Citizen Science and Community Engagement in Tick Surveillance-A Canadian Case Study.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in North America and Europe, and on-going surveillance is required to monitor the spread of the tick vectors as their populations expand under the influence of climate change. Active surveillance involves teams of researchers collecting ticks from field locations with the potential to be sites of establishing tick populations. This process is labor- and time-intensive, limiting the number of sites monitored and the frequency of monitoring. Citizen science initiatives are ideally suited to address this logistical problem and generate high-densi

A Theoretically Grounded, Behaviour-Science-Informed Model for Understanding Citizen Biosecurity Reporting.

Citizen reporting of biosecurity threats is an important yet inconsistently practiced element of environmental surveillance. This study examines the behavioural factors shaping reporting in Aotearoa New Zealand by conceptualising reporting as a multi-step process influenced by psychological, social, and structural conditions. Drawing on behavioural science, we apply the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour model alongside audience segmentation to identify barriers and drivers of reporting using a national survey of 957 New Zealand adults. Latent profile analysis identified four distin

Microplastics in the marine environment: development of a new citizen science tool.

Microplastic pollution poses a global threat to all marine ecosystems, and citizen science provides a valuable method for monitoring its presence and distribution. However, volunteers lack access to costly and complex laboratory techniques, such as Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, for accurate identification of microplastics. The purpose of the study was: 1) to develop a simple, low-cost, and field-adaptable protocol that allows volunteers to identify and quantify microplastics by distinguishing them from organic matter and non-plastic materials based on their melting behaviour, and 2) to examine

Living with mental health issues: citizen science project on self-management strategies.

People living with mental health issues use a range of self-management strategies. Most strategy recommendations have been developed by clinicians and researchers, so they may not reflect the full range of approaches used in practice. A citizen mental health science methodology can address this bias in strategy identification. We co-created a list of 77 pre-defined self-management strategies, and 1116 public contributors (n = 468 mental health service users, n = 497 lived experience not using services, n = 151 no lived experience) living in the United Kingdom completed an online survey identif

A deep semantic vegetation health monitoring platform for citizen science imaging data.

Automated monitoring of vegetation health in a landscape is often attributed to calculating values of various vegetation indexes over a period of time. However, such approaches suffer from an inaccurate estimation of vegetational change due to the over-reliance of index values on vegetation's colour attributes and the availability of multi-spectral bands. One common observation is the sensitivity of colour attributes to seasonal variations and imaging devices, thus leading to false and inaccurate change detection and monitoring. In addition, these are very strong assumptions in a citizen scien

Recruitment, Retention, and Training of Citizen Scientists in Translational Medicine Research: A Citizen Science Initiative on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Citizen science is a participatory science approach in which members of the public (citizens) collaborate with scientists and professional researchers and become involved in research and innovation activities, resulting in the co-creation of scientific knowledge and innovation. Citizen science has been widely applied in research, particularly in the social sciences, environmental sciences, information and communication technologies, and public health. However, the application of this approach in clinical sciences, particularly in translational medicine research, is still nascent. This explorat

Thinking outside the box: Citizen science to monitor phlebotomine sand flies in Spain.

The Flebocollect project is a citizen science (CS) initiative in which a diverse group of participants, mainly high-school students, were requested to monitor sand flies (fm. Psychodidae; sfm. Phlebotominae), vectors of Leishmania parasites and Phlebovirus. The project generated entomological data that was then used to prepare an online free-access sand fly monitoring map providing information about the distribution areas of this vector group in Spain. This initiative contributes to our understanding of sand fly dynamics and thus of the risk of disease transmission, while promoting education a

How can citizen science enhance mental health research quality: theory of change development.

OBJECTIVE: Public involvement in mental health research enhances research quality. The use of citizen science methods in mental health research has been described as a conclusion of a movement towards increased public involvement; however, this field is in its early stages of development. Our objective was to create a theory of change (ToC) for how citizen science can be used to enhance mental health research quality. DESIGN: Iterative consultation with the stakeholders of an existing citizen mental health science study, that is, change for citizen science to achieve co-production at scale (C

A nationwide assessment of plastic pollution in the Danish realm using citizen science.

Plastic pollution is considered one of today's major environmental problems. Current land-based monitoring programs typically rely on beach litter data and seldom include plastic pollution further inland. We initiated a citizen science project known as the Mass Experiment inviting schools throughout The Danish Realm (Denmark, Greenland and the Faeroe Islands) to collect litter samples of and document plastic pollution in 8 different nature types. In total approximately 57,000 students (6-19 years) collected 374,082 plastic items in 94 out of 98 Danish municipalities over three weeks during fal

Automated tick classification using deep learning and its associated challenges in citizen science.

Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis significantly impact public health in Europe, transmitted primarily by endemic tick species. The recent introduction of exotic tick species into northern Europe via migratory birds, imported animals, and travelers highlights the urgent need for rapid detection and accurate species identification. To address this, the Swedish Veterinary Agency launched a citizen science initiative, resulting in the submission of over 15,000 tick images spanning seven species. We developed, trained, and evaluated deep learning models incorporating image analysis, obje

The influence of psychological ownership on pride in a Citizen Science project on wildlife ecology.

Voluntary engagement is crucial for committed participation in Citizen Science (CS) projects. So far, the CS literature has argued that psychological ownership (i.e., subjective feelings of owning or possessing an object or entity) facilitates engagement in CS projects and is beneficial for several outcomes, such as attitudes toward CS. This paper argues that, as ownership is a self-relevant experience and facilitates effort and engagement, it should increase self-focused outcomes, such as the self-conscious emotion of pride. This is highly relevant for the CS context due to its voluntary char

Snakes among citizens: distribution and ecology of the Aesculapian snake, Zamenis longissimus (Laurenti, 1768) in Bratislava revealed by citizen science.

BACKGROUND: Urban environments are increasingly recognized as important habitats for wildlife, yet information on how reptiles use urban environments remains scarce. The Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus), a non-venomous colubrid widespread in Central Europe, is considered a habitat generalist with a frequent association with human settlements. However, data on its occurrence and ecology in metropolitan areas are limited. To address this gap, we implemented a citizen science initiative in Bratislava, Slovakia, aiming to document the distribution and habitat use of the Aesculapian snake an

Clustering of recreational divers by their health conditions in a database of a citizen science project.

Divers Alert Network Europe has created a database with a large amount of dive-related data that has been collected since 1993 within the scope of the Diving Safety Laboratory citizen science project. The main objectives of this study are the grouping divers by their health information and revealing significant differences in diving parameters using data mining techniques. Due to the methodology of the project, data cleaning was performed before applying clustering methods in order to eliminate potential mistakes resulting from inaccuracies and missing information. Despite the fact that 63% of

Citizen Science Tick Observations Serve as an Early Warning System for Tick-Borne Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Tick observation data collected through citizen science is increasingly utilised to map tick-borne infection risk areas indirectly, that is, based on the rate of tick encounters or occurrence of ticks. However, direct associations between tick observations and Lyme borreliosis (LB) cases have received little attention. In the current study, associations between weekly tick observations and LB cases were studied on a nationwide scale in Finland, in order to determine if tick observations precede cases in a predictable manner, and whether tick observations could be used to predict

The Sharklogger Network-monitoring Cayman Islands shark populations through an innovative citizen science program.

The use of citizen science can be a cost-effective tool in conservation science but mostly relies on the collation of incidental sighting reports. This study describes the design, operation, and findings of a novel, closely-guided citizen science program (the 'Sharklogger Network') in the Cayman Islands. Participants from the recreational SCUBA diving community used a standardized, effort-based protocol to monitor local coastal shark populations. Over two years (2017-2018) a total of 69 participants conducted 24,442 dives across 472 dives sites and recorded 4,666 shark sightings from eight sha

Getting the full picture: Assessing the complementarity of citizen science and agency monitoring data.

While the role of citizen science in engaging the public and providing large-scale datasets has been demonstrated, the nature of and potential for this science to supplement environmental monitoring efforts by government agencies has not yet been fully explored. To this end, the present study investigates the complementarity of a citizen science programme to agency monitoring of water quality. The Environment Agency (EA) is the governmental public body responsible for, among other duties, managing and monitoring water quality and water resources in England. FreshWater Watch (FWW) is a global c
