Purpose To analyze claustrophobia during magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and to explore the potential of the 26-item claustrophobia questionnaire (CLQ) (range, 0-4) as a screening tool in patients scheduled for MR imaging. Materials and Methods The study received institutional review board approval, and patients in the CLQ cohort provided informed consent. A total of 6520 consecutive patients were included. Overall, 4288 patients completed the CLQ before MR imaging (CLQ cohort), and 2232 patients underwent MR imaging without having completed the CLQ (non-CLQ cohort). Claustrophobic events were

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of MRI-related claustrophobia and prematurely terminated MRI (ptMRI) examinations due to claustrophobia in a large-scale cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hospital's computerized radiology information system (RIS) was retrospectively analyzed for all 1.5-Tesla MRI examinations and reports during the year 2004. Data collected included demographic information, body part examined, known claustrophobia, and whether the examination was prematurely terminated. All information available on the MRI examinations and the patient-based data (i.e., excluding any

Standing participants were passively restrained and exposed to oscillating visual motion. Thirty-nine percent of participants reported motion sickness. Despite passive restraint, participants exhibited displacements of the center of pressure, and prior to the onset of motion sickness the evolution of these displacements differed between participants who later became sick and those who did not. Claustrophobia occurred during restraint, but only among participants who became motion sick. The results are consistent with the postural instability theory of motion sickness. We discuss the possible r

Fear of suffocation and fear of restriction are thought to underlie claustrophobia and can be assessed with the Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ; Radomsky et al., 2001). A first study tested the psychometric properties of a Dutch version of the CLQ. Students (N=363) completed a Dutch translation of the CLQ and a set of other questionnaires assessing other specific fears, anxiety or depression. Results confirmed the two-factor structure and showed that the Dutch version of the CLQ has good psychometric properties. A second study tested the predictive validity of the Dutch CLQ. Participants (N=

As psychological problems are frequent in SCT patients we report on a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia, claustrophobia and depression. The successful allogeneic stem cell transplant of this patient in a reverse isolation setting required intensive interdisciplinary hematological, psychological and psychiatric collaboration. Psychopharmacologically the patient was treated with lorazepam 1 mg at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. and after crisis on day +6, and 2.5 mg twice daily i.v. until one day before discharge (total 20 doses). Psychological counseling followed a cognitive-behavioural approach includi

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is well known to be a source of anxiety for patients, commonly appearing as claustrophobia. One of the main reasons for this is due to the physical nature of the scanner itself. Despite technological improvements, there is lacking evidence on whether these improvements have resulted in a reduction in claustrophobia and anxiety in the clinical setting. Background anxiety associated with the current COVID-19 pandemic may also have shown an increase in prevalence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to survey MRI radiographers on their perspectives

STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the levels of psychological distress in patients with back pain who expressed claustrophobia at the time of their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, compared with sex and age-matched normal controls who did not exhibit claustrophobia. The secondary aim was to document the level of disability and intervention rates in this group.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Psychosocial factors influence the outcomes of low back pain treatment with psychological distress being associated with poorer surgical outcomes in patie

A conceptualization of claustrophobia [Rachman, S., & Taylor, S. (1993). Analyses of claustrophobia. Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 7, 281-291] was evaluated in the context of magnetic resonance imaging. One hundred eleven students responded to questionnaires that quantified fear of suffocation, fear of restriction, and sensitivity to anxiety symptoms. Sixty-four of them were then exposed to a mock magnetic resonance imaging assessment; maximum subjective fear during the mock assessment was self-reported, behavioral reactions to the mock assessment were characterized, and heart rates before and

The overall purpose of this investigation was to examine heterogeneity among specific phobias. In particular, the goals were to compare features of fear responding between individuals fearful of claustrophobic situations and individuals fearful of spiders/snakes, and to compare their response to hyperventilation challenges. By so doing, specific predictions were tested in relation to a conceptual model of exteroceptive and interoceptive fear cues. Using a nonclinical sample, 19 subjects with spider/snake phobias, 18 nonphobics, and 9 subjects with claustrophobias were exposed on two separate o

Hoarding disorder is characterized by difficulty discarding objects and excessive clutter. The relationship between hoarding and claustrophobia, reactions to severely cluttered spaces, and clutter preferences are all areas that are yet to be investigated. The present study used a novel virtual reality (VR) platform to examine these domains. Two groups (i.e., with hoarding disorder, n = 36; without hoarding disorder, n = 40) similar in age and gender were recruited from the community. There were no differences in subjective or physiological reactivity to increasing VR clutter levels. The hoardi

Phobias are among the few intensely fearful experiences we regularly have in our everyday lives, yet the brain basis of phobic responses remains incompletely understood. Here we describe the case of a 71-year-old patient with a typical clinicoanatomical syndrome of semantic dementia led by selective (predominantly right-sided) temporal lobe atrophy, who showed striking amelioration of previously disabling claustrophobia following onset of her cognitive syndrome. We interpret our patient's newfound fearlessness as an interaction of damaged limbic and autonomic responsivity with loss of the cogn

Research suggests that Claustrophobia, defined as the fear of enclosed spaces, may be better conceptualized as two separate, but related fears: (1) the fear of suffocation, and (2) the fear of restriction. The Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ) is a self-report measure designed to assess these two fears. The original English version of the CLQ has demonstrated excellent psychometric properties. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a French version of the CLQ for use in clinical and research settings and to replicate the psychometric findings of previous investigations of the Englis

INTRODUCTION: Claustrophobia is a major problem experienced by some patients referred for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This results in significant costs and delays to healthcare service provision due to appointment cancellations or patients' inability to complete MRI examinations. Radiographers may use several strategies to effectively manage patients with claustrophobia during MRI. This study aimed to determine radiographer's confidence in managing patients with claustrophobia and evaluate the perceived effectiveness of the intervention approaches employed.
METHODS: With institutional e

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether MR scanners with acoustic noise reduction and a short magnetic bore reduce the rate of claustrophobic reactions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a cohort study in an outpatient setting, enrolling a total of 55,734 consecutive patients referred for MRI of any part of the body based on a clinical indication. Imaging was performed using a conventional MR scanner (42,998 patients) and a recently developed MR scanner (12,736 patients) with 97% acoustic noise reduction and a short bore. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for the nonrandomized d

OBJECTIVE: Up to 37% of patients undergoing MR imaging examinations experience moderate to severe levels of anxiety that necessitate the termination of the procedure in 5-10% of patients. Although the clinical use of MR imaging has increased, effective procedures to handle claustrophobia are lacking. We evaluated the effectiveness of intranasally administered midazolam spray in preventing claustrophobic responses of patients undergoing MR imaging.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients scheduled for MR imaging were included in this prospective study. Anxiety and sedation of patients were e

Claustrophobia is associated with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) due to the nature of the technique and lengthy examination times. We report the incidence and treatment of claustrophobia in a prospective study on the use of intravenous (IV) and oral diazepam for CMR from August 1997 to June 1999 in 1754 adult patients referred for clinical (1226) and research (528) purposes. Patients under 16 yr of age and adults with learning difficulties were excluded. The initial refusal rate of clinical and research patients was 4.2% (54 clinical and 19 research). Positive airway pressure (PAP) associated claustrophobia is common among obstructive sleep apnea patients and plays a prominent role in low adherence and treatment failure. As there are no evidence-based interventions for PAP-associated claustrophobia, the objective of the present research is to pilot test Mindfulness-based Exposure for PAP-associated Claustrophobia, in sleep apnea adults that present with treatment non-adherence and claustrophobia. This approach combines Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction with exposure-based treatment components to target this treatment-associated claustropho

BACKGROUND: All traumatic events threaten an individual's sense of safety. However, a distinctive feature of disasters is that they threaten not only the safety of individuals but also that of the entire community. Trauma associated with disasters can affect people in many different ways.
AIM: This study aimed to determine the levels of posttraumatic stress and the prevalence of claustrophobia among earthquake survivors following the İzmir earthquake in Turkey and to assess their psychological resilience.
METHOD: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2022 using a known-popu
