Retroperitoneal abscesses are very uncommon clinical conditions. The characteristically vague symptomatology of retroperitoneal abscess and the inherent difficulty of identifying retroperitoneal disease by physical examination contributed to these dismal therapeutic outcomes. We present an unusual case of lethal retroperitoneal abscess, caused by Citrobacter diversus(koseri), treated with surgical drainage. Citrobacter species have rarely been involved in deep tissue infection and there is no reported case of lethal retroperitoneal abscess caused by C. koseri. This case is the only reported ca

Citrobacter koseri is a gram-negative bacillius that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is an uncommon pathogen that typically causes meningitis and brain abscesses in children, however central nervous system (CNS) infections are rarely found in adults. We present a case of C. koseri meningitis in an immunocompetent adult secondary to intestinal micro-perforation caused by Strongyloides A 76-year-old man admitted for asthma exacerbation developed septic shock. A lumbar puncture revealed bacterial meningitis. Blood and CSF cultures grew Citrobacter koseri with identical susceptibiliti

Citrobacter koseri is a rare cause of septic arthritis in a native knee joint. We present the first recorded case of C. koseri septic arthritis in the native knee from a hematogenous spread resulting from a gastrointestinal illness, along with a review of the literature. A search of PubMed, Embase, OVID, and Google Scholar was conducted. Fifteen cases of musculoskeletal infection were identified, and of these, only six cases involved a septic joint and one case involved a septic knee. None of the recorded adult cases presented hematogenously without prior trauma. All of the cases achieved reso

Citrobacter koseri is a significant bacterial cause of community-acquired urinary tract infections in female college students. Given limited previous attention to genomic analysis and molecular epidemiology of this species, whole-genome sequencing was carried out for eight uropathogenic C. koseri clinical isolates. Six complete and two draft assemblies are presented. Genome organization was largely conserved between isolates, and comparative analysis with archived genomes suggests that more than 90% of C. koseri genes are conserved across the species. These isolates contained relatively few mo

In this report, we describe the case of a newborn with a rare neonatal infection caused by Citrobacter koseri, which followed a fulminant course. Unfortunately, despite prompt initiation of the sepsis treatment protocol by the health care team, the newborn developed significant complications that affected the central nervous system. As a result, palliative care was instituted, and brain death was declared on the 12th day of life, 6 days after the onset of the first symptoms of the infection. We discuss the epidemiology of C. koseri infection; the therapeutic management of sepsis, including the

Citrobacter koseri causes opportunistic infections in various organs. We herein report an 84-year-old man with diabetes mellitus who presented to our hospital with left hip pain and walking difficulty. Computed tomography showed an extensive abscess with gas production, mainly in the left retroperitoneal space, caused by C. koseri infection. Despite daily cleaning of the wound and antimicrobial therapy (with surgical drainage), the patient developed repeated pneumonia and small bowel hemorrhaging caused by disseminated intravascular coagulation and died on day 65 of hospitalization. Overall, r

We present a 2 month-old female infant admitted to the hospital with macrocephaly as main clinical sign, irritability, and vomiting. The computer tomography scanning showed a cystic frontal image with contralateral ventricle displacement. Surgical intervention was performed. Purulent material culture was positive for Citrobacter koseri (diversus). Cerebrospinal fluid culture was negative. The infant was treated with antibiotics for 6 weeks with a good outcome. She presented postsurgical hydrocephaly and required ventriculoperitoneal valve.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses are very rarely diagnosed in neonates, but if present, they are associated with a high risk of severe complications and mortality. In neonates, brain abscesses can be detected on transfontanelle ultrasonography, in which they appear as hyperechogenic lesions surrounded by a hypoechogenic border.
CASE REPORT: We present a female neonate, born in the 28th week of gestation, with birth weight of 950 grams, who was born in an ambulance by spontaneous vaginal vertex delivery. No signs of infection were present until the 35th day of hospitalization, when a sudden and ser

BACKGROUND: Citrobacter koseri has not been associated to infection caused by blood component transfusions.
CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old female patient presented sudden chills, dyspnoea, and tachycardia during a transfusion from a unit of packed red blood cells. Citrobacter koseri was isolated in the two sample collected from the patient and from the content of the packed red blood cells.
RESULTS: We report a case of bacteraemia due to a transfusion of contaminated red blood cells.
CONCLUSION: C. koseri should be taken into account in bacteraemias caused by transfusion of blood components.

Early-onset neonatal sepsis is usually a multisystem fulminant illness with prominent respiratory symptoms, and typically the infant has acquired the organism from the maternal genital tract during the intrapartum period. In this article, we report a rare case of dizygotic twins where each individual suffered early-onset sepsis caused by a different pathogen. Group B streptococcal (GBS) sepsis was diagnosed in twin A 1 day after birth; sepsis and meningitis caused by Citrobacter koseri was diagnosed in twin B at the age of the 4 days. The mother developed pre-eclampsia and fever and the twins

A 54-year-old male patient was seen in clinic for ocular pain and decreased vision in the right eye with duration of two days. He underwent a cataract operation for his right eye 12 years ago, then a sclera-fixated secondary intraocular implantation and pars plana vitrectomy three years ago due to intraocular lens dislocation. At the initial visit, his visual acuity was restricted to the perception of hand motion. An edematous cornea, cells, flare with hypopyon, and exposed suture material at were observed at the six o'clock direction by slit lamp. Vitreous opacity was noted from B-scan ultras

Citrobacter koseri is a Gram-negative, multidrug-resistant bacterium linked to severe infections in immunocompromised individuals and neonates. It is especially linked to sepsis and meningitis, which often lead to CNS abscesses in newborns. Most infections happen randomly, but some are passed down from parent to child. There have also been reports of hospital-acquired outbreaks in neonatal care units. Even though diagnostic and treatment methods have improved, the death rate is still high. About one in three affected babies dies, and almost half of them suffer long-term neurological damage. As

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a life-threatening necrotizing urinary tract infection requiring prompt antimicrobial therapy and source control. An 80-year-old man with diabetes mellitus presented to our emergency department with septic shock. Computed tomography (CT) showed extensive gas formation and abscess cavities extending beyond the right renal parenchyma (Huang-Tseng class 3B) with an obstructing distal ureteral stone. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy and CT-guided percutaneous catheter drainage were initiated. Citrobacter koseri was isolated from drainage fluid, blood, and

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a condition with low prevalence but high mortality rates within intensive care units. Microbiologically, most cases are attributed to Gram-positive cocci, while Gram-negative bacilli are less commonly involved. This case report describes a patient with IE caused by Citrobacter koseri (C. koseri) with secondary bacteremia due to blunt testicular trauma and epididymitis. We conducted a review of the literature to assess the clinical and associated risk factors of this underreported condition. Elderly and urinary tract infections could be associated with this entity

Citrobacter koseri (formerly classified as Citrobacter diversus) is a gram-negative bacillus (GNB) that occurs as an opportunistic pathogen in neonates and immunocompromised patients. Citrobacter species have been implicated in nosocomial settings leading to infections involving the urinary tract, respiratory tract, liver, biliary tract, meninges, and even in rarer conditions-blood stream infection and infective endocarditis (IE). Gram-negative bacilli are responsible for 3% to 4% of all IE cases and have been traditionally associated with intravenous drug users. Patients with non-HACEK (speci

Subdural empyema (SDE) is a life-threatening condition. Reports on SDE are scarce. We report the case of a 96-year-old immunocompromised patient on steroids for pemphigus who received repeat burrhole trephination and antibiotics to treat SDE. We identified Citrobacter koseri as the causative pathogen. Our patient made a good recovery at 2 months. We conclude that surgical treatment may yield a favorable outcome after cranial SDE, even in an elderly immunocompromised patient.

Citrobacter koseri is an emerging Gram-negative bacterial pathogen, which causes urinary tract infections. We isolated and characterized a novel S16-like myovirus CKP1 (vB_CkoM_CkP1), infecting C. koseri. CkP1 has a host range covering the whole C. koseri species, i.e., all strains that were tested, but does not infect other species. Its linear 168,463-bp genome contains 291 coding sequences, sharing sequence similarity with the Salmonella phage S16. Based on surface plasmon resonance and recombinant green florescence protein fusions, the tail fiber (gp267) was shown to decorate C. koseri cell

Spilled gallstones during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) are common. Lost gallstones can lead to complications such as intra-abdominal abscesses, which can occur days, months, or even years after the procedure. Citrobacter koseri belongs to the family of Enterobacteriaceae. It is a low-virulence pathogen; however, it is linked to infections of the urinary tract and abdomen. We report the case of a 70-year-old diabetic male who presented with C. koseri- associated subhepatic abscess. Two years prior, he had emphysematous cholecystitis and liver abscess caused by C. koseri. During his LC, gal
