BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) and Leishmaniasis, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania species, are treated with outdated drugs that are toxic and have limited efficacy. New therapeutic alternatives are therefore needed. Natural products are valuable scaffolds for drug discovery, and Asteraceae species exhibit microbicidal activity.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the antiparasitic activity and selectivity of two Asteraceae species, Chromolaena hookeriana and Campuloclinium macrocephalum, against trypanosomatids.
METHODS: C. hookeriana and C. macrocephalum extracts were profiled by u

Investigation of components of the chloroform-soluble and ethyl acetate-soluble extracts of the aerial parts of Chromolaena odorata L. selected by PCSK9 mRNA expression monitoring assay in HepG2 cells led to the isolation of a new stilbene dimer, (+)-8b-epi-ampelopsin A (1), and 30 known compounds (2-31). The structures of the isolates were established by interpretation of NMR spectroscopic data and the stereochemistry of the new stilbene (1) was proposed based on ECD and NMR calculations. Among the isolates, 1, 5,6,7,4'-tetramethoxyflavanone (6), 5,6,7,3',4'-pentamethoxyflavanone (7), acaceti

Siam weed [Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & Robinson], an invasive exotic weed in China, was proposed as a feedstock for bioethanol production. This would be a promising way of using for an invasive weed that needs management and control. It was found that the glucan content of the weed stem was similar to that of sugarcane bagasse, but higher than those of corn stover and wheat straw. Several chemical pretreatment methods were applied to the weed stem to increase its enzymatic digestibility. Mild sulfuric acid (<120 degrees C) or alkali pretreatment did not markedly increase the enzymatic dige

The Thai Karen, the largest hill-tribe in Thailand, guard substantial ethnomedicinal plant knowledge, as documented in several studies that targeted single villages. Here, we have compiled information from all the reliable and published sources to present a comprehensive overview of the Karen ethnomedicinal plant knowledge. Our dataset covers 31 Karen villages distributed over eight provinces in Thailand. We used the Cultural Importance Index (CI) to determine which species were the most valuable to the Karen and the Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) to evaluate how well distributed the knowled

The paucity of information in the literature on the characteristics of plants that could be used for phytoremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC)-contaminated sites was the principal reason for this study. The aim of the study was to identify indigenous plants growing in PHC-impacted soil in Umuahia in eastern-Nigeria that have the ability to phytoremediate soils contaminated with hydrocarbons under tropical monsoon climate conditions. A total of 28 native plant species from different families growing in and around hydrocarbon-impacted soil in the vicinity of vandalized pipelines carrying

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains a major global health threat due to the rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains, which limit the effectiveness of current therapies. The ß-keto-acyl carrier protein synthase (KasA), a key enzyme in the FAS-II pathway for mycolic acid biosynthesis, is a promising target for new anti-tuberculosis agents. Chromolaena odorata, a medicinal plant with reported antimicrobial and antituberculosis activity, is a rich source of bioactive flavonoids, including Isosakuranetin, which shows moderate anti-tub
