Modelling the impact of climate on cholera: a case study of Kolkata.

Cholera is highly climate sensitive, however previous attempts to model its future under climate change have been limited to statistical analyses. Mechanistic models are an essential addition because they permit a deeper understanding of the complex feedback loops involved in infectious disease transmission, allowing for better modelling of potential scenarios such as interventions or changes in pathogen dynamics. We compare four mathematical models with differing assumptions of climate sensitivity and fit them to a cholera dataset from Kolkata, India using MCMC. We then use bias-corrected cli

A dynamic, climate-driven model of Rift Valley fever.

Outbreaks of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in eastern Africa have previously occurred following specific rainfall dynamics and flooding events that appear to support the emergence of large numbers of mosquito vectors. As such, transmission of the virus is considered to be sensitive to environmental conditions and therefore changes in climate can impact the spatiotemporal dynamics of epizootic vulnerability. Epidemiological information describing the methods and parameters of RVF transmission and its dependence on climatic factors are used to develop a new spatio-temporal mathematical model that simu

Predicting the global risk of chikungunya virus under climate change using ensemble species distribution models.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is expanding vector-borne disease ranges, yet Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) risk projections remain limited by single-model uncertainty and lack of vector integration. CHIKV, transmitted by Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, threatens 1.3 billion people globally, necessitating robust spatiotemporal risk assessment. METHODS: Using hierarchical ensemble modeling in Biomod2, we first projected vector distributions based on 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation, then integrated vector suitability as biological predictors for CHIKV under 16 CMIP6 scenarios (4 SSPs × 4 GCMs,

A climate impact attribution of historical rice yields in Sri Lanka using three crop models.

Sri Lanka's rice systems are subject to low yield events that threaten national food security. Extreme climate events during the cropping season are the main cause, but whether human-induced climate change has contributed to low yield events is an open question. Here, we present an impact attribution analysis that quantifies the effect of climate change to the average yield in 1981-2019 and the low yield event that occurred in 2017 using factual and counterfactual climate model simulations as inputs to three process-based crop models, DSSAT, APSIM and CYGMA. All of the crop models consistently

Climate change and the potential global distribution of Agrobacterium tumefaciens: a MaxEnt modeling approach for current and future climate scenarios.

Climate change is fundamentally altering the geographic ranges of plant-pathogenic microorganisms, with profound implications for global food security and agricultural sustainability. Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the gram-negative soil bacterium responsible for crown gall disease in over 140 genera of dicotyledonous plants, is among the most economically significant phytopathogens worldwide, yet its macroecological distribution under current and projected future climates has never been rigorously characterised. Here, we apply the Maximum Entropy algorithm (MaxEnt) to 415 quality-filtered georefe

Delphi consensus validation of an integrated climate sensitive diabetes management model for climate vulnerable health systems in Iran.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is rising rapidly in Iran, where climate-related hazards such as heatwaves, sand and dust storms, and disruptions to food and medicine supply chains challenge continuity and quality of care. We sought to validate a climate-sensitive, health system-oriented management model for T2DM using a Delphi consensus process. Eighteen experts in diabetes, noncommunicable diseases and health systems rated 51 statements derived from the preliminary Integrated Iranian Climate-Sensitive Diabetes Management Model (ICDMM), mapped onto six domains aligned with WHO health system b

Predicting water quality and water treatment operations under future climate scenarios using machine learning models.

Climate change is altering the water quality through changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, and weather events. Predicting future water quality becomes crucial as the impacts of climate change intensify, altering surface water quality and subsequent treatment operations. This study developed predictive models that were trained on climate parameters to predict inflow water quality and treatment plant operations using Multivariate Linear Regression, XGBoost, and Nonlinear Autoregressive with Exogenous Inputs (NARX). The NARX model consistently demonstrated superior performance across most wa

Improved prediction by enteric methane emission models in ruminant production systems by integrating climate classification.

Several mathematical models predict enteric methane (CH4) production (g/d) from ruminants. These models were developed from data originated from different regions and production systems and are not always applicable elsewhere. This study evaluated the performance of selected existing models for predicting enteric CH4 emissions of ruminants raised in diverse production systems in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. Climate was classified using the Köppen climate classification, while diets were classified by composition, such as high- or low-NDF, ether extract (EE), starch content and NDF dig

Climate Change and Risk Projection: Dynamic Spatial Models of Tsetse and African Trypanosomiasis in Kenya.

African trypanosomiasis, otherwise known as sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in animals, is a parasitic protist passed cyclically by the tsetse fly. Despite more than a century of control and eradication efforts, the fly remains widely distributed across Africa and coextensive with other prevalent diseases. Control and planning are hampered by spatially and temporally variant vector distributions, ecologically irrelevant boundaries, and neglect. Tsetse are particularly well suited to move into previously disease-free areas under climate change scenarios, placing unprepared populations at

A climate-informed dengue transmission model with Bayesian decision support.

BACKGROUND: It is crucial to model the spread of dengue under different weather conditions so that we can understand how it changes with the seasons and plan targeted actions. Conventional deterministic models frequently overlook the time-varying impact of environmental factors, hence constraining their forecast accuracy and policy significance. METHODS: This research formulates a non-autonomous, climate-sensitive SEIR-SI dengue model with crucial parameters like transmission rate, vector mortality, and recruitment are articulated as explicit functions of temperature, humidity, and precipitat

A global mathematical model of climatic suitability for Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Climatic conditions are a key determinant of malaria transmission intensity, through their impacts on both the parasite and its mosquito vectors. Mathematical models relating climatic conditions to malaria transmission can be used to develop spatial maps of climatic suitability for malaria. These maps underpin efforts to quantify the distribution and burden of malaria in humans, enabling improved monitoring and control. Previous work has developed mathematical models and global maps for the suitability of temperature for malaria transmission. In this paper, existing temperature-based models ar

Modeling valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) incidence on the basis of climate conditions.

Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) is a disease endemic to arid regions within the Western Hemisphere, and is caused by a soil-dwelling fungus, Coccidioides immitis. Incidence data for Pima County, reported to the Arizona Department of Health Services as new cases of valley fever, were used to conduct exploratory analyses and develop monthly multivariate models of relationships between valley fever incidence and climate conditions and variability in Pima County, Arizona, USA. Bivariate and compositing analyses conducted during the exploratory portion of the study revealed that antecedent temper

Environmental sub models for a macroeconomic model: agricultural contribution to climate change and acidification in Denmark.

Integrated modelling of the interaction between environmental pressure and economic development is a useful tool to evaluate environmental consequences of policy initiatives. However, the usefulness of such models is often restricted by the fact that these models only include a limited set of environmental impacts, which are often energy-related emissions. In order to evaluate the development in the overall environmental pressure correctly, these model systems must be extended. In this article an integrated macroeconomic model system of the Danish economy with environmental modules of energy r

Evaluation of a Novel Climate-Driven SIR Model for Cholera Prediction.

The causative agent of cholera, Vibrio cholerae, is a bacterium native to the aquatic environment and commensal to zooplankton, namely copepods. V. cholerae thrives in warm, moderately saline water and its incidence is strongly influenced by environmental factors, which have proven critical for predictive awareness of cholera by identifying outbreak locations and timing. Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) models provide useful information for understanding transmission dynamics and epidemic curves of disease outbreaks. Previous such models lacked predictive ability due to limited data in reg

Modelling climate change impacts on the spatial distribution of anthrax in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: In Zimbabwe, anthrax is endemic with outbreaks being reported almost annually in livestock, wildlife, and humans over the past 40 years. Accurate modelling of its spatial distribution is key in formulating effective control strategies. In this study, an Ensemble Species Distribution Model was used to model the current and future distribution of anthrax occurrence in Zimbabwe. METHODS: Bioclimatic variables derived from the Beijing Climate Centre Climate System Model were used to model the disease. Collinearity testing was conducted on the 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation to

Developing a dengue prediction model based on climate in Tawau, Malaysia.

Dengue is fast becoming the most urgent health issue in Malaysia, recording close to a 10-fold increase in cases over the last decade. With much uncertainty hovering over the recently introduced tetravalent vaccine and no effective antiviral drugs, vector control remains the most important strategy in combating dengue. This study analyses the relationship between weather predictors including its lagged terms, and dengue incidence in the District of Tawau over a period of 12 years, from 2006 to 2017. A forecasting model purposed to predict future outbreaks in Tawau was then developed using this

Theoretical Assessment of the Impact of Climatic Factors in a Vibrio Cholerae Model.

A mathematical model for Vibrio Cholerae (V. Cholerae) in a closed environment is considered, with the aim of investigating the impact of climatic factors which exerts a direct influence on the bacterial metabolism and on the bacterial reservoir capacity. We first propose a V. Cholerae mathematical model in a closed environment. A sensitivity analysis using the eFast method was performed to show the most important parameters of the model. After, we extend this V. cholerae model by taking account climatic factors that influence the bacterial reservoir capacity. We present the theoretical analys

Modeling the impact of climate change on the dynamics of Rift Valley Fever.

A deterministic SEIR model of rift valley fever (RVF) with climate change parameters was considered to compute the basic reproduction number ℛ 0 and investigate the impact of temperature and precipitation on ℛ 0. To study the effect of model parameters to ℛ 0, sensitivity and elasticity analysis of ℛ 0 were performed. When temperature and precipitation effects are not considered, ℛ 0 is more sensitive to the expected number of infected Aedes spp. due to one infected livestock and more elastic to the expected number of infected livestock due to one infected Aedes spp. When climatic data are use

The use of ZIP and CART to model cryptosporidiosis in relation to climatic variables.

This research assesses the potential impact of weekly weather variability on the incidence of cryptosporidiosis disease using time series zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) and classification and regression tree (CART) models. Data on weather variables, notified cryptosporidiosis cases and population size in Brisbane were supplied by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland Department of Health, and Australian Bureau of Statistics, respectively. Both time series ZIP and CART models show a clear association between weather variables (maximum temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and wind sp
