneous syndromes, associated with atypical bacterial infections, have been described as specific entities. Most of them by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and up to 10 percent by Chlamydophila pneumoniae. Differential diagnosis is important because it has clinical implications. We present the case of a 24-year-old patient with extensive mucosal and respiratory compromise, compatible with mucosal respiratory syndrome due to Chlamydophila pneumoniae. Initially managed with NSAIDs, which made it difficult to differentia

Evaluation of a Chlamydophila psittaci infection diagnostic platform for zoonotic risk assessment.

Reports on zoonotic transmission of Chlamydophila psittaci originating from poultry are incidentally published. During recent studies in European turkeys we isolated C. psittaci genotypes A, B, D, E, F, and E/B, all considered potentially dangerous for humans. This encouraged us to analyze the zoonotic risk on a Belgian turkey farm, from production onset until slaughter, using a Chlamydophila psittaci diagnostic platform. Twenty individually marked hens, as well as the farmer and two scientists, were monitored medically. Bioaerosol monitoring, serology, isolation, and nested PCR demonstrated c

Erythema nodosum caused by ascariasis and Chlamydophila pneumoniae pulmonary infection--a case report.

Erythema nodosum belongs to a group of relatively common hypodermal inflammations. It occurs mainly among women, particularly young women. The etiology of the disease is not clear. Most frequently, changes appear on the surface of the frontal part of the shins. Initially, red nodules change in color to dark brown and then to yellow and green. There is neither dissolution nor cicatrization of the exanthema. Regression is frequent. We present a case of erythema nodosum caused by Ascaris lumbricoides infection as well as by an early Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection, whose etiology has rarely be

Transcriptional response patterns of Chlamydophila psittaci in different in vitro models of persistent infection.

The obligatory intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila psittaci is the causative agent of psittacosis in birds and humans. The capability of this zoonotic pathogen to develop a persistent phase is likely to play a role in chronicity of infections, as well as in failure of antibiotic therapy and immunoprophylaxis. To elucidate three different in vitro models for transition of C. psittaci to persistence (iron depletion, penicillin G treatment, and gamma interferon [IFN-gamma] exposure), a set of 27 genes was examined by mRNA expression analysis using quantitative real-time PCR. While the phenotypi

Outbreak of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection in long-term care facilities and an affiliated hospital.

This paper reports an outbreak of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection in long-term care facilities and an affiliated hospital. The outbreak involved rapid spread of infection, and was inconsistent with several outbreaks experienced among younger populations. In addition, there were differences in the incidences among facilities and the affiliated hospital in relation to mean age. Our findings indicate that it is possible that elderly residents may be more susceptible to acquiring this infection. Physicians and other health care providers in long-term care facilities should consider C. pneumonia

Genome-wide analysis of Chlamydophila pneumoniae gene expression at the late stage of infection.

Chlamydophila pneumoniae, an obligate intracellular eubacterium, changes its form from a vegetative reticulate body into an infectious elementary body during the late stage of its infection cycle. Comprehension of the molecular events in the morphological change is important to understand the switching mechanism between acute and chronic infection, which is deemed to relate to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Herein, we have attempted to screen genes expressed in the late stage with a genome-wide DNA microarray, resulting in nomination of 17 genes as the late-stage genes. Fourteen of the 1

Herpes Labialis, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, and Cytomegalovirus Infections and Risk of Dementia: The Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: An association between chronic infectious diseases and development of dementia has been suspected for decades, based on the finding of pathogens in postmortem brain tissue and on serological evidence. However, questions remain regarding confounders, reverse causality, and how accurate, reproducible and generalizable those findings are. OBJECTIVE: Investigate whether exposure to Herpes simplex (manifested as herpes labialis), Chlamydophila pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) modifies the risk of dementia in a populational cohort.

Differential expression of chlamydial signal transduction genes in normal and interferon gamma-induced persistent Chlamydophila pneumoniae infections.

Characteristic features of the persistent chlamydial developmental cycle, associated with chronic infections in both humans and animals, include the generation of non-replicative, morphologically aberrant bodies which are distinct from normal propagating reticulate bodies. Previous studies have correlated these morphological and metabolic changes with differential expression of diverse functional subsets of chlamydial genes. To further investigate these correlations, we compared mRNA expression of predicted chlamydial signal transduction genes between normal Chlamydophila pneumoniae A-03 infec
