A 9-year-old Maine coon cat presented with right-sided Horner and facial nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a heterogeneously contrast-enhancing mass occupying the right dorsolateral compartment of the tympanic cavity and extending into the ventromedial compartment, which was expanded and fluid filled. A ventral bulla osteotomy was performed to debulk the soft tissue mass. Histopathology revealed a cholesteatoma. The cat showed slow improvement of clinical signs and was euthanized eleven months postoperatively for unrelated causes. The MRI characteristics of middle ear ch

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that an anomalous change of Notch signaling might be involved in the pathophysiology of cholesteatoma.
BACKGROUND: The Notch signaling pathway regulates integrated growth and differentiation control of keratinocytes. Its involvement in cholesteatoma proliferation has not been elucidated.
METHODS: We obtained cholesteatoma and external auditory canal (EAC) skin samples from patients with middle ear cholesteatoma who underwent tympanomastoid surgery. We performed polymerase chain reaction using the RT2 Profiler™ PCR Array Human Notch Signaling Pathway (Qiagen) in th

Hemifacial spasm is a peripheral myoclonus of the VIIth cranial nerve that is characterized by paroxysmal contraction of the muscles of facial expression. It exists in both primary and secondary forms. In rare cases, hemifacial spasm is caused by middle ear pathology. We describe the case of a 90-year-old man with recurrent cholesteatoma and tympanic segment fallopian canal dehiscence manifesting as right-sided hemifacial spasm. His history was significant for a right-sided tympanomastoidectomy for cholesteatoma 6 years earlier. Computed tomographic angiography performed to look for vascular c

BACKGROUND: To establish computed tomography (CT) staging of middle ear cholesteatoma and assess its impact on the selection of the surgical procedure.
MATERIAL/METHODS: Prospective study was conducted on 61 consecutive patients (mean age 26.8 years) with middle ear cholesteatoma. CT scan of the temporal bone and surgery were performed in all patients. CT staging classified cholesteatoma according to its location in the tympanic cavity (T); extension into the mastoid (M); and associated complications (C). Cholesteatoma was staged as stage I (T1, T2), stage II (T3, M1, M2, C1), and stage III (

Petrous bone cholesteatoma, or cholesteatoma that extends beyond the middle ear and mastoid, represents a rare but destructive pathology. Diagnosis can be difficult before substantial morbidity is incurred, and patients can present with life-threatening complications. Determination of disease extent and the functional status of the facial nerve and cochleovestibular system are critical in surgical planning. Typically, surgery involves ablative procedures with the goal of complete disease resection given the low likelihood of preserved inner ear function. In experienced hands, disease control a

OBJECTIVES: Middle ear cholesteatoma is a non-tumorous condition that typically leads to hearing loss, bone destruction, and other severe complications. Despite surgery being the primary treatment, the recurrence rate remains high. Therefore, exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying cholesteatoma is crucial for discovering new therapeutic approaches. This study aims to explore the involvement of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation in long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the biological functions and related pathways of middle ear cholesteatoma.
METHODS: The m6A modification patterns of lncR

IMPORTANCE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can cause an obstruction of the tubal orifice and thereby compromise ventilation of the middle ear. The resulting negative pressure in the middle ear may, in turn, lead to the formation of an eardrum retraction pocket and subsequent acquired cholesteatoma. This study hypothesizes that CRS may increase the risk of cholesteatoma.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of cholesteatoma in patients with CRS.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study used a nationwide, population-based claims database to test the hypothesis that CRS may increase the risk of c

INTRODUCTION: To reduce incidence of residual cholesteatoma following ear surgery; and to reduce the need for second look "open" mastoidectomy using endoscopic mastoidotomy. Ten-year retrospective chart review of 249 primary cholesteatoma cases (1994-2004) with a minimum follow-up of two years. The first objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of otoendoscopy in reducing the incidence of "cholesteatoma remnant" at the time of primary surgery. The second investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of otoendoscopy in reducing the need to open the mastoid cavities during "second look oper

OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) the relationship between chronic inflammatory changes in the ossicular chain area (OCA) and the formation of cholesteatoma and (2) the correlates between aberrant gene expression and abnormal proliferation of cholesteatoma.
METHODS: Two hundred sixty-four ears with chronic otitis media that had undergone ear surgery were included in this study for statistical analysis of the relationship between abnormalities in the OCA and cholesteatoma. Fourteen middle ear cholesteatoma specimens were collected for immunohistochemical analysis of candidate molecules involved in

Labyrinthine fistula is a complication of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma. Canal wall down tympanoplasty with partial mastoid cavity obliteration and complete removal of cholesteatoma matrix was adopted in five cases of labyrinthine fistula. The operation resulted in elimination of vertigo. Sensory hearing has been saved in two cases. Air conduction hearing improved in one case. In three cases whose air conduction deteriorated post-operatively, bone conduction worsened in two cases and remained unchanged in one case (Tympanoplasty type 0 was performed in the other one case.) During the

Background: The indications for transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) for middle ear cholesteatoma have expanded for cases involving mastoid extension. However, TEES is not indicated for all cases with mastoid extension. In addition, predicting the extent of external auditory canal (EAC) removal needed for cholesteatoma resection is not always easy. The purpose of this study was to use augmented reality (AR) to project the lesion onto an intraoperative endoscopic image to predict EAC removal requirements and select an appropriate surgical approach. Methods: In this study, patients showing m

Middle-ear cholesteatoma is a serious illness of the ear, which untreated can often lead to serious complications. The treatment is always surgical. The operation focuses on removing the cholesteatoma and repairing damaged structures like the ossicular chain. It is of utmost importance, that primary care physicians maintain a high suspicion for the presence of cholesteatoma. The most accessible tool is otoscopy. This review gives an overview of symptoms, signs in otoscopy and treatment modalities of cholesteatoma patients in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Classic mastoidectomy and modified mastoidectomy are traditional surgical procedures for middle ear cholesteatoma with goals of eradicating diseases, creating dry ears and preventing severe complications. However, the drawback of these procedures is the lack of hearing improvement. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the effects and safety of a modification of closed tympanoplasty for middle ear cholesteatoma.
METHODS: Eighty-three patients were recruited in this study based on the following two criteria: each patient had middle ear cholesteatoma in one ear; the affected ear

In this report, we presented 3 cases of congenital middle ear cholesteatoma which occurred in a 12-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, and a 6-year-old boy. In all 3 cases, there was a whitish mass behind a normal tympanic membrane. Congenital middle ear cholesteatoma is not a rare disease. In the early stage, it is asymptomatic. But when it progresses, this disorder can destroy conductive systems of the middle ear and cause many symptoms. One patient (Case 1) had a complaint of hearing impairment. She underwent mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty; however, the cholesteatoma recurred. The other 2 pat

The process of connective tissue breakdown in chronic otitis media is described in the context of recent advances in our understanding of collagen degradation and bone resorption. The significance of the initial step in collagen breakdown, brought about by the action of a specific collagen dissolving enzyme is emphasized in terms of recent studies in other chronic inflammatory diseases characterized by connective tissue breakdown. Bone resorption, a characteristic feature of chronic otitis media, requires the breakdown of collagen, which comprises over 90 percent of bone protein. Evidence in s
