INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common malformation from birth. The severity of the different forms of CHD varies extensively from superficial mild lesions with follow-up for decades without any treatment to complex cyanotic malformations requiring urgent surgical intervention. One of the most common severe forms of CHD is tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), characterized by a misalignment of the canal septum leading to a deviation of the aorta to the right. microRNAs (miRs) are crucial in cardiac development, giving rise to possible phenotypes in CHD.
AIM: We aimed to evaluat

BACKGROUND: Chagas cardiomyopathy (CHCM) is the most important clinical manifestation of Chagas disease. The analysis of cardiac miRNAs may contribute to predicting the progression to CHCM in Chagas indeterminate phase and/or to the differential diagnosis for cardiomyopathy.
METHODS: We carried out a case-control study to identify circulating miRNAs associated with CHCM. We assigned 104 participants to four groups: healthy controls (HC), Chagas non-cardiomyopathy controls, CHCM cases, and ischemic cardiomyopathy controls. We performed a clinical, echocardiographic, and laboratory evaluation a

Colorectal cancer is a common tumor in Japan, causing almost 50,000 deaths per year. The development of new biomarkers is strongly desired, in order to detect the early stage of colorectal cancer with high sensitivity and specificity, using less invasive and high through-put methods. miRNA is a small non-coding RNA which regulates gene expression by digesting mRNA or suppressing translation. miRNAs are stable and present in blood, urine, stool, and other body fluids. The profiles of miRNAs in body fluid are specific to pathological states. There is accumulating data showing the usefulness of m

CONTEXT: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), including Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), are the most common autoimmune diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs, which can play pivotal roles in immune functions and development of autoimmunity. Recently, it has been recognized that identification of circulating miRNAs can provide important and novel information regarding disease pathogenesis and clinical condition. However, the role circulating miRNAs in AITD has not yet been described.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize the different circul

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) currently depends on non-specific measures such as Creatine kinase (CK) levels. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small, endogenous RNAs of 21-25 nucleotides, that are important regulators for numerous physiological and pathological processes. The aim of the current study is to assess the potential of miRNAs as non-invasive biomarker for the diagnosis of DMD and for identifying carriers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects and 29 families with one member diagnosed with DMD were enrolled in the study. Peripheral blood samp

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs regulate gene expression by inhibiting the turnover of their target mRNAs. In the last years, it became apparent that miRNAs are released into the circulation and circulating miRNAs emerged as a new class of biomarkers for various diseases. In this review we summarize available data on the role of circulating miRNAs in the context of acute and chronic liver diseases including hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma. Data from animal models are compared to human data and current challenges in the field of miRNAs research are discussed.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level and play a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and gastrointestinal diseases. Previous studies have revealed that miRNAs are dysregulated in intestinal biopsies of patients affected by coeliac disease (CD). Combined bioinformatics analyses of miRNA expression profiles and mRNA target genes as classified by Gene Ontology, are powerful tools to investigate the functional role of miRNAs in coeliac disease. However, little is still known about the function of circulating miRNAs, thei

Regular exercise stimulates numerous structural, metabolic, and morphological adaptations in skeletal muscle. These adaptations are vital to maintain human health over the life span. Exercise is therefore seen as a primary intervention to reduce the risk of chronic disease. Advances in molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics, combined with exercise physiology, have identified many key signaling pathways as well as transcriptional and translational processes responsible for exercise-induced adaptations. Noncoding RNAs, and specifically microRNAs (miRNAs), constitute a new regulatory

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small, non-coding RNA molecules with gene regulatory functions, have emerged to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Current technological advances allow accurate, high throughput profiling of miRNA abundance in different tissues. More recently, extracellular, circulating miRNAs have begun to be demonstrated as highly stable, blood-based biomarkers for diseases. Understanding the interactions between circulating miRNAs and clinical phenotypes can enhance our knowledge of complex diseases and traits. On the other hand, given the advan

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide, and ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy. Women carrying a BRCA1/2 mutation have a very high lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. The only effective risk-reducing strategy in BRCA-mutated women is a prophylactic surgery with bilateral mastectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. However, many women are reluctant to undergo these prophylactic surgeries due to a consequent mutilated body perception, unfulfilled family planning, and precocious menopause. In these patients, an effective scree

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a malignancy with a high incidence in regions endemic for the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, is frequently characterized by alterations in the p53 tumor-suppressor gene, a process often modulated by microRNAs. Our study aimed to identify circulating miRNAs as potential diagnostic biomarkers for CCA.
METHODS: We sequenced small RNAs to identify differentially expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) in two CCA cell lines (one p53-mutant, one p53-wildtype) relative to an immortalized cholangiocyte cell line. Candidate miRNAs exhibiting significant upregula

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Leishmania donovani in India. VL can be complicated by post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a macular or nodular rash that develops in 10%-20% of patients after treatment of VL in India. Patients with PKDL are infectious to sand flies, promoting further transmission of the parasite. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are 18-25 nt, non-coding RNAs that simultaneously regulate the expression of several or many target transcripts. This study was based on the hypothesis that the host response to L. donovani

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity is a serious health problem that is implicated in many metabolic disorders. Recent studies have proposed that microRNA-223 (miR-223) is a potent regulator of many diseases related to obesity. However, the association of miR-223 with obesity remains unclear. In this study, we examined the relationship between serum miR-223 and obesity.
DESIGN: A total of 121 subjects were selected, including 41 normal-weight, 40 overweight and 40 obesity subjects. The overweight and obesity subjects received lifestyle intervention for 3 months after baseline examination. Quantitati
