BACKGROUND: Balance and mobility impairments are frequent in people with multiple sclerosis, partly due to cerebellar dysfunctions. Task-oriented behavioural approaches were previously shown to promote physical function. The possibility exists that cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) applied during training, known to increase the excitability of the brain, can boost rehabilitation effects through modulation of cerebellum-brain inhibition.
OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of cerebellar ctDCS stimulation combined with motor training on mobility and balance in people with m

BACKGROUND: Impaired mobility is related to low physical activity (PA) levels observed after stroke. Therapeutic approaches, such as task-specific circuit training (TSCT), used to improve mobility in individuals with stroke, could also improve PA levels.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of TSCT, focused on both upper (UL) and lower (LL) limbs, in improving PA levels and mobility (primary outcomes), as well as muscle strength, exercise capacity, and quality of life (secondary outcomes) in subjects with stroke.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with 36 subjects with chronic stroke w

Goal-based training such as task practice combined with aerobic training (AT) has been suggested to improve motor performance and neuroplasticity for people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD); however, its effect on clinical outcomes is unclear. Therefore, the main aim was to investigate the effects of task-oriented circuit training combined with AT (TOCT-AT) on balance and gait in PwPD. The secondary aim was to investigate the effects of TOCT-AT on functional mobility, balance confidence, disease severity, and quality of life. Twenty-six PwPD were randomly assigned to either to the experimental

This study analyzed physiological and mechanical responses to different circuit resistance training structures in young adults. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the acute effects of four distinct circuit resistance training protocols on blood lactate, heart rate, and countermovement jump (CMJ) mechanical variables in 30 experienced young adults. The training sessions differed in both exercise order (alternated vs. grouped) and training volume (maximal vs. submaximal repetitions): A1 (alternated, maximal), G1 (grouped, maximal), A2 (alternated, submaximal), and G2 (

BACKGROUND: Obesity leads to increased oxidative stress, disruption of the antioxidant system, and decreased bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO). This, in turn, contributes to impaired endothelial function. The resulting increase in arterial stiffness (AS) has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Regular physical activity improves the antioxidant system and vascular function. Circuit training combines aerobic exercise and resistance training, encapsulating the benefits of both types of exercise, and helps improve vascular function. We aimed to investigate th

This study's purpose was to compare differences in strength and body composition following high intensity circuit training (HICT) and traditional strength training (TS) in trained women. Fourteen participants (28.5 ± 5.4 years, 160.7 ± 6.1 cm, 65.9 ± 11.7 kg) were randomly assigned to either the HICT group (HICT: n = 7) performing two short circuits with 5 min' rest between each series or the TS group (TS: n = 7) performing one exercise at a time, resting 3 min between sets. Both groups trained 3 days per week for 8 weeks [8-15 repetitions, three sets], close to muscular failure. Body composit

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is a recognized treatment option for severe obesity, and its effectiveness in reducing weight and controlling obesity-related conditions has been demonstrated. However, it can also lead to decreased skeletal muscle mass and strength, increasing the risk of sarcopenia after surgery. This randomized clinical trial studied the effects of a 16-week exercise program on sarcopenia in bariatric surgery patients.
METHODS: Thirty-seven surgery candidates participated in the EXPOBAR (EXercise POst BARiatric) program and were randomized into experimental or control groups.

This study aimed to compare the effects of low-load circuit training (LL-CT) and moderate-load circuit training (ML-CT) on physical performance adaptations, hormonal responses, and hematological parameters in resistance-trained men. Thirty-two resistance-trained males (age 20.31 ± 1.00 y) were randomly assigned to three groups: LL-CT (n = 11), ML-CT (n = 11), or CON (n = 10). Participants in the training groups performed two sessions per week for 8 weeks. Both protocols consisted of four rounds of five exercises in a circuit format with a 30 s work:30 s rest duty cycle and 2-min inter-set rest

Exercise activates the dorsal hippocampus that triggers synaptic and cellar plasticity and ultimately promotes memory formation. For decades, these benefits have been explored using demanding and stress-response-inducing exercise at moderate-to-vigorous intensities. In contrast, our translational research with animals and humans has focused on light-intensity exercise (light exercise) below the lactate threshold (LT), which almost anyone can safely perform with minimal stress. We found that even light exercise can stimulate hippocampal activity and enhance memory performance. Although the circ

Exercise training is widely used for neurorehabilitation of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, little is known about the functional reorganization of the injured brain after long-term aerobic exercise. We examined the effects of 4 weeks of forced running wheel exercise in a rat model of dopaminergic deafferentation (bilateral, dorsal striatal 6-hydroxydopamine lesions). One week after training, cerebral perfusion was mapped during treadmill walking or at rest using [(14)C]-iodoantipyrine autoradiography. Regional cerebral blood flow-related tissue radioactivity (rCBF) was analyzed in three-dim
