Artificial Chlorella Biohybrids for Alleviation of Cartilage Degeneration in Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA), one of the most common chronic joint diseases, is characterised by cartilage imbalance and disruption of the cartilage extracellular matrix. In this study, we observed impaired mitophagy and glucose metabolism disorders in OA chondrocytes, which exacerbated cartilage degeneration. And we unveil Chlorella, a natural microorganism that appeared more than two billion years ago, as an efficient regulator of both mitophagy and glucose metabolism in OA chondrocytes. Chlorella activates mitophagy and rescues mitochondrial function. More importantly, Chlorella inhibits glycolysis

Fatty Acid Content and Composition of Triacylglycerols of Chlorella kessleri.

Triacylglycerols (TAGs) are esters formed from one glycerol and three fatty acids. TAGs are induced to accumulate in algal cells under environmental stress conditions including nutrient-limitation, hyperosmosis, and low temperature, for the storage of metabolic energy and carbon, and also for the consumption of excess energy (e.g., Hirai et al., 2016 ; Hayashi et al., 2017 ). Beside their physiological significance, the commercial utilization of algal TAG has been expected for the production of biodiesel, the methyl esters of fatty acids, from the aspect of carbon-neutral conception. The amoun

The bioconcentration and degradation of nonylphenol and nonylphenol polyethoxylates by Chlorella vulgaris.

Nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPnEOs), a major class of nonionic surfactants, can easily enter into aquatic environments through various pathways due to their wide applications, which leads to the extensive existence of their relative stable metabolites, namely nonylphenol (NP) and mono- to tri-ethoxylates. This study investigated the bioconcentration and degradation of NP and NPnEO oligomers (n = 1-12) by a green algae, Chlorella vulgaris. Experimental results showed that C. vulgaris can remove NP from water phase efficiently, and bioconcentration and degradation accounted for approximately ha

Chlorella suppresses methylmercury transfer to the fetus in pregnant mice.

To investigate the effects of chlorella on methylmercury (MeHg) transfer to the fetus during pregnancy, female C57BL/6N mice (aged 10 weeks) were housed for 7 to 8 weeks, from 4 weeks before mating to birth, with diets containing 0% or 10% chlorella powder (CP) and MeHg-containing drinking water (2 µg Hg/ml). The consumption volume of the MeHg-containing water was limited to 15 ml/mouse/week throughout the experiment. Distilled water and a basal diet (0% CP) was given to control mice. Except for the mating period, during the 5(th) week, mice were housed individually until parturition. Two neon

Effects of SO2 and NO on growth of Chlorella sp. KR-1.

Effects of the toxic compounds in flue gas, SOx and NOx, on growth of Chlorella sp. KR-1 have been determined. Although growth of KR-1 was suppressed by the toxic compounds, KR-1 exhibited excellent tolerances to SOx compared to other algal strains. When Chlorella KR-1 was cultured with the model gas containing 60 ppm SO2, the linear growth rate was 1.24 g/l day which is about 25% lower than that of the control culture aerated with the gas mixture containing no toxic compounds, SO2 and NO. KR-1 could grow even with the model gas containing 100 ppm SO2 and the linear growth rate of KR-1 in the

Biotoxicity of mercury to Chlorella vulgaris as influenced by amino acids.

The toxicity of mercury ion, on Chlorella vulgaris, is largely influenced by amino acids. Five amino acids, namely alanine, asparagine, glutamic acid, cysteine and histidine, were added separately to the medium containing static dose of mercury. Survival (%) of the alga was reduced with the increasing concentrations of mercury. Of these five amino acids, cysteine was found to be the most effective while alanine and glutamic acid were the least effective on reducing the toxic effect of mercury on the alga measured in terms of growth, chlorophyll and protein content. The order of detoxification

Nutrient removal capacity of Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella sorokiniana and Haematococcus pluvialis from wastewater at high temperature, and changes in biochemical composition of algal biomass.

This research focused on applying three microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella sorokiniana, and local strain Haematococcus pluvialis for wastewater remediation at high temperature, assessing their efficiency in reducing nitrogen (NH4+ and NO3-), phosphorus (PO4-3) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD). The growth rates, proximate and fatty acid (FA) compositions of microalgae were also investigated. Initially, microalgae were cultured in BG-11 medium in 250-mL Erlenmeyer's for 10 days, then scaled up to 1-L Erlenmeyer's for another 10 days, and finally to 5-L plastic vessels for another 1

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-Mediated Genetic Engineering of Green Microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation (AMT) serves as a widely employed tool for manipulating plant genomes. However, A. tumefaciens exhibit the capacity for gene transfer to a diverse array of species. Numerous microalgae species lack well-established methods for reliably integrating genes of interest into their nuclear genome. To harness the potential benefits of microalgal biotechnology, simple and efficient genome manipulation tools are crucial. Herein, an optimized AMT protocol is presented for the industrial microalgae species Chlorella vulgaris, utilizing the reporter green

Ammonium reduces chromium toxicity in the freshwater alga Chlorella vulgaris.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of ammonium (NH4 (+)) on Cr toxicity to the freshwater alga Chlorella vulgaris. We followed an array of cellular functions and biomolecules in C. vulgaris cells exposed to 50 or 100 μM Cr at three different initial NH4 (+) concentrations (0.5, 3, and 10 mM). The results showed that Cr strongly inhibited cell yield of C. vulgaris, but 10 mM NH4 (+) could decrease by more than two-fold Cr toxicity on cell yield compared to exposure to 0.5 mM NH4 (+). Cr toxicity on gene transcripts and cellular substructure was also much lower

Chlorella viruses contain genes encoding a complete polyamine biosynthetic pathway.

Two genes encoding the putative polyamine biosynthetic enzymes agmatine iminohydrolase (AIH) and N-carbamoylputrescine amidohydrolase (CPA) were cloned from the chloroviruses PBCV-1, NY-2A and MT325. They were expressed in Escherichia coli to form C-terminal (His)6-tagged proteins and the recombinant proteins were purified by Ni2+-binding affinity chromatography. The biochemical properties of the two enzymes are similar to AIH and CPA enzymes from Arabidopsis thaliana and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Together with the previously known virus genes encoding ornithine/arginine decarboxlyase (ODC/ADC)

Harnessing Chlorella vulgaris-derived extracellular vesicles for potentiated cancer immunotherapy.

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising drug delivery vehicle due to their inherent biocompatibility, high stability and large-scale production. Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) has been increasing application in the food industry and biomedical fields. Nevertheless, the biogenesis and immunomodulatory functions of EVs from Chlorella species remain poorly understood. Herein, we found that the EVs in C. vulgaris originated from "vacuolar structures", a process analogous to the biogenesis of exosomes which originates from endosomes in mammalian cells. Therefore, we f

Mechanisms of detoxification of high copper concentrations by the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana.

Microalgae have evolved mechanisms to respond to changes in copper ion availability, which are very important for normal cellular function, to tolerate metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems, and for modulation of copper bioavailability and toxicity to other organisms. Knowledge and application of these mechanisms will benefit the use of microalgae in wastewater processing and biomass production, and the use of copper compounds in the suppression of harmful algal blooms. Here, using electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic r

Chlorella vulgaris as a Livestock Supplement and Animal Feed: A Comprehensive Review.

This review explores the potential of Chlorella vulgaris (CLV) as an alternative supplement in animal feed. CLV is rich in essential nutrients including fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, as well as bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, which contribute to its health-promoting properties. The nutritional composition of CLV can vary depending on factors such as cultivation methods, nutrient availability, light intensity, temperature, water pH, strain, and processing techniques. The rigid cell wall of the microalga limits nutrient accessibility, particularly in monogastric ani

Spirulina and Chlorella Dietary Supplements-Are They a Source Solely of Valuable Nutrients?

Spirulina and Chlorella are nutrient-rich microalgae widely consumed as dietary supplements; however, their high biosorption capacity raises concerns regarding the accumulation of environmental contaminants. This study analyzed 52 commercially available Spirulina and Chlorella products (29 conventional, 23 organic) to assess the co-occurrence of heavy metals and pharmaceutical residues, as these two classes of contaminants represent distinct yet complementary indicators of environmental pollution-heavy metals reflect long-term inputs from natural and industrial sources, while pharmaceuticals s

The effect of Chlorella supplementation in pregnant women with low-grade inflammation.

Pregnancy dramatically changes maternal metabolism and the microbiome. Low-grade inflammation can cause maternal complications and fetal abnormalities. The objective of this open-label, randomized, controlled study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of orally administered Chlorella, a green alga that is commercially available as a dietary supplement with rich nutrients and dietary fiber for pregnant women with low-grade inflammation. Patients with C-reactive protein levels >0.05 mg/dL (16 weeks gestation, n = 22) were enrolled and randomly allocated to the Chlorella group (n = 10) or cont
