Bridging Faith and Palliative Care: Catholic Clergy and Community Engagement in the United States.

Spiritual care is a core component of high-quality palliative care, yet persistent gaps remain between health care systems, professional chaplaincy, and patients' home religious communities. While patients and families frequently desire spiritual support at the end of life, evidence suggests that spiritual needs are often insufficiently addressed by medical teams and inconsistently supported by local congregations. Moreover, spiritual care delivered by community clergy when disconnected from contemporary palliative care principles may, in some cases, unintentionally contribute to delayed hospi

The impact of clergy sexual abuse on spirituality and health: A systematic scoping review of the literature.

Sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy or other Church leaders can cause harm to the spirituality of people who are subject to this abuse, which also has impacts on their overall health. We conducted a systematic scoping review to examine how Spiritual Harm in this context is operationalized in the literature with specific reference to the Catholic Church. Literature searches were conducted across Academic Search Complete, Informit Database, ProQuest, Web of Science and Google Scholar in 2022 and updated throughout 2023. Eligible studies were published between 2002-2022 and included peer reviewed

A brief report on the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among United Methodist clergy.

OBJECTIVE: This brief report examines the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among United Methodist Church clergy in North Carolina. Clergy serve the mental, spiritual, emotional, and material needs of their congregants and communities, making it important to understand whether childhood adversity is associated with occupational selection as in other caregiving occupations. METHOD: Using data from the 2023 wave of the Clergy Health Initiative Longitudinal Survey and the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, we compared the prevalence of ACEs among clergy to a

Clergy Attitudes About Ways to Support the Mental Health of Sexual and Gender Minorities.

This pilot study explored clergy members' attitudes about ways to support the mental health needs of sexual and gender minorities (SGM; e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people). Participants (N = 86, 46% female, 26% SGMs) were US clergy members from a variety of religious faiths but mostly were leaders in Christian faith communities in the greater Chicago area. Clergy participants completed quantitative and qualitative items asking what types of resources (e.g., workshops, websites, consultations, or testimonies) and delivery format (online or in-person) they perceived as most hel

"It's a Complicated Web": An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Cameroonian and Nigerian Clergy Understanding of Intimate Partner Violence.

Clergy's understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) underpins the support they provide to Christian women affected by IPV. However, the understanding of intimate partner violence by Cameroonian and Nigerian clergy living in England is unknown. This article explores their understanding of intimate partner violence through remote nine semi-structured interviews. The results showed that clergy understood that the intersection of individual, Christian, and cultural beliefs around marriage and acculturation factors causes intimate partner violence. They acknowledged a lack of adequate knowled

Effects of Psilocybin on Religious and Spiritual Attitudes and Behaviors in Clergy from Various Major World Religions.

BACKGROUND: Although historical writings, anthropological accounts, and experimental studies document associations between psilocybin use and religion, no prospective experimental study has investigated how the effects of psilocybin are experienced and interpreted by religious clergy. This exploratory study evaluated the overall safety and the acute and enduring effects of psilocybin in clergy. METHODS: Participants were psychedelic-naïve clergy from various major world religions. A randomized, parallel group, waitlist control design was used to assess the effects of two supported psilocybin

African-American clergy's perceptions of the leading health problems in their communities and their role in supporting parishioners' health.

This article is a report on a survey of Southern California pastors to learn of their perceptions of the leading health problems in their congregations. Participants (N=41) identified stress, overweight, and obesity as the top three health indicators that effect the health of their congregations. Tobacco use and substance abuse were listed among the top five. From a list of health problems, pastors felt that from the pulpit they could impact parishioners responsible sexual behavior most. Pastors expressed their opinions about the reasons for certain maladies and addictions. The findings indica

Ministry-Related Burnout and Stress Coping Mechanisms Among Assemblies of God-Ordained Clergy in Minnesota.

Clergy members suffering from burnout face both personal and professional complications. This study assessed occupational burnout and stress coping mechanisms among ministers affiliated with the Assemblies of God, a denomination that has received little attention in previous burnout-related studies. A cross-sectional design was employed using two instruments with acceptable psychometric properties. Approximately 65 % of those surveyed were either suffering from burnout or on the verge of burnout. Statistical differences in coping mechanism use were found between those who were and were not exp

Clergy-Perpetrated Sexual Abuse in Ghana: A Media Content Analysis of Survivors, Offenders, and Offence Characteristics.

While there are no official data and published studies on clergy-perpetrated sexual abuse (CPSA) from Ghana, local media reports continue to show worrying trends of the phenomenon. We drew on 73 media reports from January 2000 to March 2019, to describe the offence characteristics and profiles of the perpetrators and survivors of CPSA in Ghana. The findings showed females aged 10-19 as predominant survivors. The perpetrators were all males found guilty of lone rape, incest, defilement, indecent assault, sodomy, attempted rape, or gang rape. A preventive measure could involve streamlining the r

Gaps in preparedness of clergy and healthcare providers to address mental health needs of returning service members.

To elucidate gaps in the preparedness of clergy and healthcare providers to care for service members (SM) with deployment-related mental health needs. Participants identified clinically relevant symptoms in a standardized video role play of a veteran with deployment-related mental health needs and discussed their preparedness to deal with SM. Clergy members identified suicide and depression most often, while providers identified difficulty sleeping, low energy, nightmares and irritability. Neither clergy nor providers felt prepared to minister to or treat SM with traumatic brain injury. Throug

Suicidal Ideation Among Students at a United States Seminary: The "Wounded Healer" and Implications for Clergy Mental Health.

Analogous to other "helping professions," clergy often experience a higher prevalence of adverse mental health outcomes than the general population. However, it remains unclear whether this elevated risk can be attributed to work-related factors (e.g., high emotional demand and burnout) or experiences prior to entry into ministry. This study compares suicidal ideation (SI) among seminarians at matriculation to a weighted national sample and examines SI at multiple points during their degree program using repeated cross-sectional samples (n = 463 at matriculation, n = 421 at mid-program, and n

Paraphilias among Roman Catholic priests: what we know, and do not know, about sexual clergy-abusers of minors.

The issue of sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church is widely discussed in the media. Nevertheless, the term ‛priest-pedophile'has been used inaccurately to identify perpetrators. There is very little research directly dealing with this group of offenders among Catholic clergy, and we do not yet have any theory that would adequately explain this type of behavior. Attempts to psychologically characterize priests who sexually abuse minors have brought limited success so far. The purpose of this article is to present the most important issues and clinical dilemmas related to the diagnosis

Eco-anxiety, Psychology, and Theological Beliefs About Creation Among Clergy and Lay People in the Church of England.

Interest in eco-anxiety is growing rapidly, partly for therapeutic reasons and partly because it may be a motivation for pro-environmental behaviours. There is little study of how religious identities or church traditions and specific theological beliefs are related to eco-anxiety. This cross-sectional survey of 3240 clergy and laity from the Church of England explored the relationships between eco-anxiety, psychological dispositions, church tradition, and specific theological beliefs about creation. Eco-anxiety was measured using a subset of items from the Hogg Eco-Anxiety Scale. The number o

Exploring the Meanings of Posttraumatic Growth in Spanish Survivors of Clergy-Perpetrated Child Sexual Abuse: A Phenomenological Approach.

A healing and recovery perspective related to child sexual abuse (CSA) has gained attention in the past two decades, a concept that accurately refers to the process is posttraumatic growth (PTG). Scarce empirical research on PTG in clergy-perpetrated CSA survivors shows evidence of the presence of growth after the abusive experience and a tendency to create accounts of trauma as a way to heal. The general aim of the study is to explore the experiences and meanings of PTG as lived by survivors of clergy-perpetrated CSA. Seven clergy-perpetrated CSA survivors were interviewed with semi-structure

Engaging the AQ10 to Predict Professional Burnout or Poor Work-Related Psychological Wellbeing Among Anglican Clergy in Wales.

The ten-item Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ10) is a self-report instrument originally designed to identify referrals for professional diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Recent studies suggest that this instrument may also be tapping more generalised affective disorders. Working with this interpretation, this study examines the predictive power of the AQ10 to account for additional variance, after personal and personality factors have been taken into account, on the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory. Data provided by 220 Anglican clergy serving in Wales demonstrated that 8.6

Our Father who art in prison: Conviction and rehabilitation for Australian Catholic clergy who are child sexual offenders.

In light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, this article analyses the custodial sentences of 143 Australian Catholic clergy. The majority of these sentences were for convictions for indecent assault for which the median sentence was two years' imprisonment. It is doubtful whether the Australian community would consider such sentences as adequate, particularly where offences were against children. Current Australian legislation allows for ongoing long-term sanctions, including judicial orders for chemical castration, to be imposed on convicted sex offenders, especial

Reframing Obesity as Collective Vulnerability in Black Churches in The USA: Implications for Clergy Leadership, Health Equity, and Pastoral Identity.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and intensified longstanding racial health inequities in the USA, disproportionately affecting African American communities with high burdens of chronic disease. This study examines how African American clergy in Houston, Texas, interpreted and responded to the convergence of COVID-19 and obesity-related vulnerability within their congregations, and how these conditions reshaped theological meaning, pastoral identity, and health-related leadership within Black church contexts. Using a hermeneutic interpretive phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were con

Techniques of Neutralization and Persistent Sexual Abuse by Clergy: A Content Analysis of Priest Personnel Files From the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

The sexual abuse problem in the Catholic Church has received considerable attention by the media in recent years and growing attention from empirical researchers. Despite this growth, there is a lack of theoretical research that uses neutralization techniques to examine clergy offending. Using Sykes and Matza's theory, this study examines the techniques of neutralization used by accused priests in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Priests' personnel files, which were made publicly available by the Archbishop of Milwaukee in July 2013, were analyzed retrospectively through a qualitative content ana

The role of African-American clergy in providing informal services to drug users in the rural South: preliminary ethnographic findings.

To date, no ethnographic studies of the role of African-American clergy in providing informal services to drug users in the rural South have been reported. We use qualitative interviews with 15 African-American ministers and 26 African-American drug users in Arkansas' Mississippi River Delta region to explore this issue. All drug users reported significant religiosity, and 9 had discussed drug problems with clergy. Every minister had provided assistance to at least one drug user or their family during the previous year, including: direct counseling; referrals to treatment programs; aiding nego

The chapel and the operating room: the struggle of Roman Catholic clergy, physicians, and believers with the dilemmas of obstetric surgery, 1800-1900.

By 1800, the Roman Catholic Church and organized medicine faced the dilemma of how to resolve cases of obstructed births. American physicians usually practiced destructive operations, like craniotomy, in an attempt to save the lives of mothers. The church allowed such operations after the death of the infant. A new technique of surgery, the cesarean operation, offered hope that both patients would survive childbirth. Medical progress, and an emerging Catholic belief that the fetus was human, prompted Catholic physicians to advocate the new operation, and stirred a renewed debate among European
