The cellular distribution of the lysosomal proteinase cathepsin D was studied in a series of 76 neoplasms and 18 non-neoplastic tissues from the human central nervous system, using a well-characterized polyclonal antibody in a peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. In the normal and developing brain, cathepsin D is confined to neurons and choroid plexus epithelium. Strong granular cytoplasmic staining was present in neuronal and choroid plexus neoplasms, and in reactive macrophages. A large variety of other neoplasms also exhibited positive cytoplasmic staining, albeit usually of a weaker diffus

Colloid cysts are the commonest masses of the third ventricle. Third ventricle neoplasms are uncommon. They include tumors arising from the choroid plexus (papillomas, carcinomas), tumors arising from other than the choroid plexus (ependymomas, meningiomas), metastases, and lymphoma. Choroid plexus tumors usually occur in the lateral ventricle in children and fourth ventricle in adults, and often present with hydrocephalus. We herein describe the extremely rare occurrence of third ventricle choroid plexus papilloma in a 35-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a long hist

Intraventricular neoplasms are readily seen on cross-sectional images, but the myriad possibilities may make a focused differential diagnosis elusive. Consideration of the tissue within and composing the ventricular lining and the clinical findings provide the means to limit the differential diagnosis when analyzing an intraventricular mass on an imaging study. Ependymomas are typically calcified, are more common in children, are more common in the fourth ventricle, and show intense enhancement on contrast-enhanced images. Subependymomas and central neurocytomas have an affinity for the anteri

A choroid plexus papilloma is a rare CNS neoplasm arising from the neuroepithelial lining of the choroid plexus. A third ventricular location of a choroid plexus papilloma is rare compared with the more common sites in the lateral and fourth ventricles. Cystic choroid plexus papilloma represents an infrequent subtype that may present diagnostic ambiguity. The authors present a case of cystic choroid plexus papilloma within a cavum septum pellucidum that radiographically mimicked neurocysticercosis.

Immunocytochemical characterization of choroid plexus neoplasms was performed in seven cases, five being of benign choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) and the other two of malignant choroid plexus papilloma (choroid plexus carcinoma CPC). Immunohistochemical examination was performed with antibodies to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S-100 protein, prealbumin, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and gamma-enolase. All of the five CPPs were positive for GFAP, S-100, prealbumin, and gamma-enolase; and four of them were positive for EMA. None of the CPPs was posi

The choroid plexus in the normal state shows a beautiful papillary (or villous) architecture supported by the intricately ramifying, thin fibrovascular stroma. This configuration is retained in benign and malignant neoplasms derived therefrom. The choroid plexus was involved in the pathological process of leukemic cell infiltration in one case reported here and in chronic cryptococcal leptomeningitis in the other case. The epithelial cells of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle were arranged extensively in a tubular (acinar) configuration, in association with remarkable stromal fibrosi

Overall, intraventricular supratentorial tumors are rare in childhood. Classification can be based on the separation of lesions originating in intraventricular structures, such as choroid plexuses, from glial neoplasms of the ventricular wall which tend to infiltrate the ventricular cavities. Aim of the present study is to review the most common neoplasms of this region in childhood. Choroid plexus tumors (papillomas and carcinomas) and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas are dealt with, while for the other neoplasms which are rarer or more typic of other age ranges, specific reports should b

Choroid plexus tumors are rare intraventricular papillary neoplasms derived from choroid plexus epithelium, which account for approximately 2% to 4% of intracranial tumors in children and 0.5% in adults. Almost all choroid plexus carcinomas are seen in children and are extremely rare in adults. Headache, diplopia, and ataxia are the most common symptoms usually caused by mechanical obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid flow followed by hydrocephalus, regardless of tumor location. We present an illustrative case with 73 years old male patient who was consulted with headache to our neurosurgery dep

Choroid plexus carcinoma is a rare neoplasm and occurs more frequently in children than in adults. Most of these neoplasms in adults arise in the fourth ventricle. A 22-year-old male with choroid plexus carcinoma presenting in the lateral ventricle is reported. The patient was treated by radiotherapy after surgical removal of the tumour. Modern management possibilities and its limitations are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus tumors are intraventricular neoplasms derived from the choroid plexus epithelium. A better knowledge of molecular factors involved in choroid plexus tumor biology may aid in identifying patients at risk for recurrence.
METHODS: Methylation profiles were examined in 29 choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs, WHO grade I), 32 atypical choroid plexus papillomas (aCPPs, WHO grade II), and 31 choroid plexus carcinomas (CPCs, WHO grade III) by Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 Bead Chip Array.
RESULTS: Unsupervised hierarchical clustering identified 3 subgroups: methylation

Choroid plexus tumors are rare pediatric neoplasms ranging from low-grade papillomas to overtly malignant carcinomas. They are commonly associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome and germline TP53 mutations. Choroid plexus carcinomas associated with Li-Fraumeni syndrome are less responsive to chemotherapy, and there is a need to avoid radiation therapy leading to poorer outcomes and survival. Malignant progression from choroid plexus papillomas to carcinomas is exceedingly rare with only a handful of cases reported, and the molecular mechanisms of this progression remain elusive. We report a case of

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of multiple sclerosis and intracranial neoplasms is very rare, and whether this occurrence can be explained by a causal relationship or by coincidence remains a matter of debate. Possible roles of the choroid plexus as a site of tumor cell invasion and lymphocyte infiltration into the central nervous system have been hypothesized in recent studies.
METHODS: We describe a 13-year-old boy with concurrent multiple sclerosis and choroid plexus papilloma, then review the published literature with a focus on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of neuroinflammation in multipl

A 22 year old female presented with a single seizure. CT scan and craniotomy demonstrated an intraventricular papillary tumor with histologic and immunohistochemical features indicative of a choroid plexus carcinoma. Even though the occurrence of this neoplasm is exceptional beyond childhood, pathologists should considered a malignant choroid plexus tumor when postulating the differential diagnosis of intraventricular papillary neoplasms in adults.

The incidence of choroid plexus papilloma is about 0.5% of all intracranial tumors, but choroid plexus papilloma in the third ventricle is rare. Fortuna reported 56 cases of choroid plexus papilloma of the third ventricle in 1979. Among them, the neoplasm of the third ventricle in the neonatal period was not found. This report is a case of choroid plexus papilloma of the third ventricle in the neonatal period. A 34 day-old female was admitted to our service with complaints of head enlargement, vomiting, and convulsive seizures on January 8, 1981. Enlarged head had been noticed by her family wi

Choroid plexus papilloma is a rare intracerebral neoplasm that occasionally disseminates along the neuraxis. The fine structure of such a metastatic papilloma appears to correspond very closely to that of normal choroid plexus. Lack of capillary endothelial pores is the only meaningful difference. There does not appear to be an ultrastructural feature that is unique to disseminating choroid plexus papilloma.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cerebral ventricular system is secreted by a neuroepithelial tissue which is called as the choroid plexus. Tumors arising from these tissues are rare. Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) have been denoted as WHO grade I of the choroid plexus tumors. Among the intracranial tumors, neoplasms of the choroid plexus constitute around 0.36-0.6%. CPPs are mostly slow growing and cause symptoms due to mass effect and obstructive hydrocephalus, resulting in increased intracranial pressure. We report a case of CPP arising from the temporal horn in a 7-year-old girl pres

BACKGROUND: It is very rare for a choroid plexus tumor to occur intraparenchymally in the absence of a relation to the choroid plexus.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A case of cerebral intraparenchymal choroid plexus tumor in a 30-year-old woman presenting with left hemiparesis is described. Brain magnetic resonance imaging depicted a large cystic mass in the right frontal lobe. Tumor resection was performed by right frontal craniotomy. No connection with the choroid plexus was observed during the operation. Histologically, the tumor exhibited a glandular structure with a papillary pattern suggesting

INTRODUCTION: Atypical choroid plexus papilloma is a rare tumour, recently defined by the World Health Organisation and with very few cases reported to date. Choroid plexus tumours are rare intraventricular neoplasms originating from choroid plexus epithelium, with benign papillomas being more frequent than carcinomas. Most of these lesions appear in children, mainly located in the lateral ventricles. Those arising from the fourth ventricle are more frequent in adulthood. Surgery with complete resection can be curative in papillomas, with 5-year survival rates close to 100% and occasional recu
