Correlates of behavior change intents in response to a hypothetical flavored cigar sales restriction among U.S. adult flavored cigar smokers.

Flavored cigar sales restrictions (FCSRs) may reduce cigar smoking and protect public health. This study examined the correlates of behavior change intents in response to a hypothetical FCSR. Data were from a nationally representative sample of adult flavored cigar smokers (ages ≥21; n = 343) collected through an online survey in 2021. Respondents selected their behavior change intents in response to a hypothetical FCSR, including (1) quitting cigars altogether; (2) smoking plain or non-flavored cigars; (3) smoking other flavored tobacco products; (4) smoking cannabis; and (5) other options. Comparative levels of carbonyl delivery between mass-market cigars and cigarettes.

The recent 2016 deeming of cigars by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has led to increased interest in cigar science, including ways to accurately measure the harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) found within mainstream cigar smoke. At present, there are standardized methods for evaluating HPHCs in mainstream cigarette smoke but none specific to cigar analysis except for nicotine and carbon monoxide. This study sought to analyze carbonyl delivery in marketed cigars and cigarillos and compare them against levels found in cigarettes. To accomplish this the standard cigar

The association of pipe and cigar use with cotinine levels, lung function, and airflow obstruction: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is the major cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but studies on the contribution of other smoking techniques are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pipe and cigar smoking was associated with elevated cotinine levels, decrements in lung function, and increased odds of airflow obstruction. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Population-based sample from 6 U.S. communities. PARTICIPANTS: Men and women aged 48 to 90 years without clinical cardiovascular disease at enrollment who were part of MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). MEASU

Cigar Cessation Prevalence and Trends by Demographic Characteristics Among US Adults, TUS-CPS, 2010-2019.

INTRODUCTION: Disproportionate rates of cigar smoking across demographic groups can contribute to tobacco-related health disparities in the United States. We assessed overall and demographic-specific cigar cessation rates from 2010 to 2019. AIMS AND METHODS: To characterize cessation prevalence among selected demographic groups over time, we analyzed data from the 2010-2011, 2014-2015, and 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS). Individuals who reported either (1) current cigar smoking for at least 2 years or (2) quitting cigar smoking within the past 12 m

Little Cigars, Filtered Cigars, and their Carbonyl Delivery Relative to Cigarettes.

INTRODUCTION: Little cigars and filtered cigars are currently growing in popularity due to their low cost and wide variety of flavors while retaining an appearance similar to cigarettes. Given the health consequences associated with cigarette use, it is important to understand the potential harm associated with these similar products. This includes the potential harm associated with carbonyls (eg, acetaldehyde, acrolein, formaldehyde, etc.), an important class of toxicants and carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Our objective was to determine the carbonyl levels in mainstream smoke from little and f

Predictors of Cigar, Cigarillo, and Little Cigar Initiation Among Hip Hop-Identifying Youth.

BACKGROUND: We explored predictors of cigar product initiation among Hip Hop-identifying U.S. youth using data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Fresh Empire evaluation. Participants were Hip Hop-identifying youth living in evaluation markets who had not initiated cigar product use at their first survey. OBJECTIVES: We modeled cigar product initiation odds using discrete time survival analysis logistic regression models as a function of factors related to one's large social, physical, social/normative, and intrapersonal environment, and other tobacco use. RESULTS: In the unique sa

Benzene exposure biomarkers are associated with recently smoking tobacco and pumping gasoline in the U.S. population aged 12 and over: NHANES 2017-March 2020.

Benzene exposure is associated with increased risk of cancer and may occur from environmental sources such as smoke and fossil fuels. As part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), our laboratory measures concentrations of benzene exposure biomarkers including benzene in blood (BB) and the urinary benzene metabolites phenyl mercapturic acid (PhMA, N-acetyl-S-phenyl-L-cysteine) and muconic acid (MUCA). The goals of this study were to determine the association between benzene exposure biomarkers and benzene exposure sources, specifically tobacco smoking (i.e., recent s

Perceived message effectiveness of cigar warning themes among adults in the United States.

Most tobacco warnings focus on health harms to the consumer, but other message themes may be promising. We assessed perceived message effectiveness (PME) among adults who smoke cigars for 12 cigar warning statements to discourage smoking, and measured PME across four message themes: explicit health effects to the consumer, secondhand smoke effects, chemicals/constituents, and toxicity. Between April 23 and May 7, 2020, we conducted an online study with U.S. adults who used any cigar type in the past 30 days (n = 777). Participants were randomly assigned to view two out of 12 warnings and rate

Patterns of blunt and cigar use in the United States, 2015-2019.

BACKGROUND: The use of cigars for blunts (i.e., cannabis rolled in cigar paper) is well-documented; proportions of cigar and blunt use and associated characteristics are less studied. METHODS: Pooled data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) were analyzed in 2023. Respondents aged 12+ who reported past 30-day cigar use were categorized into three mutually exclusive use categories: (1) exclusively cigars, (2) exclusively blunts, and (3) both cigars and blunts. We examined associations between cigar-blunt use category and sociodemographic characteristics. RESULTS:

Smoke-Free Ordinances and Policies Protect Youth, but Ordinances Appear to Have Little Impact on Non-Combustible Tobacco Use.

Smoke-free ordinances and policies protect youth from exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) and cigarette use. This study investigated whether smoke-free ordinances also protect youth from the use of other tobacco products. We compared the prevalence of SHS exposure, cigarette smoking, cigar smoking, smokeless tobacco use, and e-cigarette use among high school students living in a municipality with or without a smoke-free ordinance and in homes with and without smoke-free policies. Data were analyzed using the 2017 Mississippi Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 1923). Smoke-free ordinances were found to b

Alternative combusted tobacco product and multiple tobacco product use among individuals with serious mental illness enrolled in a large pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Use of combustible alternative tobacco products (ATPs; e.g., little cigars, loose tobacco, multiple tobacco product types [TPTs]) is increasingly common. Inexpensive, combusted ATPs (e.g little cigars) are predominantly marketed to lower-income communities. Prevalence of combusted ATP use among those with serious mental illness (SMI) is unknown. METHODS: We examined rates and correlates of combusted ATP use and association with tobacco abstinence in a secondary analysis of a single-cohort (N = 1007) trial of tobacco-smoking adults with SMI and severe SMI-related functional impairme

Prospective Predictors of Novel Tobacco and Nicotine Product Use in Emerging Adulthood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether risk factors for cigarette smoking assessed in adolescence predict the use of novel tobacco and nicotine products (hookah, little cigars, and e-cigarettes) in early emerging adulthood. METHODS: In a longitudinal study (N = 862), risk factors were measured in middle and high school, and novel product use was measured in emerging adulthood (mean age 22.4 years). Structural equation modeling was used to test a model predicting lifetime use of any of hookah, little cigars, and e-cigarettes in early emerging adulthood from distal predic
