The colour of amphibian skin and eyes (retina and iris) is the result of light interacting with cells called chromatophores, primarily xanthophores, iridophores and melanophores, that can be found in various combinations. Thus, identifying the chromatophores involved in colour abnormalities in this group is challenging, particularly if it is solely based on a visual comparison of atypical versus typical individuals, as light may be interacting with several types of chromatophores at once. As most records of colour aberrations will likely continue to be based on visual assessments without the p

The emergence of thylakoid membranes in cyanobacteria is a key event in the evolution of all oxygenic photosynthetic cells, from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. Recent analyses show that they could originate from a unique lipid phase transition rather than from a supposed vesicular budding mechanism. Emergence of thylakoids coincided with the great oxygenation event, more than two billion years ago. The acquisition of semi-autonomous organelles, such as the mitochondrion, the chloroplast, and, more recently, the chromatophore, is a critical step in the evolution of eukaryotes. They resulted from pr

The organization of proteins in the chromatophore membrane, particularly of the reaction center and the light-harvesting polypeptide, was examined by the use of a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic cross-linking reagent, namely DSP (dithiobis-succinimidyl propionate) and glutaraldehyde. The linkage of proteins was studied by SDS polyacrylamide pore gradient electrophoresis. DSP was shown to link proteins within the core of the membrane. The subunit H of the reaction center is linked with DSP at a low concentration, either with itself or with other membrane proteins but not to the subunits M and L.

Pigment aggregation in shrimp chromatophores is triggered by red pigment concentrating hormone (RPCH), a neurosecretory peptide whose plasma membrane receptor may be a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR). While RPCH binding activates the Ca2+ /cGMP signaling cascades, a role for cyclic AMP (cAMP) in pigment aggregation is obscure, as are the steps governing Ca2+ release from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). A role for the antagonistic neuropeptide, pigment dispersing homone (α-PDH) is also unclear. In red, ovarian chromatophores from the freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium olfersi, we show th

Groupers play an important role in coral reef ecosystems as top predators, but much remains unknown about their diverse colorations. Hulong hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀×E. lanceolatus ♂) typically exhibits a black-brown patterned appearance but occasionally aberrant morphs, including pure white, pure yellow, and variegated forms which exceed the phenotypic range of either parent. What is the physiological basis of these transgressive colorations? Does each aberrant phenotype reflect an independent underlying state? Here, we combined long-term phenotypic observation with cytologi

Brain-targeted drug delivery is crucial both for achieving highly efficient treatment of brain-related diseases and for avoiding severe side effects of systemic drug distribution. However, such obstacles from the administration site to the brain as mucus clearance and blood brain barrier challenge the practical applications. Herein we propose dual drug-loaded chromatophore nanorockets (CNs) driven by FOF1-ATPase motors to promote brain targetability for orthotopic glioma therapy. The FOF1-ATPase motor-embedded CNs were obtained from Thermus thermophilus, after which two drugs (temozolomide and

We have succeeded in creating see-through frogs from natural color mutants of the Japanese brown frog Rana japonica, which usually possesses an ochre or brown back; this coloration enables the organs, blood vessels, and eggs to be observed through the skin without performing dissection. We crossed two kinds of recessive color mutant (black-eyed and gray-eyed) frogs through artificial insemination, and F2 offspring produced frogs whose skin is translucent throughout the life cycle. Three kinds of dermal chromatophores--xanthophores, iridophores, and melanophores--are observed in a layered arran

Albinism is the most common color variation described in fish and is characterized by a white or yellow phenotype according to the species. In rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, aside from yellow-albino phenotypes, cobalt blue variants with autosomal, recessive inheritance have also been reported. In this study, we investigated the inheritance pattern and chromatophores distribution/abundance of cobalt blue trouts obtained from a local fish farm. Based on crosses with wild-type and dominant yellow-albino lines, we could infer that cobalt blue are dominant over wild-type and co-dominant in rela

Seemingly chaotic waves of spontaneous chromatophore activity occur in the ommastrephid squid Dosidicus gigas in the living state and immediately after surgical disruption of all known inputs from the central nervous system. Similar activity is apparent in the loliginid Doryteuthis opalescens, but only after chronic denervation of chromatophores for 5-7 days. Electrically stimulated, neurally driven activity in intact individuals of both species is blocked by tetrodotoxin (TTX), but TTX has no effect on spontaneous wave activity in either D. gigas or denervated D. opalescens Spontaneous TTX-re

Amphibians can obtain their colour from a combination of several different pigment and light reflecting cell types called chromatophores, with defects in one or several of the cells leading to colour abnormalities. There is a need for better recording of colour abnormalities within wild amphibian populations, as this may provide baseline data that can be used to determine changes in environmental conditions and population dynamics, such as inbreeding. In this study, we provide records of several types of chromatophore deficiencies, including those involving iridophores, xanthophores and melano

Hypermelanosis associated with chromatophore hyperplasia was documented in an incidental specimen of Terapon jarbua (Forsskål, 1775) collected from a semi-intensive brackish-water culture pond used for Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) production. Gross examination revealed prominent, irregular, and partially coalescent hypermelanotic patches distributed along the lateral body surface and fins, accompanied by localized skin ulceration, whereas the internal organs appeared macroscopically normal. Radiographic assessment indicated that the lesions were restricted to soft tissues, with no evidenc

BACKGROUND: Colour polymorphism in aposematic species is often associated with ecological divergence and predator selection. In amphibians, colouration is achieved through the chromatophore unit, a layered structure of pigment-containing cells (xanthophores, melanophores) and structural cells (iridophores) that interact to produce the final skin colouration. In dendrobatid frogs of the genus Oophaga, striking red and green morphs coexist within and across species, yet the cellular mechanisms underlying this variation remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We investigated the histological basis of

Semiconductor nanocrystals, often known as quantum dots, have been used extensively for a wide range of applications in bioimaging and biosensing. In this article, we report that the pH-sensitive cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) were used as a proton sensor to detect proton flux that was driven by ATP synthesis in chromatophores. To confirm that these QD-labeled chromatophores were responding to proton flux pumping driven by ATP synthesis, N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) was used as an inhibitor of ATPase activity. Furthermore, we applied the QD-labeled chromatophores as a viru

Animal pigmentation is essential for concealment and communication in nature. Though selection acts on the phenotypes of an organism, these traits are often resolved to genes that shape pigmentation in populations. In contrast, plasticity in coloration can occur within individuals in response to ambient environmental changes that act through integrative processes. It is well known that some animals often change color to match their visual ecology. The cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, can switch between robust blue and yellow body morphs in the lab and the wild. Different colors result from

Evolutionary responses to opposing directions of natural selection include trade-offs, where the phenotype balances selective forces, and compensation, where other traits reduce the impact of one selective force. Zooplankton pigmentation protects from ultraviolet radiation (UVR) but attracts visual predators. This trade-off is understudied in the ocean where planktonic larvae in surface waters face ubiquitous UVR and visual predation threats. We tested whether crab larvae can behaviorally reduce UVR risk through downward swimming or expansion of photoprotective chromatophores. Then we examined

Although pigment systems have been extensively studied in vertebrates and cephalopods, those of many invertebrate groups, including nemerteans (Nemertea), remain poorly understood. Nevertheless, nemerteans represent a valuable model for evolutionary studies. Here, we investigated the tissue and cellular organization underlying body coloration in nine nemertean species from three classes (Palaeonemertea, Hoplonemertea, and Pilidiophora) using light and transmission electron microscopy. Our results show that coloration in nemerteans is mediated not only by specialized pigment cells (chromatophor

Zebrafish possess three classes of chromatophores that include iridophores, melanophores, and xanthophores. Mutations that lack one or two classes of chromatophores have been isolated or genetically constructed. Using a behavioral assay based on visually mediated escape responses, we measured the visual response of fully and partially pigmented zebrafish. In zebrafish that lack iridophores (roy mutants), the behavioral visual responses were similar to those of wild-type animals except at low contrast stimulation. In the absence of melanophores (albino mutants) or both melanophores and iridopho

Acidocalcisomes are acidic, calcium storage compartments with a H(+) pump located in their membrane that have been described in several unicellular eukaryotes, including trypanosomatid and apicomplexan parasites, algae, and slime molds, and have also been found in the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. In this work, we report that the H(+)-pyrophosphatase (H(+)-PPase) of Rhodospirillum rubrum, the first enzyme of this type that was identified and thought to be localized only to chromatophore membranes, is predominantly located in acidocalcisomes. The identification of the acidocalcisomes of
