Chondroblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor of cartilaginous origin. The typical localization of a chondroblastoma is the epiphysis of long tubular bones--the patella is a very unusual site with an estimated occurrence of 2%. We report a case of a 16-year-old patient with a chondroblastoma of the patella associated with a pathologic fracture. Partial resection of the patella was performed. This is the sixth case in the literature that associates patellar chondroblastoma with fracture.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical, pathologic and radiologic features of chondroblastoma occurring in sites other than epiphysis and apophysis of long bones, and to investigate possible reasons for misdiagnosis.
METHODS: The clinical, pathologic and radiologic data of 18 chondroblastoma cases occurring in atypical sites were collected from 5 major hospitals in Shanghai during the past 12 years. S-100 immunostaining was performed to confirm the cartilaginous differentiation of the tumor cells.
RESULTS: Chondroblastoma occurred in small bones of feet in 10 of the 18 cases (55.6%) studied, being

Chondromas are benign tumors characterized by the formation of mature cartilage. Typically, they involve the short bones of the hands and feet. The lesions may be either solitary or multiple as part of enchondromatosis affecting several bones. Cases of multiple enchondromatosis with predominantly unilateral distribution are generally referred to as "Ollier's disease" or when accompanied by multiple hemangiomas as "Maffucci's syndrome". In cases with multiple chondromas there is considerable risk of malignant transformation (approximately 50%). Treatment of single lesions (curettage and bone gr

Chondroblastomas typically affect the epiphysis of the long bones in young patients, and only rarely occur in the elderly >70 years. Approximately 10% to 20% of chondroblastomas are located in the small bones of the hands or feet, however, they are rare in the carpal bones. Chondroblastoma is a benign tumor, but it may show not only aggressive clinical course but also pulmonary metastases. We report a case of chondroblastoma in a 75-year-old woman that originated in the right trapezium, involving the proximal half of the first metacarpal. She had noticed a mass in her right wrist for approxima

The chondroblastoma is a rare lytic osseous lesion, which is typically to be found in the epiphyses of the long tubular bones. We present a case report with the differential diagnostic imaging and the surgical therapy of a chondroblastoma of the proximal tibial epiphysis. A 16-year-old male presented in the traumatological accident and emergency centre with knee pain of unclear origin that had been increasing for several months. He had no memory of any acute trauma. For further clarification, a conventional radiograph in two planes, a thin-layer CT, a multiplanar MRI before and after Gd-DTPA,

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1995eng
A 13-year-old boy with the diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans underwent arthroscopic examination of his knee joint. At surgery a cartilaginous mass in the medial femoral condyle was identified. Biopsy samples confirmed the diagnosis of chondroblastoma, which was removed completely through the arthroscope. A second arthroscopic examination of the knee was conducted at 6 months, and showed no residual disease. Clinical and radiographic follow-up of the affected joint 5 years after surgery was satisfactory. Arthroscopic removal of an intra-articular tumor is an attractive treatment alternativ

A series of 30 chondroblastomas was reviewed: 21 had occurred in the lateral part of the temporal bone, 6 in the mandible, 1 in the parietal bone, and 2 in the region that included the temporal bone and mandible. Of the 30 patients in the series, 20 were males and 9 were females; the sex of 1 patient was not stated. The ages of 29 patients ranged from 2 years 11 months to 70 years (mean, 43.5 years). Radiologic findings were not suggestive of a specific diagnosis, although the lesions appeared to be benign. Histologically, most tumors were classic chondroblastomas. However, some showed aneurys

Benign chondroblastoma is a rare tumor in the temporal bone. It occurs preponderantly in middle-aged men as a mass in the postero-superior region of the ear canal and is accompanied by hearing loss. On pathologic examination, giant cells and focal regions of chondroid differentiation are noted. After the extent of the tumor has been determined, the treatment is surgical removal. Preoperative irradiation may be helpful. Long-term follow-up is essential.

Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign primary bone tumor usually involving secondary centers of enchondral ossification. The consistent epiphyseal location in the great majority of chondroblastomas signifies that the tumor may arise from an aberrant germ cell of the physeal plate. This case report describes a chondroblastoma located in a atypical nonphyseal location, namely in the right fourth metatarsal base. Cases such as these imply that the cell of origin may not exclusively be derived form the physeal plate. The clinical-radiographic significance is that historically chondroblastoma is consid

INTRODUCTION: Chondroblastoma is an uncommon benign, locally destructive tumor that usually arises from epiphyses of the long bones. Temporal bone chondroblastoma is an extremely rare occurrence. Chondroblastoma arise from immature cartilage cells and it may display certain malignant features by invading surrounding structures and metastasizing to adjacent sites.
AIM: To present a case of extradural temporal bone chondroblastoma and discuss the clinical presentation, radiographic findings, histology and particularly the surgical management of the case.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 31-y

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone chondroblastoma is a rare primary bone tumor that affects the floor of the middle cranial fossa. This tumor is known to have high recurrence rate after curettage, and wide resection is therefore recommended. However, the literature provides little information regarding long-term results after wide resection of temporal bone chondroblastoma.
METHODS: Four cases of surgically treated temporal bone chondroblastoma underwent long-term follow-up.
RESULTS: Four patients, 3 males and 1 female, with mean age of 34, were surgically treated at the neurosurgery department of K

Background and Importance Chondroblastoma is a benign primary bone tumor that typically develops in the epiphyses of long bones. Chondroblastoma of the craniofacial skeleton is extremely rare, with most cases occurring in the squamosal portion of the temporal bone. In this report, we describe the first case of chondroblastoma of the clivus presenting with cranial neuropathy that was treated with endoscopic endonasal resection. We review the literature on craniofacial chondroblastomas with particular emphasis on extratemporal lesions. Case Presentation A 27-year-old woman presented with severe

Chondroblastomas account for <2% of all bone tumors. The calcaneus is the fifth most common location of occurrence. Males in their second decade of life are most often affected, presenting with an insidious onset of localized pain, swelling, and tenderness. The finding of associated pathologic fracture has been rare. Imaging studies can aid in the formulation of the differential diagnosis and surgical plan. The definitive diagnosis requires histologic examination. Curettage and bone grafting is curative in >80% of cases. Local recurrence rates of ≤38% have been reported, most often because of

Chondroblastoma of the patella is rare. Aneurysmal bone cysts, which develop from a prior lesion such as a chondroblastoma, are seldom seen in the patella. The authors report a case of a 36-year-old man who presented with 2 years of right knee pain without calor, erythema, pain on palpation, or abnormal range of motion. Radiological studies suggested aneurysmal bone cyst. The lesion was excised with curettage and the residual cavity filled with autogenous bone graft. Histopathology revealed chondroblastoma associated with a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst. In the follow-up period, the patient d

A 30-year-old male had been suffering from left temporalgia of six months duration and then developed left hearing disturbance. Craniogram and bone window CT revealed a well defined osteolytic lesion in the left temporal bone. CT scan showed an expansile heterogenous mass with calcification. Both T1 and T2 weighted MRI demonstrated a well lobulated mixed intensity mass, but no evidence of dural or intracranial invasion. The tumor exhibited homogenous enhancement on CT and MRI. Angiogram revealed a well marked staining supplied by the left middle meningeal and deep temporal arteries. Subtotal r

Thirty cases of chondroblastoma treated (between 1950 and 1986) at the Cochin-St-Vincent de Paul group of hospitals in Paris were reviewed. The most frequent sites (63 per cent) were the proximal epiphyses of the femur, humerus and tibia. The male predominance is clear (63 per cent) and the lesion was generally discovered in the second decade of life (66 per cent). Three cases of intra-articular invasion were noted, of which one involved a meniscus. The treatment was surgical in every case (two cases had adjuvant radiotherapy besides, because of an initial erroneous diagnosis of malignancy). F

Three femoral head chondroblastomas (one associated with aneurysmal bone cyst) were excised, using a technique of percutaneous extraarticular curettage. Whereas a standard approach to the femoral head lesion requires hip arthrotomy plus a cortical window in the femoral head or neck, the extraarticular technique enters the tumor cavity via a tunnel drilled from the lateral femoral cortex through the medullary canal of the femoral neck. The videoarthroscope assists with visualization during curettage of the cartilage tumor. Bone graft material may be packed into the tumor cavity without fear of
