Clerkship faculty perspectives on basic science integration during clinical training: implications for fourth-year physiology elective development.

The shortened preclerkship phase in integrated medical curricula has raised concerns about whether medical students retain and apply foundational basic science knowledge during clerkship. Yet few studies incorporate perspectives of clerkship faculty, who directly observe students' mechanistic reasoning and are well positioned to inform curricular interventions for vertical integration. This mixed-method study addresses that gap by conducting a clerkship faculty-centered needs assessment evaluating basic science integration, students' preparedness, and priorities for physiology-focused elective

Implementation of multisource feedback for competency assessment in medical students during clinical clerkship: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical clerkship is a critical transitional phase in which medical students develop core competencies through experiential learning. Workplace-based assessment, specifically multisource feedback (MSF), serves as a vital evaluative framework by triangulating perspectives from multiple stakeholders to mitigate bias. Although MSF is extensively validated and used among practising physicians and in postgraduate medical education, its application within undergraduate clinical clerkships remains underexplored. Medical students represent a distinct population with unique developmental

Implementing team-based sequential simulation for medical students in clinical clerkship: preliminary findings and learning efficiency evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Simulation is a key teaching tool for preparing medical students for clinical practice. Combining team-based learning with sequential simulation enhances problem-solving skills. The Clinical Learning through Extended Immersion in Medical Simulation (CLEIMS), a week-long program integrating simulated interprofessional education, has shown promising results at Griffith University. However, its application outside Australia remains largely unexamined. This study herein evaluates the feasibility of a modified 'CLEIMS' (mCLEIMS), condensed into a 2-day course, for second-year clinical c

Sexual History-Taking in a Surgery Clerkship Assessment: A Stubborn Clinical Skills Gap With Reproductive Health Care Implications.

PURPOSE: Patients present with sexual and reproductive health needs in various clinical settings, so knowing when and how to elicit a relevant sexual history is critical in any specialty. This work examined whether reinforcing the surgical relevance of sexual health with an integrated training improved third-year medical students' sexual history-taking. METHOD: Third-year surgery clerkship standardized patient assessments were video coded from a 2021-2022 comparison and 2022-2023 intervention cohort (University of Louisville School of Medicine). The case used for both cohorts involved a 38-ye

Virtual Reality in Surgical Training: A Comprehensive Study on Educational Efficacy, Memory Enhancement, and Mental State for Clinical Clerkship Students.

Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly used in surgical education. This study examines the impact of VR-integrated training on learning, memory, and psychological responses. A prototype VR system with immersive OR views was tested on 67 clinical clerkship students. OR experiences followed the simulation. Thirty-two questionnaires covered surgical procedures and systems. Mood and personality were assessed using POMS-2, focusing on Total Mood Disturbance (TMD), fatigue-inertia (FI), vigor-activity (VA), and friendliness (F). VR modestly increased interest in surgery (~3.4/5) but training confidenc

Broadening the clinical spectrum for medical students towards primary care: a pre-post analysis of the effect of the implementation of a longitudinal clerkship in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to a broad spectrum of patient cases is a mainstay of undergraduate medical education. This study aimed to assess how many primary care-specific clinical pictures final-year medical students in traditional block rotations had encountered, and how this changed after a curricular change that included the implementation of a four-year longitudinal clerkship in primary care. METHODS: Final-year students before, and after, implementation of the clerkship were asked which of the clinical pictures most relevant to primary care they had seen. We compared the overall proportions o

The mediating role of psychological flexibility in the association of autistic-like traits with burnout and depression in medical students during clinical clerkships in Japan: a university-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout and depression among medical students is linked to serious problems that require appropriate solutions. Subthreshold autism traits or autistic-like traits (ALTs) may be possible factors associated with burnout and depression. The effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for burnout and depression has been widely reported. The treatment aims to improve psychological flexibility, a concept indicating engagement in personal value-based behaviors without avoiding uncomfortable private experiences. This study examined whether ALTs were associated with burnout or

Does Delaying the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 to After Clerkships Affect Student Performance on Clerkship Subject Examinations?

Phenomenon: Schools are considering the optimal timing of Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Two primary reasons for moving Step 1 after the core clerkships are to promote deeper, more integrated basic science learning in clinical contexts and to better prepare students for the increasingly clinical focus of Step 1. Positioning Step 1 after the core clerkships leverages a major national assessment to drive learning, encouraging students to deepen their basic science knowledge while in the clinical setting. Previous studies demonstrated small increases in Step 1
