BACKGROUND: Isolated thalamic lesions with post-contrast T1 hyperintensity in children may mimic arterial infarction, cerebral venous thrombosis, inflammatory disease, or neoplasm. Structured interpretation of standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, particularly diffusion-weighted imaging/apparent diffusion coefficient (DWI/ADC) correlation and interval follow-up, can help distinguish these entities. Posterior thalamic infarction in a distribution compatible with posterior choroidal artery territory is rare in pediatric patients.

Choroid plexus tumors and ciliary body medulloepithelioma are predominantly pediatric neoplasms. Progress in understanding the pathogenesis of these tumors has been hindered by their rarity and lack of models that faithfully recapitulate the disease. Here, we find that endogenous Myc proto-oncogene protein is down-regulated in the forebrain neuroepithelium, whose neural plate border domains give rise to the anterior choroid plexus and ciliary body. To uncover the consequences of persistent Myc expression, MYC expression was forced in multipotent neural precursors (nestin-Cre:Myc), which produc

Overall, intraventricular supratentorial tumors are rare in childhood. Classification can be based on the separation of lesions originating in intraventricular structures, such as choroid plexuses, from glial neoplasms of the ventricular wall which tend to infiltrate the ventricular cavities. Aim of the present study is to review the most common neoplasms of this region in childhood. Choroid plexus tumors (papillomas and carcinomas) and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas are dealt with, while for the other neoplasms which are rarer or more typic of other age ranges, specific reports should b

A variety of neoplasms may arise in the ventricular system. Intraventricular neoplasms may be discovered as an incidental finding at cross-sectional imaging or may manifest with varied symptoms depending on their location, including symptoms of increased intracranial pressure. These lesions may arise from various ventricular structures, including the ependymal lining (eg, ependymoma), subependymal layer (eg, subependymoma), or choroid plexus (eg, choroid plexus neoplasms), or they may have a cell of origin that has yet to be determined (eg, chordoid glioma). Other neoplasms involving the ventr

A case of choroid plexus neoplasm histologically composed of tubular structures lined by a layer of cuboidal epithelium is reported. The neoplasm was located in the fourth ventricle of a 26-year-old man. The intense positivity for antisera anti-vimentin, anti-cytokeratin, anti-EMA and anti-S100 protein exhibited by these cells was consistent with choroid plexus origin. The patient is alive and in good health 5 years after surgery. The lesion represents a benign choroid plexus neoplasm not previously reported. The name "tubular adenoma of choroid plexus" is suggested for this variant.

Intraventricular neoplasms are readily seen on cross-sectional images, but the myriad possibilities may make a focused differential diagnosis elusive. Consideration of the tissue within and composing the ventricular lining and the clinical findings provide the means to limit the differential diagnosis when analyzing an intraventricular mass on an imaging study. Ependymomas are typically calcified, are more common in children, are more common in the fourth ventricle, and show intense enhancement on contrast-enhanced images. Subependymomas and central neurocytomas have an affinity for the anteri

Choroid plexus carcinoma is a rare neoplasm and occurs more frequently in children than in adults. Most of these neoplasms in adults arise in the fourth ventricle. A 22-year-old male with choroid plexus carcinoma presenting in the lateral ventricle is reported. The patient was treated by radiotherapy after surgical removal of the tumour. Modern management possibilities and its limitations are discussed.

Intraocular choroidal metastasis is a very rare cause of blindness. Carcinoma of breast is the most common primary malignancy the accounts for choroidal metastasis in females. Other primary neoplasms which can uncommonly metastasize to the choroid are gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, pancreas, prostate and testis. Metastatic neoplasm to the eye outnumbers the primary tumors such as retinoblastoma and malignant melanoma. We present a case of sudden loss of vision due to breast cancer metastasis to the eyeball. The interval between the diagnosis of the primary tumor and the choroidal metastasis

Colloid cysts are the commonest masses of the third ventricle. Third ventricle neoplasms are uncommon. They include tumors arising from the choroid plexus (papillomas, carcinomas), tumors arising from other than the choroid plexus (ependymomas, meningiomas), metastases, and lymphoma. Choroid plexus tumors usually occur in the lateral ventricle in children and fourth ventricle in adults, and often present with hydrocephalus. We herein describe the extremely rare occurrence of third ventricle choroid plexus papilloma in a 35-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a long hist

A 22 year old female presented with a single seizure. CT scan and craniotomy demonstrated an intraventricular papillary tumor with histologic and immunohistochemical features indicative of a choroid plexus carcinoma. Even though the occurrence of this neoplasm is exceptional beyond childhood, pathologists should considered a malignant choroid plexus tumor when postulating the differential diagnosis of intraventricular papillary neoplasms in adults.

There are many types of neoplasms in or around the foramen of Luschka (FL), and definitive diagnosis in some cases requires knowledge of imaging findings. The uncommon and challenging neoplasms with FL involvement considered in this study are exophytic brainstem glioma, primary glioblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), primary anaplastic ependymoma of the CPA, choroid plexus papilloma of the FL, solitary FL choroid plexus metastasis, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the jugular foramen, paraganglioma of the jugular foramen, exostosis of the jugular foramen, psammomatous meningiom

Immunocytochemical characterization of choroid plexus neoplasms was performed in seven cases, five being of benign choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) and the other two of malignant choroid plexus papilloma (choroid plexus carcinoma CPC). Immunohistochemical examination was performed with antibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S-100 protein, prealbumin, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and gamma-enolase. All of the five CPPs were positive for GFAP, S-100, prealbumin, and gamma-enolase; and four of them were positive for EMA. None of the CPPs was posi

Choroid plexus tumors are rare intraventricular papillary neoplasms derived from choroid plexus epithelium, which account for approximately 2% to 4% of intracranial tumors in children and 0.5% in adults. Almost all choroid plexus carcinomas are seen in children and are extremely rare in adults. Headache, diplopia, and ataxia are the most common symptoms usually caused by mechanical obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow followed by hydrocephalus, regardless of tumor location. We present an illustrative case with 73 years old male patient who was consulted with headache to our neurosurgery dep

The MRI appearance of intraventricular neoplasms is often nonspecific, however knowledge of patient age and tumor location facilitates the formulation of a differential diagnosis. Imaging and pertinent clinical features of the following intraventricular neoplasms are reviewed: ependymoma, subependymoma, central neurocytoma, subependymal giant cell tumor, choroid plexus tumors, medulloblastoma, meningioma, chordoid glioma, rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor, central nervous system lymphoma, and metastasis.

Ventricular neoplasms can be grouped together as a single disease entity because of the behavior of some of the tumors and similarities between the access of therapy and procedure of operation. In our series, the incidence of various ventricular neoplasms (shown in decreasing order) were metastasis, astrocytoma, ependymoma, meningioma, choroid plexus papillomas and oligodendroglioma. The intraventricular tumors included some metastasis involved by hematogenous spread, meningioms, and choroid plexus papilloma while paraventricular tumors included some of the systemic myeloproliferative disorder

The choroid plexus in the normal state shows a beautiful papillary (or villous) architecture supported by the intricately ramifying, thin fibrovascular stroma. This configuration is retained in benign and malignant neoplasms derived therefrom. The choroid plexus was involved in the pathological process of leukemic cell infiltration in one case reported here and in chronic cryptococcal leptomeningitis in the other case. The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle were arranged extensively in a tubular (acinar) configuration, in association with remarkable stromal fibrosi

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cerebral ventricular system is secreted by a neuroepithelial tissue which is called as the choroid plexus. Tumors arising from these tissues are rare. Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) have been denoted as WHO grade I of the choroid plexus tumors. Among the intracranial tumors, neoplasms of the choroid plexus constitute around 0.36-0.6%. CPPs are mostly slow growing and cause symptoms due to mass effect and obstructive hydrocephalus, resulting in increased intracranial pressure. We report a case of CPP arising from the temporal horn in a 7-year-old girl pres
