A PCR was developed and applied for the detection of Clostridium botulinum type C in 18 avian and environmental samples collected during an outbreak of avian botulism, and the results were compared with those obtained by conventional methodologies based on the mouse bioassay. PCR and mouse bioassay results compared well (100%) after the enrichment of samples, but PCR results directly indicated the presence of this microorganism in six samples, while only one of these contained the type C botulinal neurotoxin before enrichment. The PCR assay was sensitive (limit of detection between 15 and 15 x

Mouse-lethal toxin identified as that of Clostridium botulinum type C by antitoxin neutralization was present in cultures of 38.0% of 326 soil samples collected from 28 wetlands in Saskatchewan. There was no difference in prevalence of toxicity between samples collected in spring and summer, and no relationship was evident between the occurrence of toxicity and water salinity, marsh type or water depth. There was a strong association between the prior occurrence of avian botulism in a marsh and the presence of toxin in cultures from soil; 59.2% of soil samples from marshes with a known history

The resistance of cattle with varying serum-antitoxin titres was determined by per os challenge. The results proved that a solid immunity can be produced against C. botulinum toxins C1 and D. The immune response of cattle to various quantities of C. botulinum C1 and D toxoids, aluminium-phosphate-adsorbed and in water-in-oil emulsion was investigated. The response to antigen in water-in-oil emulsion was far superior to the other when they were used for primary and secondary stimuli. When cattle had been given a solid basic immunity with 2 injections of antigen in water-in-oil emulsion, essenti

In two of 14 tests in which adult mice were dosed per os, whole broth culture of Clostridium botulinum type C was more lethal than culture sterilised by membrane filtration. The results indicated that occasionally--though not usually--significant bacterial multiplication and toxigenesis occurred in the gut.

Feeding experiments with Clostridium botulinum toxin type Cβ were carried out using 11 goats. The toxin, which originated partly from the liver of a cat carcass and partly from broth inoculated with Cl. botulinum type Cβ isolated from the cat liver, was given to the goats through a rubber stomach-tube. Symptoms of botulism usually occurred on the second or third day after the challenge. Death was caused by doses of toxin as small as 0.5 MMLD (minimum mouse lethal dose) per g body weight of goat, and 1 MMLD per g was considered to be lethal for goats when they are fed hay and concentrated fodde

Toxigenic Clostridium botulinum spores are widely distributed in wetland environments and are frequently recovered from healthy wild birds, where ingestion of toxic maggots from carcasses is considered a major initiating factor for botulism outbreaks. Toxic carcasses can perpetuate an existing outbreak also in poultry, but their importance as an initiating factor for poultry botulism is less clear. Although toxigenic C. botulinum can be recovered from healthy broilers during outbreaks, there are almost no data on the prevalence in healthy broiler flocks (and, by extension, carcasses) and their

In the present study the efficacy Botulism vaccine (formalinised aluminum hydroxide gel adsorbed toxoid of Clostridium botulinum types C and D) was evaluated in four Danish dairy cows under field conditions. Other four dairy herds were unvaccinated. Blood serum of all animals was analyzed for specific C. botulinum types A, B, C, D and E antibodies using a developed ELISA. Feces of all animals were analyzed for botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) and C. botulinum spores. C. botulinum types C and D antibodies were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in vaccinated animals. Vaccination with botulism vacc

The prevalence of Clostridium botulinum type C (% of positive sediment samples) was determined in 10 marshes at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR), located in the Central Valley of California (USA), where avian botulism epizootics occur regularly. Fifty-two percent of 2,200 sediment samples collected over an 18-mo period contained C. botulinum type C (both neurotoxic and aneurotoxic) which was present throughout the year in all 10 marshes. The prevalence of C. botulinum type C was similar in marshes with either high or low botulism losses in the previous 5 yr. Marshes with avian botuli

In guinea pigs, the type C and/or type D antitoxin responses to a single dose of a bivalent or monovalent Cl. botulinum vaccine increase markedly between the fourth and ninth week after injection and still increase markedly by the ninth week. For type C, a similar pattern has been found in cattle. Antigens of types C and D mutually interfere with the antitoxin responses in guinea pigs. Graded doses of vaccine arouse graded antitoxin responses in guinea pigs. Stability trials of vaccines have emphasized the unsatisfactory nature of an absolute-response type of assay, rather than revealing any l

An outbreak of botulism occurred over a two-month period beginning July 20, 2016. In all, 697 wild birds were found paralyzed or dead at the Namdong reservoir and 11 Gong-gu. Using a mouse bioassay, type C botulinum toxin was identified in the bird serum, liquid cultures of soil samples, and maggot extracts. To minimize further infection of wild birds, we opened the floodgates of the Namdong reservoir adjacent to the Yellow Sea; this decreased the water temperature and the nutrient load such as nitrogen and phosphorus. The outbreak stopped shortly after taking these actions. It is not known if

Animal botulism is mainly associated with Clostridium botulinum group III-producing neurotoxin types C, C/D, D, and D/C. In this report, we present the draft genome sequences of the first five strains of Clostridium botulinum type D/C isolated in Brazil and used for vaccination purposes.

This study reports a botulism outbreak on a pig farm. Clostridium botulinum type C was detected using PCR. The gene encoding the toxin corresponds to a novel type C neurotoxin recently described in a human botulism outbreak, raising the question of its prevalence in pigs and the related risks to humans.

This case report describes a recent botulism outbreak in commercial laying hens with a history of increased mortality and flaccid paralysis. Routine diagnostic gross examination and microscopy from seven hens were inconclusive, but botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) in peripheral blood was neutralized with both type C and type D antitoxins in the mouse bioassay. During a farm visit, 10 additional hens from a 34-wk-old flock on the farm were selected for clinical examination and further sampling. Nine hens were observed in sternal recumbency, with flaccid paralysis of the neck, drooping wings and tail

Four horses from the same farm developed clinical signs of botulism during the winter months; three of these horses died. One horse survived an initial attack and recovered over a three-week period, but died during a second attack. The horse that survived took six weeks to recover. Clinical and postmortem examination ruled out other causes of disease. Confirmation of the diagnosis was made by isolation of Clostridium botulinum type C toxin from the dirt in the bottom of an oak feedtrough used by all horses, and from the colonic contents of one of the horses that died. To our knowledge, this is

Clostridium botulinum type C progenitor toxin with a molecular weight of 500 k daltons (C1 L toxin), purified from the bacterial cells, bound at pH 2 to the cell-wall peptidoglycan derived from certain strains. The carbohydrate moiety of the peptidoglycan contained arabinose and galactose at a certain ratio, both of which may directly be associated with the binding. The binding, being dependent on the quality and quantity of the sugars, enhanced the oral toxicity of the toxin to the chicken as well as the mouse.
