Cycloviruses, small ssDNA viruses belonging to the Circoviridae family, have been suggested as possible causes of enteric, respiratory and neurological disorders in human patients. One of these species, cyclovirus-Vietnam (CyCV-VN), initially isolated from cerebrospinal fluid samples of patients with unexplained neurological disorders, has since been reported in serum samples from chronically patients infected with HBV, HCV or HIV, in Italy. On the other hand, CyCV-VN was not detected in serum samples from healthy individuals. Here, we report on a high prevalence of 43.4% (40/92) of CyCV-VN in

In some regions, little is known about exposure to viruses in coastal marine mammals. The present study aimed to detect viral RNA or DNA in 23 free-ranging fur seals on the northern coastline of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect nucleic acids of circoviruses, adenoviruses, morbilliviruses, vesiviruses, and coronaviruses in the feces from twenty-one South American fur seals (Arctocephalus australis) and two Subantarctic fur seals (A. tropicalis). Adenovirus DNA fragments were detected in two South American fur seals; nucleotide sequences of these frag

To identify unknown human viruses, we analyzed serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with unexplained paraplegia from Malawi by using viral metagenomics. A novel cyclovirus species was identified and subsequently found in 15% and 10% of serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples, respectively. These data expand our knowledge of cyclovirus diversity and tropism.

Viral infections were investigated in American black bears (Ursus americanus) from Nevada and northern California with and without idiopathic encephalitis. Metagenomics analyses of tissue pools revealed novel viruses in the genera Circoviridae, Parvoviridae, Anelloviridae, Polyomaviridae, and Papillomaviridae. The circovirus and parvovirus were of particular interest due to their potential importance as pathogens. We characterized the genomes of these viruses and subsequently screened bears by PCR to determine their prevalence. The circovirus (Ursus americanus circovirus, UaCV) was detected at

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a disease of pigs first recognised in North America in 1997 and subsequently reported worldwide that is caused by Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), a member of the family Circoviridae. The most consistent feature of PMWS is a generalized depletion of lymphocytes. Secondary infections with opportunistic organisms are common. There is evidence that the destruction of thymic lymphocytes has a central role in the pathogenesis of PMWS. Pigs with PMWS have altered cytokine responses to mitogens and recall antigens. It remains unknown what cells are pri

Porcine circoviruses (PCVs) have been a significant concern in swine health, with PCV2 being a well-established pathogen. However, the newly discovered PCV3 and PCV4 have emerged, and their impact on piglets remains less understood. Understanding their pathogenicity is crucial for effective porcine health management. In this study, 3-week-old piglets were inoculated with PCV2, PCV3, and PCV4. PCV2 led to expected growth inhibition and severe clinical signs like anorexia. PCV3, though showing milder symptoms, exhibited unique tissue tropism, with detectable virus in the heart, lungs, and brain

Duck circovirus (DuCV) infected multiple breeds of ducks and was widespread in duck factories worldwide. Infected ducks exhibited feathering disorder, growth retardation and immunosuppression, which lead to secondary infection with other pathogens easily. But till now, there has been little research on the study of DuCV due to the absence of appropriate cultural measures. This study developed an animal model to investigate the pathogenesis of DuCV-1 in vivo by infecting 84 one-day-old Cherry Valley meat ducklings. At 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days post-infection (DPI), six Cherry Valley meat

Clinical expression of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) infection in swine may result in several distinct syndromes and diseases including post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), reproductive failure, porcine respiratory disease complex, granulomatous enteritis, necrotizing lymphadenitis, and possibly exudative epidermitis. Association of PCV2 with congenital tremor in piglets is still controversial. The extent of the involvement of PCV2 in swine disease other than PMWS is currently poorly understood. This review concentrates on PCV-2-

Emerging viral pathogens are a significant concern, with potential consequences for human, animal and environmental health. Over the past several decades, many novel viruses have been found in animals, including birds, and often pose a significant threat to vulnerable species. However, despite enormous interest in virus research, little is known about virus communities (viromes) in Australian Neophema birds. Therefore, this study was designed to characterise the viromes of Neophema birds and track the evolutionary relationships of recently emerging psittacine siadenovirus F (PsSiAdV-F) circula

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: To investigate virus diversity in hot zones of probable pathogen spillover, 54 oral-fecal swabs were processed from five bat species collected from three cave systems in Kenya, using metagenome sequencing.
RESULTS: Viruses belonging to the Astroviridae, Circoviridae, Coronaviridae, Dicistroviridae, Herpesviridae and Retroviridae were detected, with unclassified viruses. Retroviral sequences were prevalent; 74.1% of all samples were positive, with distinct correlations between virus, site and host bat species. Detected retroviruses comprised Myotis myotis, Myotis ricket

Malabsorption syndrome (MAS) is an economically important disease of young, commercially reared broilers, characterized by growth retardation, defective feather development and diarrheic faeces. Several viruses have been tentatively associated to such syndrome. Here, in order to examine potential associations between enteric viruses and MAS, the faecal viromes of 70 stool samples collected from diseased (n = 35) and healthy (n = 35) chickens from seven flocks were characterized and compared. Following high-throughput sequencing, a total of 8,347,319 paired end reads, with an average of 231 nt,

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is a member of the Circoviridae family and causes psittacine beak and feather diseases (PBFD) in birds. Abnormal feathers, brittle claws and beaks, and susceptibility to secondary infections are typical sympotoms of the BFDV-infected birds. The BFDV virion possesses a single-stranded DNA genome encapsidated within a 17-22 nm non-enveloped icosahedral virions. This study evaluated the loading capacity of BFDV virus-like particles (VLPs) with different biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The reassembled BFDV (ReBFDV) VLPs successfully encapsidated

This review paper concentrates on the aetiology, diagnosis, and pathological aspects of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PMWS was first recognized in Canada in 1996 as a new emerging disease which caused wasting in postweaned pigs. Since then, PMWS has been recognized in pigs in many countries. The syndrome is caused by a DNA virus referred to as porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), which is classified in the family Circoviridae. PMWS primarily occurs in pigs between 25 and 120 days of age with the highest number of cases occurring between 60 and 80 days of age. The diagnosis of PMWS

Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) is a recently identified pathogen in swine populations. It is considered a ubiquitous virus and is frequently associated with subclinical infections throughout various stages of production. PCV3 is detectable in diverse tissues, blood, and secretions, indicating systemic dissemination and potential for both vertical and horizontal transmission. PCV3 has been implicated in reproductive and postnatal diseases collectively named as PCV3-associated diseases (PCV3-AD). Clinically, PCV3-AD encompasses reproductive disorders such as mummified fetuses, stillbirths, and weak

Three strains of chicken anemia virus (CAV) were detected in 11 to 14-weeks old chickens, showing depression, wasting, and increased mortality, from three farms in eastern Japan. Another strain was detected in 12-weeks old chickens from one farm without clinical signs. Bacterial infections were suggested in three farms with clinical signs and its involvement in the occurrence of the diseases might be suspected. Sequence analysis of the VP1, VP2, and VP3 genes of four CAV strains revealed that the three from farms with clinical signs belonged to genotype A2, whereas that from the apparently-nor

Ducks infected with duck circovirus (DuCV) exhibit feathering disorder, growth retardation, and low body weight. The virus can induce immunosuppression and increase rates of infection caused by other pathogens. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the pathogenesis of DuCV in experimentally infected Pekin ducks. At postmortem examination, gross lesions were observed in the immune organs including bursa of Fabricius (BF), thymus, and spleen. Hemorrhage, lymphocytic depletion, necrosis, and degeneration were observed in the bursal tissues by histological examination. The TUNEL assa

Cycloviruses (CyV) (genus Cyclovirus, family Circoviridae) are nonenveloped DNA viruses. The first report in humans was in 2010 and research has focused only on disease-associated human sample detection. The only HuACyV (CyCV-ChileNPA1, HuACyV10) reported in the Chilean population was in children (3.3%) with an acute respiratory infection. Its detection in respiratory samples from adults, with/without respiratory disease remains unknown. The aim of this study was to detect HuACyV10 in adults with and without respiratory disease. HuACyV10 was studied in nasopharyngeal swabs from 105 hospitalize

Circoviruses (family Circoviridae) are small, single-stranded DNA viruses known to infect a broad range of bird species. The Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV), typically associated with parrots, has occasionally been reported in unrelated avian taxa, raising questions about host range and potential spillover. We investigated BFDV-like sequences in three sympatric vultures breeding in Spain (Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus, cinereous vulture Aegypius monachus, and griffon vulture Gyps fulvus). PCR screening revealed low and inconsistent prevalence in Egyptian vultures (7.4%, n = 163)

Given that some DNA viruses have been found to exhibit virus-host co-evolution and establish lifelong infection, mammals with unique evolutionary histories in island ecosystems likely host exceptionally diverse viruses. Madagascar is inhabited by endemic non-human primate and rodent lineages interacting with expansive populations of introduced non-native rodents across the island. Using a viral metagenomic workflow on 189 oral swabs of lemurs and rodents in southeastern Madagascar, we characterized genomic sequences of DNA viruses in the families Adenoviridae, Circoviridae, Orthoherpesviridae,
