OBJECTIVE: To report a case of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata and present a brief literature review.
DESCRIPTION: The authors report the case of a 52-day-old child presenting the main findings of the syndrome: rhizomelic micromelia, characteristic facies, suction difficulty and anthropometric measures below the expected indexes for his age. Skeletal radiographies showed humeri and femora shortening and calcifications stippling on shoulders, hips and knees joints. The patient also presented heart malformation, a less common manifestation of the syndrome.
COMMENTS: The rhizomelic form of…

BACKGROUND DATA: Our purpose was to describe the deformities, natural history, and course of treatment in chondrodysplasia punctata, a skeletal dysplasia characterized by stippled epiphysis in infancy, short stature, and progressive kyphoscoliosis.
STUDY DESIGN: We identified 20 patients (15 female, 5 male) with chondrodysplasia punctata and spinal abnormalities.
RESULTS: The spinal deformity was rarely present in the neonatal radiographs but typically appeared during the first year. We identified three patterns of spinal deformity. The first was a C2 dentocentral synchondrosis separation, w…

Chondrodysplasia punctata is a heterogeneous skeletal dysplasia characterized by small focal calcifications in articular and other cartilages in infancy, referred to as stippled epiphyses, with subsequent epiphysial dysplasia and associated anomalies of the face, eyes and skin. Nasal hypoplasia is commonly seen but secondary respiratory distress is infrequently described. We present two siblings with different degrees of involvement and a review of the different forms of this disorder. When an infant presents with a small nasal airway, the diagnosis of chondrodysplasia punctata should be consi…

Chondrodysplasia Punctata is a rare condition in which there are numerous punctate areas of calcification in the epiphysis. The disease involves not only skeletal but also the cardiovascular, cutaneous, ocular and central nervous system. We present a newborn case with clinical as well as radiographic findings similar to Chondrodysplasia Punctata.

A 10-day-old girl was examined because of a peculiar, patterned hyperkeratosis that was noted at birth. The lesions were distributed over the trunk and limbs and consisted of whorls and streaks of thick, yellow, adherent scales. The salient histologic feature was marked hyperkeratosis with deep invagination of the dilated pilosebaceous ostia nearly to the level of the hair bulb. Additional physical abnormalities included patchy alopecia, bilateral zonular cataracts, a depressed nasal bridge, small stature, and multiple skeletal deformities. Roentgenograms demonstrated widespread stippled epiph

BACKGROUND: To describe the neurologic profiles of Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP); a peroxisomal disorder clinically characterized by skeletal abnormalities, congenital cataracts, severe growth and developmental impairments and immobility of joints. Defective plasmalogen biosynthesis is the main biochemical feature.
METHODS: Observational study including review of clinical and biochemical abnormalities, genotype, presence of seizures and neurophysiological studies of a cohort of 16 patients with RCDP.
RESULTS: Patients with the severe phenotype nearly failed to achieve any motor…

Chondrodysplasia punctata (CP) is a systemic disorder of chondrogenesis. The most prominent features of patients with CP are abnormal faces characterized by a flat nose and short stature. CP patients show various types and levels of hearing loss. This disease is rare, and no successful tympanoplasties with hearing recovery have been reported. Here, we report on a CP case, in which hearing recovery was successfully treated with tympanoplasty.

BACKGROUND: Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP) is an autosomal recessive peroxisomal disorder characterised by rhizomelia, contractures, congenital cataracts, facial dysmorphia, severe psychomotor defects and growth retardation. Biochemically, the levels of plasmalogens (major constituents of cellular membranes) are low due to a genetic defect in their biosynthesis. Cardiac muscle contains high concentrations of plasmalogens. Recently cardiac dysfunction was found in a mouse model for RCDP with undetectable plasmalogen levels in all tissues including the heart. This suggests the impor…

Rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCP) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with many associated medical complications. Prior to this study, natural history information about RCP was limited and based on experiences with small populations of affected individuals. We delineate the natural history of RCP through systematic analysis of 35 previously unreported individuals (as well as review of 62 literature cases with respect to survival and cause of death). Survival, growth, and developmental expectations and medical needs are summarized based upon experience with this population. Survival…

A child with chondrodysplasia punctata syndrome is presented. In addition to the bilateral congenital cataracts that have been described previously in this syndrome, this child had bilateral corneal punctate erosions. These corneal abnormalities, which to the best of our knowledge have not been described in this syndrome before, persisted for at least three years.

We describe a patient with chondrodysplasia punctata. He had stippled epiphyses and coronal clefting of the vertebral bodies. No peroxisomal abnormalities were detected. His facial appearance and X-rays were suggestive of the Sheffield type of chondrodysplasia punctata. This type of chondrodysplasia punctata appears to be a heterogeneous group.
