[Classification and prognosis of supravesical urothelioma with the new TNM classification].

We report on 149 patients with supravesical urothelioma (transitional cell carcinoma of the upper urinary tract) treated in our hospital during the years 1967-1991. The introduction shows the distribution of sex and age as well as the localization of the tumor. Main topic of this paper is a new definition of the clinical pathology of supravesical urothelioma by means of the TNM classification published 1987. Based on the pathological pioneer work of P. Hermanek our results are as follows: during the first diagnosis pT3 predominates with 30.2%, followed by pT1 with 25.5% and pTa, pT1 and pT4 wi

Classification of hydrocephalus: critical analysis of classification categories and advantages of "Multi-categorical Hydrocephalus Classification" (Mc HC).

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocephalus is a complex pathophysiology with disturbed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. There are numerous numbers of classification trials published focusing on various criteria, such as associated anomalies/underlying lesions, CSF circulation/intracranial pressure patterns, clinical features, and other categories. However, no definitive classification exists comprehensively to cover the variety of these aspects. The new classification of hydrocephalus, "Multi-categorical Hydrocephalus Classification" (Mc HC), was invented and developed to cover the entire aspects of hydro

Classification of intraarticular calcaneal fractures: comparison of two classification systems.

PURPOSE: Accurately classifying displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs) is essential for orthopedic surgeons to choose optimal treatment methods and provide results evaluation and communication. Many authors studying used Sanders classification reported moderate intra- and interobserver reliability. Taking the software opportunity of 3D virtual exarticulation, Goldzak updated French tri-dimensional Utheza classification, providing an alternative framework for classifying DIACFs. The aim of this study was to compare the intra- and interobserver reliability of Sanders versus Goldza

Classification of normal sagittal spine alignment: refounding the Roussouly classification.

PURPOSE: Although the Roussouly classification of common variants in spinal sagittal alignment is well accepted, no studies have implemented it in an asymptomatic adult population. In addition, no study investigated the radiographic features of asymptomatic patients with an anteverted pelvis. The aim of this prospective radiographic study of 296 asymptomatic adults without spinal pathology was to investigate how the Roussouly classification could include the anteverted pelvis concept. METHODS: Pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), and the lumbar parameters lumbar lordosi

Ectopic varices: anatomical classification, hemodynamic classification, and hemodynamic-based management.

Ectopic varices are dilated splanchnic (mesoportal) veins/varicosities and/or are dilated portosystemic collaterals that can occur along the entire gastrointestinal tract outside the common pathologic variceal sites. Ectopic varices are complex and highly variable entities that are not fully understood. Ectopic varices represent 2%-5% of a gastrointestinal tract variceal bleeding. However, ectopic varices have a 4-fold increased risk of bleeding when compared with esophageal varices and can have a mortality rate as high as 40%. All treatment strategies and techniques have been utilized in mana

Classification of asthma.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that results, physiologically, in hyperreactivity and, clinically, in recurrent episodes of wheezing, chest tightness, or coughing. Airway inflammation, smooth-muscle contraction, epithelial sloughing, mucous hypersecretion, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and mucosal edema contribute to the underlying pathophysiology of asthma. Diagnostic tests such as methacholine or mannitol challenges or spirometry (pre- and postbronchodilator responses) help to identify such underlying pathophysiology via assessments of bronchial hyperreactivity and

Classification of myositis.

The idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs; also known as myositis) are a heterogeneous group of disorders in which a common feature is chronic inflammation of skeletal muscle, leading to muscle weakness. Other organs are frequently affected in IIMs, such as the skin, joints, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and heart, contributing to morbidity and mortality. Currently, IIMs are most often subclassified into polymyositis, dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis, but this subclassification has limitations as these subgroups often have overlapping clinical and histopathological features, and

[Classification of glomerulopathies].

Glomerular diseases may be classified as acute or chronic, primary or secondary, hereditary or acquired, proliferative or non-proliferative etc. The most commonly used is the classification according to the histopathological finding. For certain types of glomerulonephritides histopathological image, as well as clinical presentation, may vary widely. A while ago there was no classification based on the pathogenesis of certain types of glomerular diseases. However, as scientists ellucidate the underlying pathogenetic mechanism, current classifications change. The latter is best shown at the exam

Classification of choledochocele.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Choledochocele is a rare abnormality of cystic or diverticular dilatation of the terminal intramural portion of the common bile duct. Because its anatomic form does not fit the criteria for pancreaticobiliary maljunction, reflux of bile or pancreatic juice has not been discussed in relation to choledochocele. Considering the flow of bile and pancreatic juice, the authors developed a new classification of choledochocele, and investigated associated pancreaticobiliary diseases. METHODOLOGY: We reviewed 82 cases of choledochocele, and classified them into three groups on cholang

The classification of phocomelia.

We studied 24 patients with 44 phocomelic upper limbs. Only 11 limbs could be grouped in the classification system of Frantz and O' Rahilly. The non-classifiable limbs were further studied and their characteristics identified. It is confirmed that phocomelia is not an intercalary defect.

[Classification of lymphedema].

Classification of lymphedema is debated, because authors don't agree with the disordered physiology. Kinmonth divided all cases into primary and secondary lymphedema. Three types of primary lymphedema have been recognized: congenital, precox and tarda. Secondary lymphedema develops as a consequence of disruption or obstruction of the lymphatic pathways. Iatrogenic lymphedema are caused by surgery and/or radiation therapy. Post-infectious lymphedema are mainly caused by filariasis in tropical areas, and by cellulitis in occidental areas. Neoplastic disease (breast, prostatic cancer, Kaposi's sa

Classification of clubfoot.

Clubfeet must be classified according to severity to obtain reference points, assess the efficacy of orthopaedic treatment, and analyze the operative results objectively. A scale of 0-20 was established on the basis of four essential parameters: equinus in the sagittal plane, varus deviation in the frontal plane and derotation around the talus of the calcaneo-forefoot (CFF) block and adduction of forefoot on hindfoot in the horizontal plane. Four grades of clubfeet can be individualized: (a) Benign feet so-called "soft-soft feet," grade I, similar to postural feet, with a score of 5 to 1 (thes

Classification of vasculitis.

A working classification of necrotizing vasculitis based on size of the affected vessel is proposed. The classification proposed by Gilliam and Fink in 1976 is a basis for the current proposal. A revised working classification of vasculitis is presented. Small vessel necrotizing vasculitis and larger vessel necrotizing vasculitis categories are further subdivided. Improved understanding of the basic science aspects of vasculitis will hopefully give rise to a better consensus on the classification of vasculitis.

Pathology and classification.

The most important change seen during the early and active phases of this disease is an overgrowth of the articular cartilage with a variable degree of infarction within the bony epiphysis. This accounts for the variable nature of the disease that is observed clinically. Treatment cannot alter the degree of bony infarction present; it can only attempt to control the growth disturbance that is present by maintaining the mobility of the femoral head and hence preventing the adduction contracture, which is the essential prerequisite of serious femoral head deformity.

Classification of anxiety.

Current psychiatric classifications of anxiety are examined critically. In the European literature a specific cluster of symptoms is diagnostic of anxiety neurosis and their subsidiary classification is based on precipitating factors and duration of symptoms. In the American literature, exemplified by DSM-III, greater emphasis is placed on symptomatic classification and panic is given separate diagnostic status, both alone and in conjunction with agoraphobia. In both classifications generalized anxiety is at the bottom of a diagnostic hierarchy so that all other symptoms take precedence. It is

[Classification of immunodeficiency].

The immunodeficiency, at present an important complex of research, can be classified in 4 main groups. Primary forms can be separated from secondary ones, a third group of interactional type from a fourth one of compensatory character. We suggest a new classification based on a common point of view, which avoids terms as "common variable immunodeficiency" and allows corrections by the results of further research.
