BACKGROUND: The Clostridium species is a gram positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped microbe that is known to produce many toxins. Most infections by the Clostridium species involve C. botulinum, C. difficile, and C. perfringens. We reviewed 402 hospital admissions of patients with acute leukemia to define the frequency and characteristics of anaerobic bacteremia in this patient population. This study analyzed antimicrobial resistance in 119 Clostridium species isolates collected at a Costa Rican trauma hospital (2018-2022). Isolates were identified using MALDI-TOF, and antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed by E-test. C. perfringens, C. tertium, and Paeniclostridium sordellii were most prevalent species. The incidence of anaerobic bloodstream infections (BSI) in patients who underwent bone marrow transplantation (BMT) recently increased at our institution. A retrospective case-control study of patients undergoing BMT from January 1995 through December 1998 was performed to determine the microbiological characteristics, epidemiology, and outcome of anaerobic BSI and to identify independent risk factors for infection.
