Global Citizenship: Cultural, Religious and Spiritual-An Exploratory Scoping Review.

This paper seeks to provide an exploration of the interplay between global citizenship, culture, religion and spirituality. Arksey and O'Malley's (Int J Soc Res Methodol 8(1):19-32, 2005) scoping literature review framework was utilised to qualify the research question, develop inclusion and exclusion criteria, select relevant studies, chart data and collate information. From the available peer-reviewed literature, a total of 44 articles were initially identified using the selection criteria, 19 of which were subsequently analysed. Eight main themes were identified within the literature; (1) d

Religion and the everyday citizenship of people with dementia in Nigeria: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Research on the lived experience of dementia is burgeoning across the social and health sciences. Yet, very little is still known about the experience of dementia for many tribes and ethnoreligious groups, as most studies are conducted in Western countries. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to advance the understanding of the role of faith and prayer in the lives of people with dementia in Nigeria through a lens of everyday citizenship. METHOD: Interviews were conducted with 17 older people with dementia in a low-income, Yoruba-speaking community in Southwestern Nigeria. After transcription,

Biometrics and citizenship: Measuring diabetes in the United States in the interwar years.

In 1936, the journalist Hannah Lees published "Two Million Tightrope Walkers," drawing attention to the significant number of people in the United States estimated to have diabetes. Focusing on how people with diabetes should live, she emphasized the importance of recording the exact values of everything they ate and avoiding all "riotous living" lest they be unable to keep careful measurements of calories, insulin, and sleep. Employing two meanings of measured - as counted and as moderate - Lees was doing more than communicating how someone might control their disease; she was also calling fo

[Evaluation of a citizenship-oriented intervention: The Citizens' Project of the University of Recovery].

Objectives The Global Model of Public Mental Health is "global" not only in the sense of having an international perspective, but in regarding service users as actors at all levels of public mental health exerting collective and organized influence on the social determinants of health, in addition to being recipients of care. Having access to appropriate health and mental health care when needed is a fundamental human right. Having a say over the manner in which care is provided, including partnership in decision making in care planning and ongoing care, has gained increasing support among rec

Active Learning and Professional Citizenship in Nursing Education: A Structural Account.

Active learning and professional citizenship are widely discussed in nursing education, yet the conditions under which they converge have not been theoretically specified. In this paper, we advance a structural account of that relation, drawing on deliberative theory, philosophy of education, and nursing scholarship. The relation we describe is one of shared enabling conditions rather than causal production: active learning and professional citizenship converge not because one produces the other, but because each depends on arrangements that require public justification through reasons, engage

Paradoxical bio-citizenship: Examining healthy eating from lay and professional perspectives.

In a society saturated with health messages, the concept of an eating disorder based on an obsession with healthy eating involving pathological behaviours and thoughts- "orthorexia nervosa"- presents a paradox, raising questions about extreme healthism and psychiatry's expanding reach into contemporary life. To explore this matter, we re-analysed data from six existing studies, including 56 interviews (individuals preoccupied with healthy eating; bodybuilders practising extreme healthy eating; health practitioners specialising in eating disorders; fitness instructors) - and anonymous eating di

Employees' Death Awareness and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) can improve immune system function through suppression of HIV-1 replication. However, paradoxical immune response may develop in some patients as a result of effective therapy followed by immune restoration. The phenomena is known as IRS, immune reconstitution syndrome/immune recovery syndrome. IRS can develop within weeks to months after cART is commenced and the time is related to the type of the disease. There are but scant reports concerning IRS-NHL (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) in HIV-1 positive subjects. We observed 4 (33%) cases of IRS-NHL out of 12

Atopic disease prevalence by nativity, citizenship, and years of residence in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Although atopic disease, including atopic dermatitis (AD), asthma, and allergic rhinitis, is less prevalent among immigrants than natives in developed nations, its prevalence is poorly characterized among US immigrants. In this study, we investigated the individual and joint effects of nativity, US citizenship, and duration of US residence on the prevalence of atopic disease among US adults. METHODS: We analyzed 25,597 US-born and 4,714 immigrant sample adults from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey. We generated nationally-representative prevalence estimates and fitted s

Navigating intimate trans citizenship while incarcerated in Australia and the United States.

Trans women incarcerated throughout the world have been described as "vulnerable populations" due to significant victimization, mistreatment, lack of gender-affirming care, and human rights violations, which confers greater risk of trauma, self-harm, and suicide compared with the general incarcerated population. Most incarceration settings around the world are segregated by the person's sex characteristics (i.e., male or female) and governed by strong cis and gender normative paradigms. This analysis seeks to better understand and appreciate how the "instructions" and the "authorities" that re

Biocultural citizenship and embodying exceptionalism: Biopolitics for sickle cell disease in Brazil.

In 2006, the committee that developed the National Health Policy for the Black Population (NHPBP) chose sickle cell disease as their "flag to demand health rights." The drafting of this policy was official recognition from the Ministry of Health for racial differences of its citizens in order to address certain inequalities in the form of racial health reparations. Through an ethnographic study which consisted of participant observation, life-story and semi-structured interviews, and surveys in the urban centers of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and Brasília between Novem

Engaging the citizenship of the homeless-a qualitative study of specialist primary care providers.

BACKGROUND: Homeless patients have complex health needs. They also often describe difficulty accessing and maintaining access to clinical services. Although engagement with health care has been explored from the patient perspective, little is known about how health care professionals conceptualize, assess and promote engagement with health care among homeless persons. AIM: To examine how health professionals working in services for homeless persons view their patients' engagement with health care and explore how these views influence their practice. METHODS: Semi-structured phone interviews

Citizenship and health insurance status predict glycemic management: NHANES data 2007-2016.

The prevalence of diabetes in United States (US) immigrants is higher than the general population. Non-citizenship and lack of health insurance have been associated with increased health risks including diabetes, but previous US studies were done in non-representative samples and did not examine the effect on glycemic management. The purpose of this study was to compare demographic, metabolic, and behavioral risk factors for increased blood glucose including citizenship and health insurance status, and determine predictors of poor glycemic management (A1C ≥ 8.0%). Logistic regression was used

Tuberculosis among newly arrived foreign spouses before obtaining citizenship, Taiwan, 2006-2011.

BACKGROUND: Taiwan's criterion for admissions of new immigrants is a normal chest X-ray (CXR). Subsequent tuberculosis (TB) screening for new foreign spouses is mandatory before acquiring citizenship. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the TB burden among new-entry foreign spouses and their close contacts. RESULTS: Of 768 new foreign spouses with TB, of whom 98.6% were female, 721 (94.0%) had come from South-East Asian countries (Viet Nam, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand) or China. Rates of TB (40.3-176.2 per 100 000/year) among newly emigrant wives aged 20-49 years were 1.7- to 7.3-fold higher tha

Social assistance and citizenship units: food and nutrition guidelines for menu planning.

This research deals with the development of dietary and nutrition guidelines for the planning and evaluation of menus in social assistance and citizenship units. The topic is especially important because there are currently no specific guidelines establishing the parameters for meal provision in these highly complex public facilities. The methodology included the collection of information on the institutional menu preparation and evaluation process in a Brazilian metropolis and a bibliographic review of recommendations for adopting and promoting an adequate and healthy diet in Brazil. Promoting User Involvement to Foster Technological Citizenship in the Digitizing Healthcare Domain.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly prominent role in healthcare technology, particularly in patient monitoring and diagnosis. While AI offers significant benefits, it raises concerns about the patient-provider relationship and key care values. To mitigate these risks and align technology with societal values, experts stress the importance of user involvement in technology development. However, input from patients or nurses during AI development remains uncommon. The rapidly digitizing healthcare thus demonstrates a context where technological citizenship is not yet thrivin

Vaccination coverage of adolescents: Results of a Defense and Citizenship Day-based survey.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccination coverage among French young adults is not routinely measured. Every French adolescent aged between 16 and 18years must take part in the Defense and Citizenship Day (French acronym JDC). We aimed to assess vaccination coverage among young adults for hepatitis B, group C meningococcus meningitis, human papillomavirus (HPV), and measles. We also aimed to assess the proportion of adolescents who received the pertussis booster between the age of 11 and 13years. METHODS: The survey took place from January 19th to 26th, 2015 at the JDC center of Rennes, France. Vaccination

The limitations of partial citizenship: health care institutions underpinned with heteronormative ideals.

Tensions between apparent rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning people and the continued prevalence of heteronormative health care practice emerged in research with older women who self-identified as lesbian. Having already faced considerable exclusionary institutional practices in their lives, these women expressed anticipatory dread of the erasure of their lives in residential or long-term care. Drawing on the framework of sexual citizenship, this article critiques the disjuncture between the legal reality and the lived reality of LGBTQ people and suggests that

Citizenship and education trajectories among children of immigrants: A transition-oriented sequence analysis.

During recent decades, the educational outcomes of the children of immigrants have been extensively studied, with a growing emphasis on the heterogeneity of the so-called second generation. Yet, the impact of host country citizenship on children's educational outcomes has only received limited attention so far, although children of immigrants do not get automatic birthright citizenship in most European countries. Focusing on the Netherlands, this paper compares educational trajectories among citizen and non-citizen children of immigrants. Register data and sequence analysis are used to map and

"Missing minorities" in blood donation: Rethinking blood procurement in Europe as a citizenship regime.

Although European blood collection organizations are currently obtaining sufficient and safe blood from the majority population, they report having difficulty recruiting first and second-generation immigrants from non-European countries. Most existing studies on these underrepresented groups, who have been coined the "missing minorities" in blood donation, have adopted an instrumental approach that focuses on the development of targeted recruitment strategies to overcome specific barriers to donation faced by members of these minorities. Although this approach does offer several short-term ben
