Citrobacter Causing Septic Arthritis: A Case Report.

The genus Citrobacter commonly found in water and soil as well as the intestinal and urinary tracts of animals and humans. Although Citrobacter infections are infrequently diagnosed in environmental contexts, the rising incidence of nosocomial manifestations underscores the importance of considering this organism in the differential diagnosis of hospital-acquired infections. We present a case of patient with septic arthritis of the shoulder who had been originally admitted for the management of acute-on-chronic congestive heart failure exacerbation and severe sepsis. On hospital day 1, joint a

New insights into Citrobacter freundii sepsis in neonates.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features of neonatal sepsis caused by Citrobacter freundii as well as the current status and treatment strategy for multi-drug resistance of infection with this bacterium. METHODS: Nine newborns were diagnosed with C. freundii sepsis between January 2014 and December 2017. We collated and analyzed a range of data for these nine patients, including general information, laboratory tests during infection, blood culture and treatment. RESULTS: One of the patients died after only 7 h of infection. In the remaining eight cases, thre

Citrobacter infections in a general hospital: characteristics and outcomes.

In this investigation, we sought to investigate the characteristics of Citrobacter spp. infections. A retrospective cohort study in a 700-bed, tertiary care, university hospital was carried out during the period from June 1994 to January 2006. Seventy-eight patients (70 adults) with Citrobacter spp. isolates were identified. C. freundii was more common (71.8%), followed by C. koseri (23.1%) and C. braakii (3.8%). The most common associated clinical syndromes were urinary tract infections (52.6% of cases, including eight cases of asymptomatic bacteriuria), as well as intra-abdominal (14.1%), su

First isolations of Levinea-Citrobacter cultures in Czechoslovakia.

Twenty-two strains corresponding by their biochemical properties to the genus Levinea - Citrobacter were isolated. Six of the strains were referred to the species Citrobacter diversus and 12 to C. freundii, whose properties are identical with those of L. malonatica and L. amalonatica, respectively. Four strains differed from Levinea organisms by some reactions, but were fully compatible with C. freundii (in the scheme of EWING and DAVIS); two of them utilized malonate. The taxonomic position of strains displaying the following biochemical properties: dextrose positive, indole positive, H2S neg

Spondylodiscitis caused by Citrobacter koseri: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Citrobacter species are ubiquitous environmental gram-negative bacilli that rarely cause severe infections in immunocompetent adults. Spondylodiscitis caused by Citrobacter koseri is an exceptionally rare clinical entity, with fewer than 15 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of community-acquired Citrobacter koseri spondylodiscitis to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic management of this unusual pathogen. Lineage, Antimicrobial Resistance and Virulence of Citrobacter spp.

Citrobacter spp. are opportunistic human pathogens which can cause nosocomial infections, sporadic infections and outbreaks. In order to determine the genetic diversity, in vitro virulence properties and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Citrobacter spp., 128 Citrobacter isolates obtained from human diarrheal patients, foods and environment were assessed by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), antimicrobial susceptibility testing and adhesion and cytotoxicity testing to HEp-2 cells. The 128 Citrobacter isolates were typed into 123 sequence types (STs) of which 101 were novel STs, and these ST

The role of Citrobacter in clinical disease of children: review.

Various species of Citrobacter may cause infections in neonates and immunocompromised hosts. Citrobacter koseri (formerly Citrobacter diversus) is best known as the cause of sepsis and meningitis leading to central nervous system (CNS) abscesses in neonates and young infants. Early onset and late-onset infections occur as for other neonatal bacterial infections. The majority of cases are sporadic, with no clear source of infection. A few have been confirmed to be vertically transmitted, and nosocomial outbreaks have occurred in neonatal care units. The pathophysiology is not well understood, b

Citrobacter rodentium Infection Inhibits Colonic P-glycoprotein Expression.

P-glycoprotein (Pgp/MDR1) serves as a biological barrier that protects intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) by transporting out xenobiotics and bacterial toxins. Decreased Pgp function and expression has been seen in mouse models of inflammatory colitis and also in patients with IBD. Pgp knockout mice spontaneously develop severe colitis, which is also seen in human patients with ulcerative colitis. However, whether Pgp is also altered in infectious colitis is not known. Citrobacter rodentium (CR), a murine pathogen has been shown to cause colonic hyperplasia and colitis in mice by attaching to

Nitrate reduction by Citrobacter diversus under aerobic environment.

A new aerobic denitrifier, Citrobacter diversus, was isolated from both nitrification and denitrification sludge. To monitor the variation in the concentration of nitrogen oxides, aerobic denitrification by C. diversus was carried out in a batch reactor. When the nitrate concentration was greater than 180 mg N l(-1), the nitrate reduction rate became stable. The effect of the C/N ratio on the denitrification activity was also investigated. The results showed that the optimum denitrification activity was obtained when the C/N ratio was 4-5. The range of the C/N ratio was higher than that for tr

Some molecular properties of Citrobacter diversus beta-lactamases.

Citrobacter diversus ULA-27, a clinical isolate showing a broad resistance pattern towards both penicillins and cephalosporins, produces chromosome encoded beta-lactamases. However, the strain remains susceptible to some cephamycins, imipenem, ceftazidime and tetracyclines. Crude bacterial extracts analyzed by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gels, revealed the presence of two main isoforms and some "satellite" bands focusing in the pH range 5.7-7.2. The isoform showing the pIs 6.8 and 6.2 were characterized as class "A" beta-lactamases (according to Ambler's classification) based on the

Peritumoral Citrobacter koseri abscess associated with parasagittal meningioma.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: This is the second report of a Citrobacter-associated brain abscess in an adult and the first report of its association with an intradural tumor. Excluding those associated with trauma, neurosurgical procedures, and proximity to the skull base, only seven other cases of abscesses associated with intracranial tumors have been published. Five of seven tumor-associated abscesses with a microbiological diagnosis involved gram-negative bacteria, a finding that may indicate a predilection of these microorganisms for intracranial tumors. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old

Citrobacter koseri Endophthalmitis Following Intravitreal Fluocinolone Acetonide Implant Injection.

Citrobacter koseri is a gram-negative bacillus primarily found in the gut. Exogenous endophthalmitis caused by C. koseri is exceedingly rare, with most reported cases occurring secondary to ocular trauma and resulting in poor visual outcomes. This report presents a case of a 76-year-old patient who developed endophthalmitis following a fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal injection administered for diabetic macular edema. A vitreous biopsy and intravitreal injection of vancomycin and ceftazidime were performed upon presentation. The vitreous sample culture was positive for C. koseri. The patien

Rehydration rescues Il22-/- mice from lethal Citrobacter rodentium infection.

Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is considered indispensable for host defence against Citrobacter rodentium, with 100% mortality of Il22-/- mice. While IL-22 promotes epithelial barrier integrity and production of antimicrobial peptides, the precise mechanism underlying lethality remains unclear. Here, we show that following C. rodentium infection Il22-/- mice succumb due to dehydration, rather than failure to control bacterial burden or regenerate damaged intestinal epithelium. Proteomic and gene expression analysis reveal greater enterocyte depletion in C. rodentium-infected Il22-/- mice, resulting in

Characterization of cytotoxic Citrobacter braakii isolated from human stomach.

Citrobacter braakii (C. braakii) is an anaerobic, gram-negative bacterium that has been isolated from the environment, food, and humans. Infection by C. braakii has been associated with acute mucosal inflammation in the intestine, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. However, the pathogenesis of C. braakii in the gastric mucosa has not yet been clarified. In this study, the bacterium was detected in 35.5% (61/172) of patients with chronic gastritis (CG) and was closely associated with the severity of mucosal inflammation. Citrobacter braakii P1 isolated from a patient with CG exhibited urease
