Chlamydophila psittaci pneumonia followed by lower gastrointestinal ischemic necrosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Psittacosis, also known as parrot fever, is an uncommon infectious disease caused by Chlamydophila psittaci (C. psittaci). While C. psittaci infections are usually not life-threatening, the pathogenesis and associated complications are not yet fully understood. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old male was hospitalized due to a cough, accompanied by expectoration and dyspnea. After admission, the patient's breathing rapidly deteriorated, and despite the use of a ventilator, it was challenging to maintain respiratory function. While initiating extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) …

Molecular and genomic aberrations in Chlamydophila psittaci negative ocular adnexal marginal zone lymphomas.

The etiology and pathogenesis of ocular adnexal extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (OAEMZL) are still unknown and the association with Chlamydophila psittaci (C. psittaci) has been shown in only some geographic regions. Herein, we comprehensively examined the frequency of chromosomal translocations as well as CARD11, MYD88 (L265P), and A20 mutations/deletions in 45 C. psittaci negative OAEMZLs. t(14;18)(q32;q21) IGH-MALT1 and t(11;18)(q21;q21) API2-MALT1 were not detected in any of the analyzed tumors while three tumors harbored IGH translocations to an unidentified partner. CARD11 mutations we…

Genotyping of Chlamydophila psittaci by real-time PCR and high-resolution melt analysis.

Human infection with Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) psittaci can lead to psittacosis, a disease that occasionally results in severe pneumonia and other medical complications. C. psittaci is currently grouped into seven avian genotypes: A through F and E/B. Serological testing, outer membrane protein A (ompA) gene sequencing, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis are currently used for distinguishing these genotypes. Although accurate, these methods are time-consuming and require multiple confirmatory tests. By targeting the ompA gene, a real-time PCR assay has been developed to rapi

Chlamydophila psittaci infections in humans during an outbreak of psittacosis from poultry in Germany.

In 2005, an outbreak of severe respiratory disease in a mixed poultry flock that was infected with Chlamydophila (C.) psittaci led to dissemination of the infection to at least 100 small poultry farms in 11 districts of Central Germany. At the same time, a total of 24 persons in contact with poultry from one of the flocks reported flu-like symptoms to their physician, thus suggesting zoonotic transmission. Within 3 weeks, seven individuals had to be hospitalized, with three of them requiring intensive care. Analysis of ompA sequences from chlamydial isolates and directly from clinical samples

Transcriptional response patterns of Chlamydophila psittaci in different in vitro models of persistent infection.

The obligatory intracellular bacterium Chlamydophila psittaci is the causative agent of psittacosis in birds and humans. The capability of this zoonotic pathogen to develop a persistent phase is likely to play a role in chronicity of infections, as well as in failure of antibiotic therapy and immunoprophylaxis. To elucidate three different in vitro models for transition of C. psittaci to persistence (iron depletion, penicillin G treatment, and gamma interferon [IFN-gamma] exposure), a set of 27 genes was examined by mRNA expression analysis using quantitative real-time PCR. While the phenotypi…

Zoonotic atypical pneumonia due to Chlamydophila psittaci: first reported psittacosis case in Taiwan.

Human psittacosis caused by Chlamydophila psittaci is one of the most common zoonotic atypical pneumonias featuring pulmonary as well as extrapulmonary infections. Most of the cases involve avian contact history especially with psittacine birds. Herein we report a 44-year-old male patient displaying atypical pneumonia symptoms of intermittent fever, dry cough, chest pain, dyspnea, headache, hepatitis, and hyponatremia. He had two sick cockatiels, one of which had died a month previously. A microimmunofluorescence test was performed to check the serum antibody levels against Chlamydophila psitt…

Central nervous system marginal zone B-cell lymphoma associated with Chlamydophila psittaci infection.

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas are linked to bacterial infections that vary according to the anatomical site. The occurrence of these lymphomas in the central nervous system is a very rare event, and the identification of specific bacteria in this setting has not been previously addressed. Herein, we report for the first time a case of primary central nervous system marginal zone B-cell lymphoma involving the choroid plexus associated with Chlamydophila psittaci infection. No concomitant ocular involvement was detected. C psittaci was identified with 3 independent methods, and throu…

Diff-Quik cytologic recognition of Chlamydophila psittaci in orolabial lesions of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydophila psittaci causes psittacosis, an ornithosis acquired usually from infected birds. The disease is often focal and pneumonic but on rare instances can be protean and fatal. Diagnosis is by Chlamydophila serology, which may take as long as 21 days or more. The recovery of the organisms from mice, eggs or tissue culture inoculated with the patient's blood or sputum is tedious and dangerous for laboratory personnel. On occasion, C psittaci inclusion bodies have also been detected in infected cells by fluorescent antibody, Giemsa or Gimenez staining. This report describes he…

Key role of Chlamydophila psittaci on Belgian turkey farms in association with other respiratory pathogens.

Two hundred turkey sera from eight Belgian and two French farms were tested for the presence of antibodies against avian pneumovirus (APV), Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT), Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma meleagridis and Chlamydophila psittaci. At slaughter, C. psittaci, APV and ORT antibodies were detected in 94, 34 and 6.5% of the turkeys, respectively. No antibodies against M. gallisepticum or M. meleagridis were present. Additionally, turkeys on three Belgian farms were examined from production onset until slaughter using both serology and antigen or gene detection. All farms ex…

Chlamydophila psittaci-negative ocular adnexal marginal zone lymphomas express self polyreactive B-cell receptors.

The pathogenesis of Chlamydophila psittaci-negative ocular adnexal extranodal marginal zone lymphomas (OAEMZLs) is poorly understood. OAEMZLs are monoclonal tumors expressing a biased repertoire of mutated surface immunoglobulins. Antigenic activation of the B-cell receptor (BCR) may have a role in the pathogenesis of these lymphomas. We have analyzed the reactivity of recombinant OAEMZL immunoglobulins. OAEMZL antibodies reacted with self-human antigens, as demonstrated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, HEp-2 immunofluorescence and human protein microarrays. All the analyzed recombinant …

High prevalence of chlamydial (Chlamydophila psittaci) infection in fetal membranes of aborted equine fetuses.

Seventy-seven cases of equine abortion from 49 Hungarian farms that occurred between 1998 and 2000 were investigated for the presence of chlamydiae by immunohistochemistry, PCR and/or MZN staining. Evidence of the presence of these bacteria was obtained in 64 cases (83.1%) from 41 (83.7%) different farms. Partial ompA gene sequencing of PCR products revealed that the agent was Chlamydophila psittaci. Based on the findings of microbial diagnosis, pathology and case history, chlamydial infection was considered to be the most likely cause of abortion in at least 11 (14.3%) cases. In the remaining…

Variable association between Chlamydophila psittaci infection and ocular adnexal lymphomas: methodological biases or true geographical variations?

Since the first publication in 2004, a large number of reports have raised the question of an association between ocular adnexal lymphoma and Chlamydia psittaci. The results of this scientific debate, however, remain controversial. The primary objective of this paper was therefore to raise important questions concerning the interpretation of the different and heterogeneous data on the association between Chlamydophila psittaci and ocular adnexal lymphoma, namely the impact of the methodology used and the epidemiological variability of seroprevalence of C. psittaci antibodies. This paper also p…
