Association between the non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL- cholesterol ratio and abdominal aortic aneurysm from a Chinese screening program.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) can result in high mortality upon rupture but are usually undiagnosed because of the absence of symptoms in the early stage. Ultrasound screening is regarded as an impactful way to prevent the AAA-related death but cannot be performed efficiently; therefore, a target population, especially in Asia, for this procedure is lacking. Additionally, although dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis are associated with AAA. However, it remains undetermined whether the non-high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is

Implications of torcetrapib failure for the future of HDL therapy: is HDL-cholesterol the right target?

Owing to many potentially anti-atherogenic functions and the inverse correlation of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (C) plasma levels with cardiovascular risk, HDLs have evolved as an attractive target for the prevention and therapy of coronary heart disease. Previously, the failure of torcetrapib, the frequent confounding of low HDL-C with other pro-atherogenic conditions, as well as inconsistent data from patients and animal models with genetic HDL dyslipidemias, left in doubt the suitability of HDL-C as a target for anti-atherogenic therapy. However, HDL-C is an integrative but n

Non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol ratio is an independent risk factor for liver function tests abnormalities in geriatric population.

BACKGROUND: Excessive lipid depositing in liver cells could induce pathophysiological development of liver. Our study aimed to assess whether non-HDL cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol ratio (NonHDLc/HDLc) is an independent risk factor for liver function tests (LFTs) abnormalities in geriatric population. METHODS: We enrolled 1745 eligible subjects (714 males, 1031 females) with normal liver function tests at baseline who participated in annual health checkup for liver disease in 2015. Logistic regression models were used to examine the independent relationship between NonHDLc/HDLc ratio and LFTs

Determinants of Achieved LDL Cholesterol and "Non-HDL" Cholesterol in the Management of Dyslipidemias.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The advent of combination therapy to provide LDL lowering beyond that achieved with statins necessitates the development of greater understanding of how drugs work together, what changes occur in key lipoprotein fractions, and what residual risk remains. RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical trials of agents that, when added to statins, generate profound LDL lowering have been successful in reducing further the risk of cardiovascular disease. LDL cholesterol can be now decreased to unprecedented levels, so the focus of attention then shifts to other apolipoprotein B-containing, atherog

The effects of serum cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels on gallstone cholesterol concentration.

OBJECTIVE: Gallbladder stones are common in the Western world, and 70% to 80% of gallstones are cholesterol stones. This study investigates the effects of serum cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels on gallstone cholesterol concentration. METHODOLOGY: The gallstones of 75 patients with cholelithiasis were examined using spectrophotometry. RESULTS: High serum cholesterol and LDL levels were associated with high cholesterol stone rates (86.7% vs. 40.0%, P < 0.001; 75.0% vs. 48.9%, P < 0.05, respectively). Similarly, high serum cholesterol and LDL levels were correlated with high gallbladder stone c

The association between the non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol ratio and 28-day mortality in sepsis patients: a cohort study.

The focus of this study was to explore the association between the non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol (non-HDLc/HDLc) ratio and mortality in septic patients. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with sepsis in the eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) from 208 distinct ICUs across the United States between 2014 and 2015 that explored. All-cause mortality within 28 days after ICU admission. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the risk of death. Of the 724 patients with a median age of 68 years, 43 (5.94%) died within 28 days after ICU admiss

Good Cholesterol Gone Bad? HDL and COVID-19.

The transmissible respiratory disease COVID-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected millions of people worldwide since its first reported outbreak in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since then, multiple studies have shown an inverse correlation between the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and the severity of COVID-19, with low HDL levels being associated with an increased risk of severe outcomes. Some studies revealed that HDL binds to SARS-CoV-2 particles via the virus's spike protein and, under certain conditions, such

HDL Subclass Analysis in Predicting Metabolic Syndrome in Koreans With High HDL Cholesterol Levels.

BACKGROUND: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a complex mixture of subclasses with heterogeneous atheroprotective activities. We analyzed HDL-C subclass in relation to cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a population with high HDL-C levels. METHODS: A total of 300 Korean individuals with high HDL-C levels (≥2.331 mmol/L) were enrolled following a comprehensive general medical examination including body composition analysis. HDL3-C levels were measured using the HDL3-EX SEIKEN kit (Randox Ltd., Crumlin, UK) and non-HDL3-C levels were calculated by subtracting HDL

Atherogenic impact of lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase and its relation to cholesterol esterification rate in HDL (FER(HDL)) and AIP [log(TG/HDL-C)] biomarkers: the butterfly effect?

The atherogenic impact and functional capacity of LCAT was studied and discussed over a half century. This review aims to clarify the key points that may affect the final decision on whether LCAT is an anti-atherogenic or atherogenic factor. There are three main processes involving the efflux of free cholesterol from peripheral cells, LCAT action in intravascular pool where cholesterol esterification rate is under the control of HDL, LDL and VLDL subpopulations, and finally the destination of newly produced cholesteryl esters either to the catabolism in liver or to a futile cycle with apoB lip

Is a High HDL-Cholesterol Level Always Beneficial?

The specific interest concerning HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) is related to its ability to uptake and return surplus cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver and, therefore, to its role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, but also transient ischemic attack and stroke. Previous epidemiological studies have indicated that HDL-C concentration is inversely associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and that it can be used for risk prediction. Some genetic disorders are characterized by markedly elevated levels of HDL-C; h

Acceleration of HDL-Mediated Cholesterol Efflux Alleviates Periodontitis.

Periodontitis (PD) is a common inflammatory disease known to be closely associated with metabolic disorders, particularly hyperlipidemia. In the current study, we demonstrated that hypercholesterolemia is a predisposing factor in the development of PD. Logistic regression analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between PD and dyslipidemia. Data from in vivo (PD mouse model subjected to a high cholesterol diet) and in vitro (cholesterol treatment of gingival fibroblasts [GFs]) experiments showed that excess cholesterol influx into GFs potentially contributes to periodontal inflammation

Prevalence of low HDL-cholesterol in patients with cardiovascular risk factors: The ECHOS (Etude du Cholesterol HDL en Observationnel) French Survey.

A low concentration of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular heart disease (CHD), but little is known about the distribution of HDL-C in France. This study evaluated the prevalence of low HDL-C among a large French population (5232 patients) with other cardiovascular risk factors. Depending on the guidelines used, the prevalence of low HDL-C varied from 8.7% (cutoff value of 35 mg/dl) to 26.9% (National Cholesterol Education Program metabolic syndrome cutoff values). The prevalence of low HDL-C gradually increased with the number of assoc

Calculated Non-HDL Cholesterol Includes Cholesterol in Larger Triglyceride-Rich Lipoproteins in Hypertriglyceridemia.

CONTEXT: Calculated non-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (non-HDLC) should selectively include cholesterol from atherogenic lipoproteins to be a reliable risk marker of cardiovascular disease. In hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), there is increased abundance of larger and less atherogenic triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRL), namely, larger very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), and chylomicrons. OBJECTIVE: We aim to demonstrate that serum triglyceride (TG) level has a substantial impact on non-HDLC's ability to represent cholesterol from atherogenic lipoproteins, even though TG is not par

HDL particle concentration, but not HDL cholesterol, is inversely associated with mortality after liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplant recipients (LTRs) are at increased risk of long-term mortality in part due to cardiometabolic complications. Dyslipidemia is common after transplantation, but conventional lipid measurements, such as high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), may capture different aspects of HDL compared with its particle concentration and size. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy allows quantification of HDL particle concentration (HDL-P), subclasses (small, medium, and large), and size, which might better reflect the impact of HDL on morbidity and mortality. Monocyte-to-HDL ratio and non-HDL cholesterol were predictors of septic shock in newborns.

BACKGROUND: The association between lipoprotein levels and late-onset neonatal sepsis has shown controversial results. The aims are to assess lipid profile, cytokines, and Monocyte-to-HDL (M/H) ratio as diagnostic and prognostic markers for late-onset neonatal sepsis. METHODS: This prospective study included 49 septic neonates and 17 controls. Cholesterol (CT), Triglyceride (TG), Very-Low-Density (VLDLc), Low-Density (LDLc), and High-Density Lipoproteins (HDLc) were measured at admission (D0) and on days 3, 7 and 10 to evaluate septic shock outcomes. Cytokines and monocytes were evaluated by

HDL Cholesterol and the Triglyceride-to-HDL Cholesterol Ratio in Relation to Coronary Artery Disease Complexity in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Background/Objectives: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) frequently develop diffuse and anatomically complex coronary artery disease (CAD), resulting in a substantially increased cardiovascular risk. Although both HDL-C and the triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio have been associated with cardiovascular risk, their relative associations with and discriminatory performance for angiographic CAD complexity remain uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate and compare these two lipid parameters in relation to CAD complexity as assessed by the SYNTAX score

Association Between Non-HDL/HDL Cholesterol Ratio and Urinary Incontinence in US Women:NHANES 2005-2018.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common health issue among women, and dyslipidemia has been suggested as a potential novel risk factor. The ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR) provides a comprehensive assessment of lipid metabolism imbalance. However, its association with UI remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between NHHR and UI in adult women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2018.

Non-HDL and LDL cholesterol, but not calculated remnant cholesterol, are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels represent a significant modifiable risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. However, a residual risk persists, possibly attributed to other atherogenic lipoproteins such as non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) and remnant cholesterol. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the independent associations between these lipid biomarkers and early atherosclerotic disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative contributions of LDL, non-HDL, and remnant cholesterol to subclinical atherosclerosis, assessed by carotid

Emerging therapies for raising high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and augmenting HDL particle functionality.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles are highly complex polymolecular aggregates capable of performing a remarkable range of atheroprotective functions. Considerable research is being performed throughout the world to develop novel pharmacologic approaches to: (1) promote apoprotein A-I and HDL particle biosynthesis; (2) augment capacity for reverse cholesterol transport so as to reduce risk for the development and progression of atherosclerotic disease; and (3) modulate the functionality of HDL particles in order to increase their capacity to antagonize oxidation, inflammation, thrombosis
