The Churg-Strauss syndrome is part of the necrotizing vasculitis group of diseases. Its clinical diagnosis rests on the occurrence of a severe asthma followed, more or less closely, by systemic manifestations that are predominantly neurological, cutaneous, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular. To these must be added pulmonary infiltrates, eosinophilia and increase in serum IgE's. Three histological criteria (necrotizing vasculitis of the small vessels, perivascular infiltration with numerous eosinophils and extravascular granulomas) enable this anatomico-clinical syndrome to be identified, but …

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is medium blood vessels vasculitis with predilection for lungs in patients with bronchial asthma, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia and positive ANCA in the sera in 55-67%. This is a case report of a 60 years old female patient with bronchial asthma, peripherial pulmonary infiltrations, blood eosinophilia, xerophtalmia, tachycardia, chronic rhinosinustis, polyneuropathia and negative imunological tests: CIC (PEG), CRYO, ANA (IIF), RF (aglutination) and ANCA (IFF: pANCA and cANCA; ELISA: proteinase 3, lactoferrin, myeloperoxidase. elastase, cathepsin G). Churg-Strauss syndrome or allergic granulomatosis and angiitis is a vasculitis that is found in adults, but is extremely rare in children. We describe a 14-year-old boy who presented with prolonged fever, weight loss, sinusitis, myalgia and arthralgia, testicular pain, pulmonary infiltrations, pericardial effusion, peripheral neuropathy, and eosinophilia. Muscle biopsy showed necrotizing arteritis with eosinophil infiltration. His clinical course was complicated by several seizures secondary to cerebral vasculitis and severe asthma, resulting in death. The clinical features and outcomes of chi…

Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare, small-sized vessel systemic necrotizing vasculitis that was first described in the early 1950s. Its most typical presentation consists of the appearance, in a patient with late-onset asthma, of vasculitic manifestations, like fever, cutaneous purpura and mononeuritis multiplex. In such a setting, the combination of blood eosinophilia and inflammatory syndrome is highly suggestive of the diagnosis, which can be further supported by the detection of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCN), especially P-ANCA with anti-myeloperoxidase specificity, in almo…

The authors present the case of a 56-year-old man, admitted to the hospital twice in ten days for acute coronary syndrome with normal corona … y infiltrates and bronchoalveolar lavage revealed increased lymphocytes and eosinophils, suggesting Churg-Strauss syndrome with the probable cardiac manifestation of coronary vasospasm. A cardiac MRI was also performed but was inconclusive due to the patient's intolerance of the exam.

A case of Churg-Strauss syndrome in patient admitted to the Department of Rheumatology with suspected obliterative atherosclerosis is described. Churg-Strauss syndrome is an uncommon disease and may therefore has not been immediately recognized. The diagnosis was based on course of the disease, clinical manifestations, laboratory and serological tests. Treatment with methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide resulted in dissolutions of many disease symptoms.

A 68-year-old asthmatic presented markedly unwell with arthralgia, mononeuritis multiplex, peripheral neuropathy, and eosinophilia. His past medical history included perennial rhinitis, and nasal polyps. Three months prior to admission his prednisolone was stopped and Montelukast was started. The diagnosis of Montelukast-associated Churg-Strauss syndrome was made. The drug was stopped and steroids started with general improvement and reduction of eosinophilia; however, the neurological deficit persisted.

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a rare disease belonging to the group of necrotizing vasculitides affecting medium and small vessels, classified together with Wegener granulomatosis and microscopic polyarteritis. The literature is reviewed concerning vasculitides associated with drug use, focusing on CSS. A representative case of CSS is reported, in whom the possibility could not be excluded that oestrogen replacement therapy contributed to the onset of CSS. The case of a 56-year-old female patient is presented who had a history of allergic rhinitis and steroid-dependent asthma for years. To p…

We describe a 7-year-old boy with Churg Strauss syndrome who presented with a 3-month history of cough, wheeze, fever, weight loss, abdominal pain, skin lesions, proteinuria and pulmonary infiltrates with eosinophilia. He showed a good response to corticosteroid treatment and is currently doing well. The case illustrates the difficulty and importance of reaching a diagnosis in a rare condition for which there is an effective treatment, and serves to remind paediatricians of its existence.

A 54-year-old woman died after being battered, but the forensic autopsy revealed that her injuries were not serious or lethal. A detailed histological examination revealed that the basic disease had been Churg-Strauss syndrome. The differentiation of this syndrome of pulmonary infiltration and eosinophilia (PIE syndrome) from other allergic and noninfectious granulomatoses needs cautions consideration.

BACKGROUND: Churg-Strauss syndrome often involves the skin, and this may sometimes reveal the disease.
OBSERVATION: A 25-year-old woman was referred to a gynaecologist for inflammation of the right breast with breast discharge. Cytological analysis of the liquid showed numerous inflammatory cells, particularly polymorphonuclear eosinophils and neutrophils. Ultrasound examination of the breast was consistent with galactophoritis. CRP was normal, and hypereosinophilia was seen. The patient was subsequently referred to a dermatology unit. Skin examination revealed inflammation of the entire brea…

Churg-Strauss syndrome is an uncommon disease of unknown cause described initially by Churg and Strauss in 1951. Even though it was initially thought to be a variant of polyarteritis nodosa, its pathological, clinical, and laboratory features show that it is related to the small vessel vasculitides, and it is now classified as an antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis. The presence of asthma, usually of adult onset, along with other allergic symptoms, peripheral and tissue eosinophilia, is specific to this disease. These features usually help clinicians distinguish it from o…

The association of leukotriene receptor antagonists and Churg-Strauss Syndrome (CSS) has been recognised for several years. However, whether these drugs have a direct pathogenic role remains controversial. The present case describes an asthmatic patient, who developed severe obstructive symptoms and progressive heart failure after two sequential exposures to montelukast. As the patient exhibited a markedly raised blood eosinophil count with diffuse infiltrates on chest x-ray and signs of myocarditis, CSS was suspected. The disease was confirmed by open lung biopsy. The symptoms improved rapidl…

Allergic granulomatosis is a rare life-threatening systemic disorder of unknown origin, which represents a variant of systemic necrotizing vasculitis affecting medium-sized arteries and venules. Histologically, allergic granulomatosis is characterized by vascular and extravascular necrotizing palisading granulomas with prominent eosinophilia (Churg-Strauss granulomas). The clinical criteria include atopy with severe allergic asthma, pronounced peripheral eosinophilia, and nodular infiltrates of the skin and internal organs (Churg-Strauss granulomas). The internal organs most commonly involved

Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) or allergic granulomatosis angiitis is a rare primary vasculitic disease. CSS can be diagnosed by the presence of any four or more of the six criteria, which include asthma, eosinophilia greater than 10%, paranasal sinusitis, pulmonary infiltration, histological proof of vasculitis and mono- or poly-neuropathy. We report here on a 45-year-old male who developed erythematous macules, papules and hemorrhagic vesicles on both right extremities along with a tingling sensation and sacral pain. He has been suffering from recurrent allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma f…
