Hepatic Vitamin A Concentrations in Vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops) Supplemented with Carotenoids Derived from Oil Palm.

Commonly used in biomedical research, vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops) are omnivorous but primarily meet their vitamin A requirements from provitamin A carotenoids. Hypervitaminosis A has occurred in vervets that consume feed high in preformed vitamin A. We investigated the vitamin A status of vervets supplemented daily with various antioxidants derived from palm oil. Male vervets (n = 40) were placed for 23 wk on a high-fat diet (34.9% energy) containing 645 μ g retinol activity equivalents (RAE), with 515 μ g RAE from preformed vitamin A. Vervets were randomized to 5 treatments (duration, 20 m

Natural history of inhalation melioidosis in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) and African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is recognized as a serious health threat due to its involvement in septic and pulmonary infections in areas of endemicity and is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a category B biothreat agent. An animal model is desirable to evaluate the pathogenesis of melioidosis and medical countermeasures. A model system that represents human melioidosis infections is essential in this process. A group of 10 rhesus macaques (RMs) and 10 African green monkeys (AGMs) was exposed to aerosolized B. pseudomallei 1026b.

Pathology of inhalational Francisella tularensis spp. tularensis SCHU S4 infection in African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

Tularemia, caused by Francisella tularensis, is a sporadic zoonotic disease with the potential to be an agent of biowarfare or bioterrorism. We describe here the gross, histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings in a group of 5 African green monkeys (AGMs) that received an average inhaled dose of 729 colony-forming units of F. tularensis and died or were euthanatized between days 7 and 11 post infection. Clinical changes were evident by 48 hours post infection, and key physiologic abnormalities included increases in body temperature, heart rate, peak cardiac pressure, and me

Probable genetic origin for a large number of cataracts among captive-bred vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

During a period of 6 years, uni- or bilateral cataracts occurred in 55 captive-bred vervet monkeys, representing 27.6% of all offspring produced in that time. Fifty-eight percent of all cases were detectable only by ophthalmoscopy. A total of 30% of cases were offspring of wild-caught parents, 40% from first-generation captive-bred parents, 4% from second-generation captive-bred parents, and 26% from parents of which one was wild caught. Cataracts that could be observed macroscopically appeared at about 6-8 mo of age. A sample of juvenile vervet monkeys with cataracts and their parents had no

Aging-related Alzheimer's disease-like neuropathology and functional decline in captive vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus).

Age-related neurodegeneration characteristic of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) begins in middle age, well before symptoms. Translational models to identify modifiable risk factors are needed to understand etiology and identify therapeutic targets. Here, we outline the evidence supporting the vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) as a model of aging-related AD-like neuropathology and associated phenotypes including cognitive function, physical function, glucose handling, intestinal physiology, and CSF, blood, and neuroimaging biomarkers. This review provides the most comprehensive

Intra-Host SARS-CoV-2 Evolution in the Gut of Mucosally-Infected Chlorocebus aethiops (African Green Monkeys).

In recent months, several SARS-CoV-2 variants have emerged that enhance transmissibility and escape host humoral immunity. Hence, the tracking of viral evolutionary trajectories is clearly of great importance. Little is known about SARS-CoV-2 evolution in nonhuman primate models used to test vaccines and therapies and to model human disease. Viral RNA was sequenced from rectal swabs from Chlorocebus aethiops (African green monkeys) after experimental respiratory SARS-CoV-2 infection. Two distinct patterns of viral evolution were identified that were shared between all collected samples. First,

Leishmania donovani whole cell antigen delivered with adjuvants protects against visceral leishmaniasis in vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

In a previous immunogenicity and efficacy study in mice, montanide ISA 720 (MISA) was indicated to be a better adjuvant than bacillus calmette guerin vaccine (BCG) for a Leishmania vaccine. In the present study, we report the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of Leishmania donovani (L. donovani) sonicated antigen delivered with alum-BCG (AlBCG), MISA or monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) in vervet monkeys following intradermal inoculums. Vaccinated and control animals were challenged with virulent L. donovani parasites and the parasitic burden was determined. Only animals vaccinated with alum-BCG

Radiographic Assessment of Spinal Degeneration in Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops): Prevalence, Patterns, and Relevance to Primate Aging Models.

Degenerative changes of the vertebral column are common in aging primates; however, patterns of spinal osteopathy remain poorly characterized across small- and medium-bodied primate species, limiting comparative interpretations of skeletal aging. Expanding assessments beyond well-studied taxa provides a broader framework for understanding primate musculoskeletal senescence and generates baseline data essential for interpreting vertebral degeneration in wild and semi-free-ranging populations, where ecological and life-history factors influence skeletal aging. We investigated age-, sex-, and bod

The expression of type I and II gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors transcripts in Vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) spermatozoa.

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH), acting via the GnRH receptor (GnRHR), and a member of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR), plays an essential role in the control of reproduction while operating primarily at the hypothalamic level of the gonadotropic axis. GnRH and its receptor are co-expressed in certain specific cells, suggesting an autocrine regulation of such cells. In the male reproductive system, two forms of GnRH (I and II) and its receptors (GnRHR) are present in the human and non-human primate (NHP) testis, prostate, epididymis, seminal vesicle, and human spermatozoa. In humans, t

Delayed match-to-sample performance in African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus): effects of benzodiazepine, cholinergic, and anticholinergic drugs.

Delayed match-to-sample (DMTS) procedures are among the most commonly used attention and memory tasks in behavioral pharmacology and have been utilized in a variety of species. Although macaque species such as the rhesus and cynomolgus macaque are often used for such studies, availability and disease transmission raise concerns over their use. The present study investigated whether the African green monkey might function as a suitable alternative by evaluating operant performance on a DMTS task and comparing this species' response to some commonly used drugs (0.025-0.075 mg/kg physostigmine, 0

Effects of three mydriatic drug regimens on pupil size in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops).

BACKGROUND: Human mydriatric drug use in non-human primates (NHPs) has been documented but not quantified and compared for effectiveness. The objective of this study was to determine which drug regimen provided the most effective and consistent mydriatic effect for ophthalmologic examinations and other procedures. Secondary objectives were to determine average time to maximum dilation and whether species differences existed. METHODS: Twelve rhesus and 12 African green monkeys were randomly assigned to one of six treatment combinations to test the mydriatic effects of three drug regimens: (1)

A morphological study and the variability in the number of infraorbital foramina in the African green monkey (Grivet) (Chlorocebus aethiops) using microcomputed tomography.

Knowledge of the nonhuman primate morphology and anatomy related to craniofacial mechanoreception is essential for a fundamental understanding of the incidents that have occurred during the evolution of craniofacial features. The present study focuses on the variability in the number of infraorbital foramina and associated anatomical structures such as the infraorbital canal (IOC) and the infraorbital groove (IOG), as they are considered to play an important role in the behavioral ecology of these animals. A total of 19 skulls of Chlorocebus aethiops were analyzed. The number of infraorbital f

Genetic characterization of Strongyloides fuelleborni infecting free-roaming African vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts.

Human strongyloidiasis is an important neglected tropical disease primarily caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis, and to a lesser extent Strongyloides fuelleborni which mainly infects non-human primates. Zoonotic sources of infection have important implications for control and prevention of morbidity and mortality caused by strongyloidiasis. Recent molecular evidence suggests that for S. fuelleborni, primate host specificity is variable among genotypes across the Old World, and consequently that these types likely vary in their capacity for human spillover infections. Populations o

The vervet monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops) as an experimental model for Trypanosoma brucei gambiense human African trypanosomiasis: a clinical, biological and pathological study.

It has long been known that the vervet monkey, Chlorocebus (C.) aethiops, can be infected with Trypanosoma rhodesiense, but this model has not been described for T. gambiense. In this study, we report the development of such a model for human African trypanosomiasis. Twelve vervet monkeys infected with T. gambiense developed chronic disease. The duration of the disease ranged between 23 and 612 days (median 89 days) in five untreated animals. Trypanosomes were detected in the blood within the first 10 days post-infection and in the cerebrospinal fluid, with a median delay of 120 days (n = 4, r

Molecular and morphologic characterization of Trichuris trichiura infecting free-roaming African vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts.

Human trichuriasis is an important disease caused by the soil-transmitted helminth Trichuris trichiura, which typically affects human populations in low socioeconomic situations. Natural hosts of T. trichiura include humans and certain non-human primates (NHPs), giving rise to concerns that NHPs could serve as zoonotic reservoirs of T. trichiura in locations where humans and NHPs exist in proximity. Free-roaming vervets (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus), introduced from Africa to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts represent cause for concern given their propensity to roam within urban environments

An Intranasal Challenge Model in African Green Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops) for Mild-to-Moderate COVID-19 Disease Caused by Subvariant XBB.1.5.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) primarily causes mild to moderate respiratory illness in humans, but infection can also lead to long-term complications, including chronic fatigue, respiratory and cardiac issues, or even death. In November 2021, the emergence of the highly transmissible Omicron variant marked a significant shift in the pandemic, with its subvariants rapidly spreading and continuing to evolve worldwide. The continuing introduction of Omicron subvariants underscores the need for the development of up-to-date vaccines, as well as for appropriate animal

No evidence for sylvatic cycles of chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses in African green monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) on St. Kitts, West Indies.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses (DENV, CHIKV and ZIKV) are transmitted in sylvatic transmission cycles between non-human primates and forest (sylvan) mosquitoes in Africa and Asia. It remains unclear if sylvatic cycles exist or could establish themselves elsewhere and contribute to the epidemiology of these diseases. The Caribbean island of St. Kitts has a large African green monkey (AGM) (Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus) population and is therefore ideally suited to investigate sylvatic cycles. METHODS: We tested 858 AGM sera by ELISA and PRNT for virus-specific antibodies and
